Chapter 178: Killer's sanctuary barrier
It was already past one in the afternoon when the sixth match for the day ended and it was finally Alex's turn to come to the arena.
As the referee announced the end of the sixth match and the name of the academy that had won was projected in the air, Alex had already started to make his way down to the arena.
His fellow students wished him luck and encouraged him to do his best but Alex didn't reply and just kept walking with his hands in his pockets.
"A cold chap, but his attitude is understandable." The old man who was the Dean of the Dragonic Magic Academy said with a chuckle.
"I'm sorry we neglected him, we didn't think he would change after four years." The vice Dean whispered softly from the side, a look of guilt in her eyes as she looked at Alex's back.
The Dean didn't say anything and just kept staring at Alex as he went to the arena.
By the time he got down, the students who fought the previous fight had already left and the names of their academies were currently projected in the air.
(Dragonic Magic Academy Vs Blue Void Magic Academy!)
Alex proceeded to enter the arena, and Laura also appeared on the other side of the arena, and the barrier was put back on. Cheers could be heard from all sides of the stadium, Alex could filter the voices of his sister and those of the members of his hunter group through the noise.
However, he didn't look towards them as his eyes were focused on the face of the pretty girl in front of him who had the same hair colour as him.
His gaze seemingly said, "We finally meet."
A look of hatred flashed across Laura's eyes when she saw how calm Alex was, just the sight of him infuriated her so much for some reason and she felt like launching hundreds of fireballs at his face right now.
In the sitting area, Alicia carefully watched Alex and his opponent in the arena; he was the reason she had come today. Instead of insisting on staying back home, she wanted to see how this demon was going to bully his fellow humans.
At the top of the spectators stand where the top members of the Union branch and other important people were watching from, Ellie could be spotted sitting with Julius and the two young people who were always with him.
"I still haven't seen him, didn't he come to watch the tournament?" Ellie asked. She had been informed about Mr Chen after she woke up and wanted to meet him again so she could thank him for saving her.
Thanks to Julius, she knew a bit about Mr Chen. One important thing was that he was a powerful expert and no one knew his exact rank! Ellie had figured this out as well considering how Mr Chen had saved her from a group of evil mages.
Another important thing that she learned from Julius was that Mr Chen shouldn't be messed with.
He has an odd habit of holding grudges and would always get back at those who offended him, even if it was the slightest offence; Julius had said it from experience.
But after learning that Mr Chen said that he would check up on her, Ellie had expected to see him after she woke up or during the tournament. But surprisingly, she hadn't seen him even after so long; she had spent most of her time here looking out for anyone with red hair or a mask but the only ones she had seen were too weak to be Mr Chen.
"It's no use, Mr Chen doesn't come to watch the tournament. He must be busy with other things, he said he would come so don't worry yourself and wait." Julius stated.
Ellie decided to drop the topic and focus on the match for the time being.
In the arena.
"Begin!" One of the referees shouted.
Immediately, Laura waved her left hand and the ring on one of her fingers released a strong light before something flew out of it.
The thing that came out of the ring exploded into sparkles of light that swirled around Laura like schools of fish.
'Hmm, a magic item?'
Alex was puzzled, he didn't make a move and watched.
The entire stadium was silent as everyone watched what the item around Laura was. Some of the audience didn't know how to feel that a Core mage such as herself was the first to bring out a magic item despite her opponent being an Adept rank mage.
While others felt that it wasn't a bad move considering the element of the Adept mage, he had defeated other Core rank mages after all so it was fine to get cautious against something difficult to counter.
A few seconds later, the sparkles around Laura had taken from. A transparent golden barrier had surrounded Laura completely; it was as if she were inside a near-invisible golden egg; she was protected from all sides!
'Huh? What sort of magic item is this?' Alex thought to himself as he looked at the golden barrier around Laura.
On the other hand, those who recognised the magic item after it took form gasped, they included the Dean of Alex's academy, Julius, Ellie, William, and a few other representatives from other magic academies.
The barrier around Laura was called a killer's sanctuary!
It was a magic item that was rare to get because everyone wanted it, no matter what grade it was, people would always do everything in their power to get it!
Why? This was because the killer's sanctuary allowed the owner to attack from inside the barrier, but couldn't be attacked from outside!
It was like facing a hacker in a video game who could attack you from behind obstacles, leaving you helpless and horrified.
And judging from the shade of the barrier's colour, this one was a grade 2 killer's sanctuary which meant that it could take the attack of Expert rank mages without cracking!
Using such a magic item against an Adept mage, Laura wasn't really planning on giving her opponent any chance.
A helpless smile formed on the face of the Dean of Dragonic Magic Academy when he saw the barrier.
"Looks like that kid holds a grudge against Alex, is that the student who left the academy?" he asked and the vice Dean nodded with a solemn expression.
In that arena, while others were worrying for him, Alex stared at the near-invisible barrier around Laura with a blank look on his face.
He knew nothing about the barrier and didn't know how sturdy it was, but none of that really mattered to him, right?
After activating her killer's sanctuary barrier, Laura gazed at Alex with a sharp gaze as if saying.
'Even though I'm stronger than you, I'm not going to go easy on you!'
Without saying anything else, she summoned her stars and proceeded to cast an Adept spell.
The red stars formed a star pattern quickly and a fireball came flying out upon Laura's command.
Swoosh!
The fireball drew a red trail in the air as it shot toward Alex at high speed.
Alex casually moved to the side and easily dodged the fireball before summoning his stars and casting a spell.
His left hand stretched toward Laura as his eye lit up with a silver white light.
"Telekinesis!"
