Chapter 15: Chapter 15 Interview
When Suxin arrived at Haidong Securities Company, it was already 9:15 am, and the crowd in the lobby took her by surprise.
"So many people? Are they all here for the interview?" Seeing the crowd, Suxin felt a bit nervous and hurriedly squeezed through to the reception desk to register.
After signing her name, Suxin received a number plate.
"Number 164?" Observing the number on the plate, Suxin was taken aback, "So many people, they can't all be competing for the same position, can they?"
"Miss, I'm number 164, are there 164 people competing with me for the position of assistant to the director?" Suxin couldn't help but ask.
"Not 164, but 250," the receptionist answered smoothly without expression, apparently having answered this question many times already.
"250?" Suxin's heart skipped a beat, that many?
The wait was agonizing. Watching groups of people around her, some still reviewing their notes, others making anxious phone calls, Suxin realized just how many people were out of work. However, Suxin was confident about one thing, she definitely wasn't the least qualified among them.
She straightened her back and walked into the first interview room.
The interview process was in two phases. The first round was a preliminary screening where 20 candidates would be selected from the 250 interviewees to proceed to the second round, which consisted of one-on-one questioning.
Luckily, two of the topics in the first round were ones Suxin had prepared for, and after her meticulous integration, the answers could be considered perfect. Although she hadn't prepared for the other two questions, the confidence established by the earlier answers allowed her to respond smoothly.
Two hours later, the shortlist for the second interview was posted. Seeing the distinctly written name "Cheng Suxin", she felt a surge of excitement. Out of 250, only 20 were chosen, how could one not be thrilled?
"Only a divine eye can hire me! This is truly 'wisdom recognizes talent!'" Thinking of Chen Ziqian's ill-fated words from that morning, Suxin proudly retorted.
The second interview was scheduled to start at 2:30 pm. Knowing that the final decision rested in the hands of the director, Suxin decided to grab something to eat at the nearby KFC before reviewing the topics more thoroughly.
No sooner had she ordered her meal at KFC, Suxin received a call from Bai Xiaoyan.
"Susu, tonight at 8 o'clock, Jazz Island Coffee."
"Another arranged date?" Just hearing the words "Jazz Island Coffee" made Suxin's skin crawl.
"Trust me, Susu, this time he's really a catch. I've seen him before, he's a colleague of Old Xu, just transferred here, a master's graduate."
"Really a catch?" Suxin had her serious doubts.
"Really, I swear to you!"
"Alright then, we'll talk tonight. I'm busy now and don't have time; I'll call you when I'm done."
As 2:30 pm finally approached, the crowds from the morning had dispersed, leaving only 20 people waiting in the conference room, looking rather sparse.
Watching others go in for their interview and then gradually come out to be directed to another waiting room for the results, Suxin was calm. She felt she was in great form that day and confident she would be accepted.
"Number 164, Cheng Suxin!"
Finally, it was her turn. Suxin stood up composedly, adjusted her clothes, and then headed to the examination room.
Seven examiners were seated at a long table, and Suxin took her place confidently as a candidate.
"I've looked at Miss Cheng's information. Did you graduate from T University?" asked a middle-aged man seated at the center.
"Yes, I graduated from T University with a degree in finance," Suxin replied with a calm, composed smile.
"Hmm, not bad, that's a prestigious school." The chief examiner nodded and then calmly asked, "Miss Cheng, given that you have five years of experience in financial management at an import-export company, could you discuss how you would effectively integrate your educational background and work experience with the position of director's assistant to perform optimally and efficiently in this role?"
Suxin thought for a few seconds before speaking, "Before applying for this position, I familiarized myself with the situation at Haidong Securities Company and the duties associated with the director's assistant role. I am confident that my own capabilities are entirely up to the task. I have faith in my professional knowledge, and throughout my four years at university, I served as the class's public relations officer, undertaking a lot of promotional work, such as..., and as for interpersonal relations, I consider myself quite adept,... these are all successful cases I've been involved in, and I'm convinced that with..."
Detailing point by point, Suxin grew more engaged as she spoke, her arguments clear and convincing, earning frequent nods from the examiners in front.
"Alright, that will do, you may go now. The results will be announced shortly," said the chief examiner, then picked up a pen to record some scores on a paper.
"Hold on, I have one more question." Just as Suxin was about to stand up, this remark made her take her seat again.
However, the voice sounded all too familiar. Raising her head and looking forward, she was struck by lightning on a clear day as she recognized the face before her.
Xu Yunhui! It was Xu Yunhui!
"Director Xu, do you have an additional question you wish to ask?" asked the chief examiner with a smile.
Director Xu? Was Xu Yunhui the director? Her prospective superior for the position she was applying for?
Was this what they called a small world, running into an adversary on a narrow road?
"Miss Cheng, your answers to the previous questions were perfect, showing you put a lot of effort into understanding the assistant role," Xu Yunhui's smile was as perfect as it was professional, "I noticed in your CV that you previously worked in financial management at an import-export company, is that correct?"
Suxin nodded, then watched Xu Yunhui's bright red lips moving before her.
"I'm curious, in those five years, what specific financial tasks were you responsible for?"
Suxin was stunned for a moment, recognizing from Xu Yunhui's calm composure that her background had likely been thoroughly researched.
Xu Yunhui's smile was almost blinding, causing Suxin a slight embarrassment. But it lasted only for a few seconds, after which Suxin looked up at the examiners seated before her.
"Yes, over these five years, I was just an average finance clerk at an import-export company, doing the most ordinary of tasks and not involved in any major financial planning. But it's precisely because I was an ordinary clerk, dealing with the most complex matters, that I came to understand many aspects of financial work. While I was not directly involved in major plans, I did assist with some of the foundational work. I believe that with my diligence and effort, as long as there is an opportunity, I can surely perform well and am indeed capable of handling the director's assistant position!"
Suxin's words were firm and unwavering. After responding, she glanced at Xu Yunhui, then stood up, bowed slightly to the examiners, and left the examination room.
