Ch-40
Robin had made her way to a building on the opposite side of the place where the Straw Hats were currently and was about to use her devil fruit ability to spy on them to get the idea of the people who were supporting Vivi.
“I wonder what this beautiful lady there is doing,” A voice suddenly entered Robin’s ears which took her by surprise as she suddenly distanced herself from the source of the voice and finally observed the said person after securing a good distance from him.
“When did you come behind me?” Robin asked as she was clearly caught unaware and she wasn’t very fond of this feeling.
“I was just gazing at the stars earlier when I saw you, what about you? What brought you here Miss?” Usopp said with a smirk.
Unknowingly Robin could feel a sense of invisible pressure coming from this person as if he could see right through her but she couldn’t point out the reason why she felt that so she tried to probe further, “You don’t look like you’re from this town, who are you?”
“Well, I’m a pirate and we’re just staying here till our log pose sets,” Usopp said.
The moment Robin heard that she understood that he belonged the crew of pirates that are currently helping Vivi and Igaram. This was all the information she could acquire from those wounded Baroque work members and hence wanted to probe further in order to gauge their strength.
“I was wondering just who was it that was capable of dealing with so many of our members, so it was you,” Robin said.
“Technically it was my captain I just gave him some aid,” Usopp explained in order to not give rise to any misunderstandings.
“Interesting, you guys do seem to have some ability, you can call me Miss All Sunday and I’m also a member of Baroque Works,” Robin told Usopp her identity.
“Is that so? Do you also want to fight?” Usopp asked.
“Not really, I just came here today to get to know how things were going on here, though they have taken an unnatural turn but hopefully it might prove to be for the better,” Robin said with a smile of her own.
“Since you have no intention to fight then want to share a drink under this beautiful starry night?” Usopp said as he displayed a bottle of sake to her.
Robin was not expecting such a reply at all and was momentarily stuck for a second there. She tried to remember the last time someone offered her a drink only to realize that there were none. It was her first time being invited by someone for a drink.
Even though it was the first time it didn’t mean that should accept the invitation but Usopp’s gaze which was directed towards the starry sky made her direct her gaze towards them as well and she couldn’t help but feel a melancholic strain in her heart.
This feeling was very similar to those lonely nights when she used to drink alcohol by herself to numb herself whenever the thoughts of her past haunted her.
Therefore, with the intention of wanting to numb herself once again, she agreed to Usopp’s invitation.
Soon the two of them were sitting on the rooftop of the building as they chugged down a shot after clicking their glasses before directing their gaze towards the vast sky.
“It feels that you already knew that I was coming here to spy on you guys,” Robin said strange manner.
“Why would you say so?” Usopp inquired still relishing the rum that entered his throat just now.
“If not, then why would you already have two glasses with you?” Robin rotated the glass she was holding in her hand as he pointed her index finger towards the glass Usopp was holding.
“Would you believe it if I say that the stars told me?” Usopp said with a cheeky smile.
“I’ll believe that for now even though you’re clearly lying tch,” Robin said as she downed another shot and went back to gazing.
“Hehe well it’s all fair since you’re also not very truthful yourself,” Usopp said with a laugh as he followed after Robin and downed another shot.
“You’re quite observant,” Robin said with a smile but she felt cautious in her heart.
“Observant enough to ask a beautiful lady to share a drink with me, Indeed I am,” Usopp brought the tense atmosphere back to its original state inviting a genuine smile from Robin.
All her life she’s only been called and seen as a devil by everyone she’s been acquainted it after that incident so hearing someone compliment her like this, she couldn’t help but feel-good inside.
While Robin was still immersed in that feeling the next sentence from Usopp stung a chord in her injured heart, “It must be tough, living like this right?”
The moment the words were spoken by Usopp, Robin’s whole body involuntarily shook as she turned her gaze straight into Usopp’s eyes with a sense of foreboding.
“What do you mean?” Robin couldn’t help but ask.
“Your eyes, you don’t need to tell someone for them to know about it...you know,” Usopp said as his met gaze with Robin’s.
Hearing his words Robin immediately retracted her gaze as if not wanting him to know more about her. Even though what he said was quite nonsensical the feeling that his all-knowing gaze gave her was that all her secrets were known to this man.
“Look at your reaction, hahaha it’s alright if I was in your place then I would probably be surprised aswell,” Usopp didn’t realize but the alcohol was starting to take a toll on him and was starting to affect his senses.
“Is that so? Why do you think so?” Robin probed seeing the drunk state Usopp was in.
“You think I’ll tell you my secret? I definitely won’t but I can tell you one thing?” Usopp said in a dragging manner indicating just how drunk he was at the moment.
“What thing?” Robin asked as her curiosity was sparked.
Usopp made a cup with his hand and brought it closer to Robin’s ears as he whispered into it, “Things will change for the better soon, you won’t be forever alone…Ro-“ As Usopp was on the verge of completing his sentence he collapsed right on Robin’s lap.
Seeing the snoring Usopp who was resting his head on her lap Robin couldn’t help but feel nostalgic as tears slowly started dripping down her eyes. Usopp’s words clearly reminded her of the words spoken to her by her dear friend Saul during his last moments.
Robin bit her lips to stop herself from bawling like a child as the tears slowly dripped down her cheeks and fell onto Usopp’s face.
It was then that her attention went back to Usopp who was currently lying on her lap. She couldn’t help but grow more and more curious about this man who seems to act like he knows everything about her.
If it was anyone else then she would have directly dealt with them in order to not invite further trouble for herself but she couldn’t help but feel that this man had no ulterior intentions towards her. She looked at the sleeping face of the man for a bit longer before slowly lifting his head up and making it rest on her hat as she stood up.
After taking another glance at Usopp who was sleeping soundly Robin went back towards the direction from where she came from as her figure slowly faded in the darkness.
