Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Do I Need Treatment?
By the time Gavial arrived on the scene with Kal'tsit and Warfarin, who had noticed the commotion, the battle was long over.
It had started abruptly and ended even more abruptly.
What greeted their eyes was Skadi sitting collapsed on the ground, the unconscious Specter, and the only two standing figures: Steven and his adopted daughter, gazing at him with adoration.
"I need you to explain exactly what happened here. Can you do that, Mr. Steve?"
Kal'tsit looked at Steven with curiosity, but just as she was about to question him further, she noticed something off about him. Her pupils slightly contracted.
The room still contained traces of Originium energy radiation, and the aura emanating from Steven was unmistakably one associated with an infected individual.
This mysterious boy who claimed to have a cure for Oripathy—had he misstepped?
Unlike Kal'tsit, who realized this a moment later, Warfarin, being a vampire, noticed it immediately. She approached Steven with a concerned expression and offered a gentle warning.
"I think you need treatment right now. Since it's early-stage infection, it won't have a significant impact on you if controlled promptly."
Warfarin had developed a slight fondness for this young man. After all, it was rare for someone to remain so calm and composed under pressure. Seeing him infected made her feel a twinge of pity.
"Huh? What do you mean? I need treatment?"
Steven had just been about to demand compensation from Kal'tsit when he was bewildered by the expressions on her and Warfarin's faces—like they were looking at a terminal patient.
What was going on? Why did they look as though he was about to die?
Glancing at the status bar in the corner of his vision, Steven finally noticed something unusual. A strange new buff had appeared in his status panel.
[Originium Infection: Initial Stage]
(Originium is beginning to erode your body.)
"Eh?"
It was then Steven recalled that in his showy move to separate the two Abyssal Hunters earlier, he had inadvertently exposed himself to the Originium energy seeping from Specter's wounds.
Apparently, as Warfarin said, the infection was indeed transmissible.
But after identifying the cause of his condition, Steven didn't seem concerned in the slightest. Instead, he smiled at Warfarin, who was genuinely worried about him.
"I thought it was something serious. Turns out it's just this? Don't worry. Eating something will fix it."
While he wasn't yet confident about curing Oripathy in the natives of this world, for himself, the issue was a non-issue.
From his inventory, Steven pulled out another barrel of milk and, like drinking a casual beverage, began slurping it down loudly in front of everyone.
Gavial's nose twitched. That familiar scent—she could confirm it was the exact same liquid as the earlier one Steven referred to as milk.
After downing the barrel and letting out a satisfied burp, Steven stunned the three medical operators present.
The boy who had previously exuded the unmistakable aura of an infected individual now looked completely refreshed, as if nothing had happened. It was as though someone else had been infected in his place.
Could this really happen? Did Oripathy truly have a cure?
Kal'tsit's gaze toward Steven gained a complex layer of emotion. Something she had sought for years was now within reach, yet instead of joy, a feeling of unease lingered.
Warfarin, in contrast, was much more excited. She had joined Rhodes Island precisely to find a cure for Oripathy. Watching Steven demonstrate the removal of infection right before her eyes, how could she not be thrilled?
"How did you do that? What did you drink? Is there more of it?"
Her cold, slender hand gripped Steven's arm as her face filled with anticipation. In her excitement, she even forgot about the two Abyssal Hunters lying on the ground. At this moment, she wished she could dissect Steven on the spot to uncover his secrets.
Kal'tsit also looked at him expectantly, her silent gaze filled with questions.
When Steven had initially claimed he might have a way to cure Oripathy, neither of them had believed him. After all, as Warfarin had pointed out, Steven hadn't even known what Originium was. Anyone would have doubted his claims.
Their agreement to work with him had been born from a refusal to abandon any glimmer of hope.
Now, Steven's actions had dispelled their doubts. Inviting this mysterious young man here had been the wisest decision they had ever made.
"Don't get so worked up. First of all, while I do have more, I need to warn you. That Abyssal Hunter over there went berserk because she drank the same thing. Without my constitution, drinking it casually won't guarantee the same results."
Pouring cold water on the two women's excitement, Steven frowned slightly.
The Originium infection debuff in his status bar had been cleared, confirming his hypothesis. For him, this problem was no more than a matter of drinking milk.
Not only that, after experimenting on himself, he now understood why Specter had gone berserk.
The logic was simple. Originium infection integrates with the body's tissues and cells. The milk's effect was to expel all infected parts. That was why even Steven had felt pain during the process.
According to Kal'tsit, Specter's infection was concentrated around her spinal cord. Drinking so much milk had effectively "extracted" her spine. Of course, that level of pain would drive anyone mad.
Steven doubted anyone else could endure such agony.
"How is this possible?"
Warfarin examined the unconscious Specter in confusion. Her wounds, which had previously been emitting Originium energy, were now sealed, leaving her looking severely weakened.
What shocked Warfarin even more was that Specter's blood Originium-Crystal densities had noticeably decreased.
