Chapter 547: Can No Longer Sit Still
While Dacheng was planning his new move, Bai Meiyue was rubbing her feet with a painful look on her face. She had used too much strength just now, which had led her to suffer some sweet pain. It wasn't painful, but it was still problematic.
She looked at Xiao Wu, who was staring at her with a complicated look on his face, and asked, "You want me to throw those corpses away from here? What about their families?" Once Chief Lin and the others left, Bai Meiyue called Xiao Wu and told him that he needed to deal with the corpses of the dead soldiers lying outside.
"You can take the corpses back to their families if you want," said Bai Meiyue as she applied a generous amount of pain-relieving ointment on her feet. "However, they are all infected by the corpse plague. If these corpses are not taken care of properly, then they certainly will cause a lot of trouble."
It was bad enough that the doomsday virus was running rampant, and if the corpse plague started to gain momentum, then death would be the only thing that they would see around them; either the living would turn into the living dead, or they would crumble and take down the living with them.
No matter what, the situation outside was going to turn disastrous in a few days.
When Xiao Wu heard that those soldiers were infected by the corpse plague, he stiffened. He had seen a few people die due to this plague. The girl whose father was holding her before she died due to all of her organs failing? He passed away in a matter of a few hours.
Hours! Not days.
Just the very thought was enough to scare him to death.
And those who died due to the plague didn't have an easy time, even when they were dying. Not even bones were left behind after they got infected by the corpse plague, and their condition worsened.
"Then… Then it's too dangerous to leave those corpses outside," Xiao Wu gasped.
"Why else do you think I froze them to death?" Bai Meiyue arched her brow and questioned Xiao Wu. When the soldiers came to look for her, she had already noticed that their skin was hanging low on their bones, their eyes were slightly red, like they were about to turn into zombies, but at the same time, their body functions were like those of a human.
All the signs of getting infected with the corpse plague.
Though Bai Meiyue was annoyed with the actions of those soldiers, she would have left them with a breath if there was a chance for them to stay alive, but there wasn't one, which was why she killed them.
She then pointed to the special protective suits that she had bartered with one of the patrons of the barter system and said to Xiao Wu, "Make sure that those who are handling those corpses wear these suits. No one is allowed to touch those bodies without wearing them, and once you return home, I will have someone send special soaps to your apartment; you can share those with your men. As long as you listen to me, you will be fine."
Xiao Wu nodded. He didn't want to take care of the corpses, but they also had no choice; they had been waiting for the army to make a move, but three hours had passed by, and no one came to take those corpses away.
Xiao Wu didn't wish to cause trouble for himself, but now that the fourth hour was about to get over, he knew that those army personnel were not going to come over, nor were they going to take care of these corpses. If they didn't want these corpses to start deteriorating right in front of them, then they had no other choice but to take care of them on their own.
"I understand. I will distribute these suits to my boys and ask them to take these corpses to the base," said Xiao Wu. "If the families of these men want to take care of them and perform funeral rites, then we will hand them the bodies."
"Alright." Bai Meiyue didn't refuse. Anyway, the ice parasites would suppress the corpse plague for twenty-four hours. Unless the families kept these bodies for more than a day, everything should be fine.
Xiao Wu took his leave after discussing some more things with Bai Meiyue.
Once he was gone, Bai Meiyue turned to look at her mother. With her hands moving, she said to her mother, "Mom, pack up as quickly as possible. You saw what happened today. I am afraid that these things will happen again and again. And the corpse plague… I am afraid that the situation will not get any better."
She had wanted to keep her mother with her, but now that the situation was getting dangerous, Bai Meiyue thought that it was better to take her mother to the mansion in the main city. Even if the situation outside was risky, it was better than staying in the base now. With the Corpse plague running rampant, it wouldn't take long for people to fall sick.
If that happened, then they would be like spiders trapped in a jar filled with dangerous smoke.
And that was not all. Bai Meiyue turned and glanced at the bush that was still fluttering. These days, she had noticed a sudden surge of mutated flesh-eating worms. Those white maggots had turned and shifted into a beetle-like form, and if she was not wrong, they were still changing. They had turned more and more like those pesky cockroaches.
If things continued to develop like they did in the past, then it wouldn't be long before they would develop wings.
Once these worms developed wings, it would be a sight straight from hell.
Bai Meiyue had once been surrounded by the storm of these flesh-eating worms, and even now, the memory of that sight sent chills down her spine.
