Apocalyptic Disasters: Carrying a bun and hoarding supplies

Chapter 459: A Thief's Begging.

"Isn't that stupid?" Bai Jixuan frowned and questioned. "Shouldn't they deal with this trouble when it's still gaining momentum?"

Bai Zhan shook his head. He was sometimes surprised by how naive his brother was. He sighed and patiently explained, "You are wrong, Brother. The base has been established on the promise that it has been made safe for the survival of the survivors who have no power or skills. The reason people support and stand for the base is that they feel that they are being protected."

"What if they find out that the very reason they joined the base was false? Wouldn't it shake up the trust and belief that they have in the base? That would be troublesome."

After he finished speaking, Bai Jixuan pursed his lips. He sat down on the couch and muttered, "I wonder what makes people trust them more than us? We treat our members better than the base, and yet they are running to the base."

Bai Meiyue frowned when she heard Bai Jixuan's response. She couldn't help but ask, "Who ran to the base?" Did someone leave when she was not paying attention?

"Its Wang Ba." Bai Jixuan didn't confront that man, but that didn't mean that he didn't hate him for betraying them. When Bai Jixuan thought about how they were working in the greenhouse just a few days ago, laughing and joking with one another, he felt like he really didn't know Wang Ba.

Bai Zhan frowned. But he didn't seem too shocked or hurt. He simply said, "It's fine; since he wants to leave, then let him leave. Anyway, who would want to work in the greenhouse all day when they are being tempted with the temptation of becoming an official?"

Bai Meiyue, on the other hand, scowled. When she thought about the honest-looking Wang Ba and the number of meals that he had eaten at her house, her mood couldn't help but sink. She thought about how she thought she knew Wang Ba but it seemed like even after going through the apocalypse, she was still a bad judge of character.

Though she had expected to be betrayed, she never expected the betrayal to come from someone so close.

She frowned hard and wondered how much information Wang Ba had handed to Yu Miaomiao in exchange for getting the position as a soldier. She listened to her elder brother telling her not to worry and hummed lightly before taking her leave with Lei Qian.

"You seem worried," Lei Qian said as he took the jacket that Bai Meiyue usually wore and placed it on her shoulders.

Bai Meiyue frowned when she heard his remark. She said, "It's not that I am worried. I am just wondering how many people will abandon our team and then follow Yu Miaomiao." She was not a sentimental person, but she still didn't like the idea of her team members stabbing her in the back when she had given them so many comforts.

Lei Qian sighed. He said to her, "There is no point in thinking about such things. Since they have chosen their path, we can only leave them to it. Anyway, people are like this—no matter how much you do for someone, they would still look at the greenery on the other side. Don't think that you did something wrong; people like Wang Ba are quick to take on benefits."

He had someone like him in his own family and knew them very well.

Bai Meiyue glanced at him. She said to him, "When did I say that I am thinking that I did something wrong? I know that I did nothing wrong, and it's the human heart that is too hard to understand."

"It's good that you are this clear-headed." Lei Qian smiled with a hint of relief on his face. "I was worrying about you for nothing."

As the two of them stepped down the last stair of the second floor, they saw a man bowing in front of Shen Zhen.

"Doctor Shen, it has been a while?"

Shen Zhen, who was surprised by the sudden action of the man, frowned. She looked at him and questioned, "Who are you?"

The man lowered his head even further. He stammered, "I … I am Yang Wei. The male nurse who used to work in your hospital."

When Shen Zhen heard the introduction of the man, her brows furrowed. She didn't know this man, but she had a vague idea about him. Just as she was about to ask the man a bit more about him, she heard the nurse behind her gasp.

"It's you! The one who was caught stealing the medicines and bandages," the nurse exclaimed. When Shen Zhen turned and looked at her, the nurse reminded her, "He is Yang Wei, the one who was caught by the security guards—he was caught stealing medicines and selling them on the black market to those who could not buy them. He ran away after he was caught, so he escaped the punishment."

As soon as Shen Zhen realised who this man was, her expression turned sombre. She turned and looked at the man with a frown on her face. As a doctor who placed saving lives above everything, she could never accept someone like Yang Wei. A person who placed benefits over the lives of those who were suffering, she could never like them.

She narrowed her eyes and looked at the man and questioned, "And what do you want from me?"

"I—I—I—I—I—I am here to sell my supplies to you," said Yang Wei as he pointed to the boxes behind him. As he spoke, he showed the medicines to Shen Zhen and said to her, "Look at this, Doctor Shen; these medicines are all new, and the expiry dates are still far off. You will not lose anything if you agree to buy these medicines."

Shen Zhen looked at the medicines that the man was showing her and had to admit that they were indeed in a good condition, but —

The idea of accepting stolen goods didn't feel good; after all, these medicines could have been used to save the lives of others.

When Yang Wei saw that Shen Zhen was not saying anything, he turned panicked. He said to Shen Zhen, "Doctor Shen, don't worry. These medicines are clean. I was working in a warehouse when those monsters popped out. I swear that I didn't steal these medicines when the world was still working fine."

Only then did Shen Zhen feel a bit better. However, she still eyed Yang Wei with a hint of wariness. She asked, "What do you want in exchange?"

"It's like this, Doctor Shen: I know a lot about your medical abilities before the end of the world. I had seen you save the lives of many women. I am willing to hand over all of my medical supplies; in exchange, I just want you to take my wife. She is pregnant and weak. I am worried that she will collapse at the time of giving birth."

Yang Wei's eyes turned red, and he said, "I know that I am a really cruel man, but my wife is nice. She doesn't know anything, and my child is innocent, Doctor Shen. Please help them."

As the man spoke, he was about to kneel in front of Shen Zhen; his eyes were red as he sobbed silently. He wanted to save his wife's life, but nothing seemed to be working. He finally heard about Shen Zhen, whom he knew very well. He knew that the skills that the woman had were not something that could be found just about anywhere.

If there was someone who could save the life of his wife and child, then it was Shen Zhen.

Shen Zhen, however, did not dare to accept the kowtow of the man. She stepped aside and looked at Bai Meiyue, who shrugged and then said to her, "If you want to accept, then you can take his supplies. Anyway, if you don't accept it, someone else will, but they might not guarantee the safety of his wife's life."

Bai Meiyue had blind trust in Shen Zhen. Thus, she was not surprised that the man was willing to go to such lengths to make Shen Zhen accept his wife and admit her into the hospital.

"Accept him, Doctor Shen," said Zhou Hongbei. "Miss Bai is right. It's better to take these medical supplies rather than handing them to someone who will take advantage of this man and his wife's condition."

When Shen Zhen heard Bai Meiyue's words and Zhou Hongbei's advice, her expression changed. She turned to look at the man and said to him, "Fine, since that is the case, then I will accept your wife."

As soon as Yang Wei heard Shen Zhen's words, his eyes lit up. He kowtowed in front of Shen Zhen and said to her gratefully, "Thank you! Thank you! Doctor Shen, you are really a good doctor!"
