Chapter 181: Malcolm's plan
Alex arrived home with his family, and Alicia some time later. It was early in the evening, and there was still a lot of time before dinner time, so Zoran left to go check on the trading licence at the Union building. He would also stop by his new shop before returning home.
Alex left the girls and his mother and went to his room. Reaching his room, he looked at the purple envelope in his hand; it was the recommendation letter that Julius had given him outside the stadium.
This showed that he had potential and was more or less already a student of the Brandvel Magic University.
Of course, he would still need to participate in the university's acceptance test to prove the scouting skills of the instructor who recommended him.
But with the recommendation letter, he won't need to pay any fee that others who had come on their own had to pay, this included clearance fee, admission fee, boarding fees, and any other fee that didn't relate to learning.
It was literally lifting a huge financial pressure off the shoulders of his parents; not that they would need to pay anything but you get the point.
Alex flipped the envelope in his hand and took a good look at it. He was told that all he needed to do when he reached the university next year was to present the letter to the person in charge of admission, and he would be registered instantly for the test.
With this, he would be able to enter the strongest best magic university in the country and see Ellie…ahem, sorry…and learn more about magic and this world!
Alex kept the letter in his space pocket before changing out of his uniform and into a more casual outfit. He planned to go to the Union building later, but first, he had to check something up.
Alex took out his phone and immediately looked up information about the killer's sanctuary barrier. He found a few articles about it and began to read.
By the time he was done, Alex was impressed; the killer's sanctuary barrier was nice stuff, and he should get some for his family.
But apparently, he had learned that getting one was difficult because people would always rush them whenever one appeared and it was rarely in stock.
"I'll ask Clint and William when I see them later," Alex mumbled to himself before closing the tabs on his phone.
Meanwhile, in a room of a mansion located in a different part of Balon City.
Crash!
Malcolm tightened his grip around the armrest of the chair he was sitting on, shattering it into countless splinters that flew across the room, a cold expression on his face as his eyes stared at the figure who was kneeling in front of him with a sharp glare.
The person who was kneeling in front of Malcolm was none other than Laura who had fought Alex earlier today and had lost. Her head hung low as she didn't dare to look at her father's face.
The room was heavy with thick silence as no one said a word, Malcolm just kept glaring at his daughter for a while before suddenly standing up.
"I gave you a chance to redeem this family's name after a weak trash beat you in public, even going as far as changing you to a different academy.
Did you know how embarrassing it was when other family heads brought up the topic whenever we had an argument? My talented daughter, unable to defeat an Adept rank mage despite all of the resources I spent on her.
But that wasn't enough, you just had to lose again and even worse this time. With a grade two barrier, you lost to an Adept mage." Malcolm's voice was icy and flowing with suppressed anger.
"I-i'm sorry, father," Laura said in a whispering voice.
"Silence!" Malcolm snapped, he suddenly moved and appeared beside Laura the next moment with one of his hands raised in the air.
Slap!
The back of his palm landed roughly on the side of Laura's face, and tossing her body across the room, she crashed into a nearby chair, and it instantly crumbled.
Laura didn't dare make a sound after she was sent flying with a slap, she quickly got up and resumed kneeling in her father's direction.
Malcolm took some deep breaths while still staring at Laura.
"Now, the reputation of the Malcolm family has been completely ruined. Those useless explorers who begged for you to join their group will now dare to speak rudely in front of me, just how did I have a useless daughter like you?" Malcolm spat with a deep tone.
Laura's body shuddered, but she didn't dare raise her head or speak. Silent tears dripped down her face as her hatred for Alex slowly increased, even though he wasn't here.
He was the cause of everything, he was the reason why her father was angry at her. If only he had just kept being trash and didn't change all of a sudden!
"Fine then, I'll take care of this myself! That kid is called Alex, right? Looks like the people from the Brandvel Magic University have taken an interest in him, let's see what I have to do about that.
In the meantime, you're to stay in the cold mana room for ten hours every day; reflect on how useless you are for the rest of the month, tks!" Malcolm snorted before walking out of the room.
After he left, Laura didn't stand up immediately. She kept kneeling down but her expression showed one of fear.
The cold mana room! It was a punishment room in their mansion where the mana was heavy and chilling due to a special formation that her father had placed in the room.
This will make the mana drive into your body even if you resisted, and carry along it a powerful chill that was able to freeze your soul sea and make the mana in your body feel like frost flakes, causing extreme pain!
She didn't want to spend even a minute there.
A while after Malcolm left, a young girl who looked like a younger version of Laura walked into the room. She was Laura's younger sister and Emily's classmate.
"Sister, are you okay?" She asked in a worried tone as she approached Laura. Her eyes landed on the ruined chair beside Laura and a look of shock and anger appeared on her face.
"Sister, what did father do to you?"
Laura finally lifted her head to look at her sister, she forced a small smile on her lips and said that she was all right.
Laura's junior sister fell silent. Apparently, she was behind the door the entire time and had heard everything that had happened in the room; her hate for Alex was sky high as well.
Meanwhile, Alex left for the Union building after spending some time at home.
He reached a quiet area before taking out his robe and mask.
Reaching the Union building, Alex went straight to look for William and Clint to ask about Ellie.
They told him that she had woken up already and even went to watch the tournament. Alex knew this but didn't say anything.
William contacted Julius that Mr Chen had appeared, and it took less than two minutes for Julius and his group to arrive at the Union building.
"Thank you, Senior, for saving me." Ellie bowed and said to Alex, her tone was very respectful and her voice charming.
Alex was very pleased with her attitude, she sounded like a gentle wife.
