Chapter 99: 99: Battle Begins
"So you're with the Revolutionary Army? Then those blind fools from earlier—you sent them?"
Haruki didn't answer their question. Instead, he shot back with one of his own, fixing his gaze on the man who had spoken.
"We only leaked your location to them."
The man responded casually.
Not long ago, Najenda had informed the Revolutionary Army headquarters that Haruki possessed a Teigu capable of reviving the dead. She also emphasized that he wielded devastating large-scale attack techniques and held overwhelming power.
The news caused an uproar among the Revolutionary Army's upper ranks. After all, who isn't afraid of death—especially those long entrenched in power? Their righteous façades crumbled instantly. The moment they received the report, they dispatched their only two offensive-type Teigu users to the Imperial Capital, commanding Night Raid to cooperate at all costs and bring the Teigu back to headquarters.
Because Haruki and his group weren't far from the capital, they couldn't send many people. So instead, they decided to manipulate local bandits into testing him. That way, they could both observe his combat style and try to wear him down.
But things didn't go as planned. To their astonishment, Haruki didn't even move. The girls at his side wiped out the entire bandit horde in mere seconds.
Realizing their plan had failed, the two from headquarters acted quickly, striking right as Haruki's group wrapped up their battle. One of them, clearly a power-type Teigu user, hurled a massive boulder from a distance—leading to the scene just moments ago.
Yet again, Haruki defied expectations. They'd thought he might dodge it, but instead, he obliterated the rock. And from the destruction around them, it was clear the intel claiming Haruki's Teigu was limited to wide-range attacks was wildly inaccurate.
They had believed a Teigu capable of resurrection and powerful area attacks was already terrifying. What they hadn't expected was that his direct combat power was just as overwhelming.
Even so, seeing the boulder shatter effortlessly, the Revolutionary Army operatives had no time to rethink. They rushed toward Haruki with Night Raid in tow. Their orders were clear: bring the Teigu back, no matter what. And chances to catch Haruki outside the capital were rare.
"Why should I give you my Teigu?"
Haruki spoke calmly, his tone sharp, eyes briefly drifting toward Akame, who stood silently behind the two strangers.
Noticing his glance, Akame quickly looked away, uncertain and conflicted.
"If we obtain this Teigu, we could save more of the brave souls who've died for the revolution. It would help our cause move forward more smoothly," the man argued.
"Spare me the noble excuse," Haruki replied with clear disdain. "Let's be honest—your so-called leaders are just terrified of dying. And you dare call yourselves righteous? From what I've seen today, you're no different from those bandits earlier. If anything, they were more honest. You hide your greed behind the mask of justice—pathetic. A bandit pretending to be a saint... isn't that the biggest joke of all?"
The man's face darkened.
"Hmph. Say whatever you want. But if you don't hand over that Teigu today, don't blame us for being ruthless. With so many delicate little girls around you... let's see how many survive."
The threat was clear.
Hearing this, even the Night Raid members behind them frowned. They too felt that the behavior of these so-called superiors clashed with the ideals the Revolutionary Army claimed to uphold. Still, they tried to convince themselves—maybe this was just a few bad apples. Surely the organization as a whole was still righteous.
But no one noticed the shift in Akame. At those words, her head, which had remained bowed in silence, suddenly lifted. Her eyes burned with quiet resolve.
"Oh? So you're that confident? You think I'm cornered? This world is ruled by the strong. All your talk is useless—just get on with it already. And one more thing... my women aren't helpless dolls. If you try to use them against me, that'll be the last mistake you ever make."
Haruki's voice was cold, his warning clear.
"Hmph. Enough talk. Attack!"
Seeing Haruki had no intention of handing over the Teigu, the man barked the order. His companion and the Night Raid members moved to strike.
As the two Revolutionary Army members charged forward, Haruki didn't move. Instead, Gin and Cornelia stepped out from his side to meet them head-on. The earlier threats had stoked a fire in them both. Under their lead, the four combatants soon distanced themselves from the rest of the group.
The Night Raid members were just about to move in to assist—
"Hey, what are you staring at? Your opponents are right here!"
Kurome's voice cut through the air, colder than ever. She didn't even spare Akame a glance.
