Chapter 45: Class
"Hello," greeted Sengrar to the goblin holding the stand, surrounded by quite powerful humans with auras only slightly weaker than Rargnes, who remained in the top 3 of their group. Second to Sengrar and maybe third to Jean.
The Middle Age men all wore magical armor and weapons, yet they trembled from their reputations. He heard discussions. "Is it him?"
"Shut up and serve. We're here for this."
Rargnes felt power from the swords, armor, shields, spears, and magic staffs. He pointed as one, and the man hurriedly brought it for him to test.
Sengrar shook his head when he studied the magic wand.
"I already have better," he said. Only now did he realize the strength of the sceptre he had obtained.
"Do you have anything to become stronger with magic?" asked Rargnes. The man nodded. "Follow me."
They entered the back of the shop and saw a room with a goblin mage wearing a hood and inscriptions on his violet garments, like ancient runes or hieroglyphs.
"It's quite expensive," said the pressured mage goblin. Rargnes felt pressure emanating from this enemy. One of the faithful of the prime minister. "and no discounts."
Rargnes listened to the price and agreed. Sengrar went first. The goblin provided a plaque spell with countless small squares with green inside and sorts of lives, such as energy fireflies. He closed his eyes and meditated before placing his hand on Sengrar, creating a mage rune inside his body.
The goblin's eyes seemed surprised. "His Majesty would be very interested to know that a mage of your level is under his control," said the goblin. "You have an enormous amount of magic and a beautiful weapon."
The goblin also had a scepter from which Sengrar felt a powerful magical presence.
"How do I compare to the noble?"
The goblin mage hesitated. "He's stronger. It's normal. His family has been behind him to provide him with the best since the beginning, and he has hunted in his lands to increase his magic. But the king could give you a baron position with your level."
Sengrar nodded and went to join RedStar and Rargnes.
"So?" asked Rargnes.
"I need to test," he said, paying and going outside. There, he cast a fireball the size of half a man.
"Damn!"
Rargnes went after him, and after the rune was successfully drawn inside him, he asked.
"Do you have the tools for a class upgrade?"
"Of course, but I need a token."
Rargnes passed him.
The goblin made him eat quite a few potions and foods in succession before standing beside him and manipulating his mana to activate the token.
Then, he heard the system for the first time in a long time.
[Congratulations on the change of class!]
He found himself back in the white space, with a panel before him.
[High Warrior: Each one of your kills gives you an increase of 100% of the energy that would normally enter your body.]
[Defensive Warrior: Your body resistance increases by 50%. That statistic remains even after your power increases.
[Strong Warrior: The strength of your blows increases by 50%. That statistic remains even after your power increases.]
[The class Warrior increases by 20% the energy acquired from all sources]
He pondered, then chose Defensive Warrior.
"This will be the best after this apocalypse end. I'll better resist illness and live long."---
Time continued to pass.
It had barely been a year since the apocalypse, and their world wasn't yet close. They didn't know what was close to it or if the king just did it on a whim. Even if the apocalypse was an opportunity, it was less for mages than for warriors.
After a few months of training, Rargnes becomes half a mage together with being a warrior. Sadly, they did not find any token - people used them or they were sold in the other world for quite some price - enough to have paid his debt. He had bought a small magic staff and was able to cast basic spells.
They sometimes made agreements with human groups to lure them. Upon returning with their new shiny, energetic, and magical equipment, they recruited some people from the other world.
Their operations base was larger, and they had taken almost everything they could from the area, so they regulary switched and passed most of their time in truck.
"We'll need to go further," said Rargnes in a truck driven by Noah.
"Come on! Easy!" said Sengrar with a smile, meditating to increase his magic. "You should meditate too! You can get more magic by doing so than taking those disgusting vials!"
"It gives a lot of magic," Rargnes corrected, gulping down a blue potion.
"Well, barely a day of magic training," said Sengrar.
For Rargnes, it was nearly a week of hard work, and his talent was above average. But magic was exponential; the more time, the more valuable it became.
He just wondered when he would reach his level. Would he ever?
The truck shook.
"Damn! Drive better!" shouted Rargnes. "Sengrar needs to concentrate!" He climbed up to the driving position - this part being soundproofed - and climbed up. Noah was lying in his seat, no longer driving. The windshield was pierced by what seemed to be a bullet, which had penetrated the Noah's forehead.
