Chapter 551: Beat Them Up
Bai Meiyue's words caused Bai Zhan to snap out of his thoughts. He raised his head and looked at his sister with a hint of a frown on his face. He said to Bai Meiyue, "How can you say such a thing? You were only looking out for your nephews; how can I blame you for that?"
Though Bai Zhan was upset over what happened, he was not unreasonable like Feng Qing, who would blame Bai Meiyue for his mistakes. He was the one who took his sons downtown, and it was his mistake that he didn't keep an eye on them. If he were careful, then his sons would certainly be safe and sound.
But he was too confident and thought that he could deal with the zombies and keep his sons safe as well.
Bai Zhan knew that the one who was at fault was he; how could he hold Bai Meiyue accountable then?
"Wasn't I the one who suggested that you take the two of them with you and teach them how to fight with zombies?" said Bai Meiyue with a roll of her eyes. She then said to her brother, "If I hadn't suggested such a thing, then Qian Han and Jiuque would have stayed at home, and nothing would have happened to them. The fault lies with me, does it not?"
Bai Jixuan jumped to his feet when he heard Bai Meiyue blame herself. He pointed to himself and said, "What do you mean by it's your fault? How could it be your fault? If anything, it's my fault that I didn't go with my elder brother and allowed such a thing to happen. If I were careful, then not a single zombie would have dared to get close to Qian Han and Jiuque. I should have followed you."
Bai Zhan was speechless when he heard the words of his two younger siblings. His gaze flickered from Bai Meiyue to Bai Jixuan, and he sighed, "You two… why are you adding trouble to the situation when it's already problematic enough? How can this be related to the two of you when I, as their father, failed in taking care of them?"
"Ah Zhan, they are not adding trouble." Mother Bai, who had been sitting quietly on the side, could no longer stay silent when she saw that her son was still blaming himself. She raised her head and looked at her eldest son before saying to him, "They are trying to make you understand that what happened had little to do with you. You did your best while trying to protect your sons. What happened was something that was simply out of your control; whom can you blame for it? You didn't know that the zombies were hiding or that they had gotten smarter. It's not like you deliberately left Qian Han and Jiuque behind."
"Of course, I didn't!" How could he when he wished to keep his sons close to him all the time? They were so precious and had suffered so much at the hands of his wife that he wished he could give them the moon if they asked for it. How could he leave them behind to suffer at the hands of zombies?
"Then there is no need for you to blame yourself," said Mother Bai in a final sort of voice. "I know that you feel guilty, and it's only right. It proves that you are human, but there is no need to blame yourself until you start drowning in guilt. What happened was a mistake — a dangerous one. But we can only learn from it and hope for the best because even if you shed tears of blood now, the past can never be rewritten. So for the sake of your sons, pull yourself together, Bai Zhan!"
She then glanced at Bai Zhan with a hint of disdain before saying, "Or are you going to break down when your sons need you the most? Bai Zhan, you made the same mistake when you married Feng Qing. You could have avoided a lot of trouble if only you had maintained that you never touched her or insisted on taking her to do the tests. As long as you had stayed put, that woman and her family could never have schemed against you. But you went soft and couldn't hold your ground."
"Talking about how you were still in the wrong and whatnot."
Once she finished speaking, Bai Zhan flushed red in shame. He raised his head and looked at Bai Meiyue and Bai Juxuan, who were looking at him. While Bai Jixuan looked like he very much agreed with what his mother said, Bai Meiyue looked troubled as if she couldn't believe that he truly allowed someone to scheme against him like that.
"Mom, why are you bringing up the old matters? How many years has it been since it happened?" Back then, he was a young lad, and he had a gentle temper; because of this, Feng Qing and the Feng family schemed against him quite easily. They asked him to take responsibility, and because Bai Zhan truly believed that he might have done something wrong, even if he was drugged, it was his mistake; he married Feng Qing.
His mother was rather against it and even stopped speaking to him because of this. She told him that the matter could have been easily sorted if he had just brought Feng Qing to the hospital if she was really involved with him, and if something really happened between the two of them.
However, because he was feeling guilty and helpless, he allowed that woman to step into his life.
Mother Bai harumphed. "I have no intention of saying anything to you either, but who asked you to act like a sissy all the time? You should learn something from your sister; she killed more than ten people in a day and yet she didn't brood over it and accepted that there was nothing wrong with what she did—"
"She killed what?!"
