Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Hold On, Friend
Seeing her companion in such pain, Skadi's expression instantly turned cold. She couldn't spare time to question Steven about what was in the metal barrel and instead rushed forward to calm the raging girl.
Normally, she would never act like this. Even when trapped in nightmares, she rarely displayed such aggression. The painful tone in her voice was something Skadi had never heard before.
One thing was clear to Skadi at this moment: she needed to calm the girl down. If not, once she unleashed her full strength, the entire Rhodes Island facility might be in jeopardy.
However, like an arrow released from a bowstring, Skadi barely managed to stabilize herself in front of the raging girl before she was knocked back by a tremendous force. Strange wounds appeared on the girl's body, emitting bursts of orange-yellow energy.
Skadi had never seen such a peculiar phenomenon before and was momentarily at a loss as to how to stop her.
On the other hand, Gavial was utterly stunned. She recognized that orange-yellow glow—it was the same as the Originium energy that erupted when Originium-infected individuals passed away.
Wasn't the Originium solution in her spine supposed to be stable? Why had it suddenly erupted?
There was no time to figure out what was going on. Gavial quickly grabbed Steven's arm, intending to lead him to a safer place.
As an infected herself, Gavial wasn't particularly worried about the energy, and Skadi, as an Abyssal Hunter, also had some resistance to it. But the boy standing there? There were no signs of infection on him, so staying here would put him at serious risk.
Yet, as usual, Gavial found she couldn't budge Steven.
He stood there as solid as a rock.
"This place is dangerous! You need to explain what exactly was in that barrel!" Gavial shouted at him. She knew the rampage of Specter was most likely connected to him, but she also understood he might be innocent in all this. After all, who would have expected Specter's first action upon waking to be wolfing down food?
Still, the strange pain from the exposed Originium crystals on her body made her question what exactly was in Steven's barrel.
"It's just a barrel of milk. She helped herself to my stuff without asking. I'm already being lenient by not getting mad, okay?"
Steven remained unwilling to move. His gaze stayed fixed on the girl raging with Originium energy in front of him.
Truthfully, Steven had the time to stop Specter earlier. What he hadn't mentioned was that he was curious about what would happen if someone else drank the milk. So, he'd let it happen.
But now, it seemed the reaction was far more intense than he'd expected.
The milk didn't seem effective for memory-related issues, but for other things? It clearly had some effect. Steven felt relieved. He had been worried it might be useless.
Just as Steven was ready to sit back and watch Skadi try to restrain Specter, perhaps even grabbing some snacks to enjoy the spectacle, Gavial gave him an exasperated glare before running off to find help. Yet, Steven still showed no intention of budging.
Meanwhile, in front of him, Skadi had once again approached the raging girl, determined to pin her down.
But Specter, already driven mad by the pain and devoid of reason, was like a wild beast. She tackled Skadi to the ground.
Though there were no refined techniques, the raw power and the Originium energy leaking from Specter's wounds made the small infirmary feel as if it had been hit by an earthquake.
As Steven debated whether to bet on Specter or Skadi winning, he noticed Gladiia beside him looking sorrowful. For some reason, she had risen to her feet.
"What's wrong?"
Confused, Steven glanced at her. If there was one thing he disliked, it was seeing someone cry—especially a beautiful girl crying out of sadness. It made him deeply uncomfortable.
"Dada, I don't know, but I just don't want to see them fighting and getting hurt. It feels... very uncomfortable here," Gladiia said, her delicate face full of sorrow. She pointed to her chest with a slender finger. She didn't know what this emotion was, but her consciousness conveyed an unbearable feeling to her.
"Can I go stop them?"
Gladiia looked up at Steven with her crimson eyes filled with even more pitiful emotion, softly pleading.
"What's the point of you stepping in? In your current state, you'd just get pinned down and beaten, wouldn't you?"
Rolling his eyes, Steven's face quickly fell, his entertainment ruined.
This is why he regretted picking up such a cheap "daughter." Why did he have to be so meddlesome?
It was such a good fight between beautiful girls, and now it was ruined. How long had he even been watching? Sighing, Steven got to his feet. There was no choice. Until this cheap daughter's illness was cured, he was in her debt. Repairing a broken person's mind wasn't a debt easily repaid.
"Watch your dad perform," he said, his words sounding strange no matter how you interpreted them.
The next moment, Steven disappeared in a blur.
When he reappeared, he was standing right in front of the struggling Skadi and Specter.
Reaching out, he casually grabbed both of their arms. With a slight exertion, the two girls, who had been like rampaging humanoid dragons tearing through everything, were effortlessly separated.
"Ladies, could you both calm down and listen to me for a moment?"
Ignoring their struggles entirely, Steven smiled and tried to reason with them.
"Hmm..."
"Well, I guess there's not much to say. How about you just pause for now?"
After thinking for a while, Steven realized he had no idea what to say in this situation. He couldn't possibly suggest something absurd like swearing eternal friendship on the spot, could he? That would be far too bizarre.
Skadi, stunned by the boy who could intervene in a battle between Abyssal Hunters, subconsciously stopped moving.
However, the same couldn't be said for Specter, who was still consumed by pain. After struggling futilely to break free from Steven's grip, her frenzied instincts took over. She opened her mouth and bit down on Steven's hand.
"Hey! What's with biting people? I haven't even made you pay for drinking my milk, and now you're trying to eat my flesh too? Is there no justice in the world anymore?"
Steven's mouth twitched. Seeing that Skadi had calmed down, he freed the arm holding her without a second thought. Without any chivalrous hesitation, he raised his hand and delivered a precise chop to Specter's neck.
The motion seemed effortless, as if he hadn't used much force. Yet, even though the strike wasn't aimed at her, Skadi felt a chill run down her spine, her battle instincts screaming in fear. If that strike had been meant for her, she wouldn't have stood a chance against it.
Not even the rampaging Specter could have resisted it.
Steven's hand fell lightly on Specter's neck, and the once-raging girl instantly collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
"I know you're worried about her, but don't be. I held back, and her constitution's pretty good. At most, she'll have a stiff neck for a few days. Nothing serious."
Having resolved what could have been a catastrophic crisis for Rhodes Island, Steven casually shook his hand, then looked down at Skadi, who had collapsed to the floor, equally shaken by the scene.
"And by the way, your companion just cost me a whole barrel of milk. That's going on your tab. Let's say it's worth one or two million Lungmen dollars, shall we?"
