Chapter 39: 38. Raggedy princes, the junk paradise and two broke lads
The journey to the Junkyard was surprisingly silent, interrupted only by the occasional wild animal passing by and the sound of the wind blowing through the trees.
Finn was taken aback by how normal their route seemed. He had expected a world like Adventure Time to be more chaotic. Or something random happening out of nowhere. Finn had of course conveniently forgotten what had happened earlier.
What had happened earlier? He did not know!
After thirty minutes, they arrived near the Junkyard.
Finn was acutely aware of their arrival, not so much because of the map he was using to navigate, but rather due to the overwhelming smell that greeted them.
Even before they reached the Junkyard's entrance, the smell enveloped them, like a smelly hug that grew stronger with each step they took.
"It smells horrible," Jake said, covering his nose, though he was not too bothered otherwise.
After another three minutes, they finally arrived at the entrance of the Junkyard.
"Ooo's Junkyard," read the words emblazoned on a damaged sign in red.
Finn stared at the towering piles of garbage, mountains of trash that seemed to reach endlessly into the sky, threatening to topple over at the slightest push.
The Junkyard extended as far as Finn could see, with no end in sight to the endless bags of trash that covered the ground.
The smell was dreadful. The thought of getting garbage juice on him sent a chill down Finn's spine—a memory he would want to lock away in his mind forever if it ever happened.
He swallowed the bile that rose in his throat and turned to Jake.
"Are you sure about this, Finn? I am sure we can find a way to get you that computer using other means," Jake said, observing Finn's expression, which he found amusing.
It was true; they could acquire a computer through other channels. However, those options would either be too expensive given their current financial situation, or involve illegal means, something Jake hoped Finn would not consider.
"That is true, Jake. But the main reason I wanted to search for a computer here is because of the sheer possibility of what we might find. Think of this as a treasure hunt," Finn explained.
"And we're also broke," Finn added, and Jake nodded in agreement. The reasoning was sound.
"Now, Jake, it's time!" Finn said, and they both nodded at each other in agreement.
Finn took off his bag and pulled out the two hazmat suits they had prepared for this special occasion. He was determined to avoid any garbage juice coming into contact with him—what a nightmare that would be!
They quickly put on the yellow suits and zipped them up.
"Ready?" Finn asked, giving Jake a thumbs up.
"Ready."
Finn then took out a device that would assist them in searching for the computer and other equipment. It was a chemical scouter—a device designed to locate specific types of chemical discharges, and the electrical signals associated with them.
His goal was to locate the specific readings that usually came of electronic parts. The only problem was the type of electronics they would be looking for.
The device would help them navigate this massive dump more efficiently, and Finn hoped it would not encounter interference from other devices.
When Finn turned it on, it began to beep.
"Is that thing of yours working?" Jake asked, looking at the machine skeptically. He wondered when Finn had found the time to create such a device and when he had developed an interest in science. 'Hmmm.'
"Yeah, it should be working properly. When we get closer to what I am looking for, it will start beeping more intensely."
Finn tapped the screen to demonstrate the device's steady beeping.
"Let's go."
They nodded and moved toward the entrance.
"Halt, strangers! Why are you trespassing in my kingdom?"
A female voice called out, a tone that was at once regal, shy, and weak.
Finn and Jake exchanged a glance, Finn wondering which kingdom the voice referred to. All he could see around them were piles of trash bags, old items, and other discarded debris.
Was this some kind of kingdom of trash? The thought made Finn want to laugh, but the strange nature of his world even made such an odd possibility seem plausible.
The two exchanged a glance and started looking around, searching for the source of the voice, but their search yielded no results. Was this person invisible, or were they simply not looking hard enough?
"It is considered rude to call out to two strangers without showing yourself." Jake finally said, tired of searching.
There was silence for a while and the voice replied once again "Huh, I'm up here," the voice said, understanding that she had failed to attract their attention. Finn and Jake passed the entrance, beyond the poorly made gate, and entered the Junkyard.
Finn thought that if this was some sort of trap, it was working spectacularly at the moment.
They arrived at a strange amalgamation of different machine parts, trash, and countless other objects that formed what Finn could only describe as a very ugly throne—uglier than the one he remembered from that show with dragons and ice zombies.
The throne was placed upon a broken, curved stone figure that Finn thought resembled Bonnie.
"Hey, now that you're here, what do you want in my kingdom?" the female voice asked, a hint of shyness breaking through her otherwise authoritative tone.
Finn finally managed to put a face to the voice—or it was more accurate to say he could put clothing to the voice. Either way, he was surprised to see a talking piece of cloth speaking to him.
The Raggedy Princess, as Finn recalled her, looked to be made made of worn-out material like a rag doll, resembling a torn sock.
Her mouth was stitched together, with loose stitches allowing her to open it. Her left eye was a light green button, and her right eye was just a hole. On the right side of her dress, there was a light brown patch sewn on the right side of her dress. She had no arms and wore a piece of glass on her head as a crown.
She also had brown hair that was made of yarn or other material, even a wig. One of her legs (or leggings or stockings) was pale blue, while the other leg was striped red and light grey, resembling a pair of socks.
Oddly enough, she had a surprisingly feminine figure even though she was a ragdoll person.
This fact made Finn think about that one episode where The Og Finn was sent to a pillow dimension and started an entire new life with a pillow person. Finn wondered mostly if that were possible, but magic was recently becoming the answer to any question he could not explain.
Maybe if Raggedy Princess had more human features, Finn would be more attracted to her.
"What is your business in the Raggenbone Kingdom?" Raggedy Princess asked. Finn felt surprised when he noticed a visible blush on her face for reasons known only to her.
Finn pitied her in a way, but that was beside their current objective.
"We're here looking for parts to make a machine in this beautiful kingdom of yours," Finn said, obviously lying about the beauty part—nothing was appealing in the visible area. But he knew her character well enough to know this approach would work.
"Beautiful... do you think my kingdom is beautiful?" Raggedy asked her tone quietly happy. Her body lifted from the throne where she had been slumped, and for the first time, Finn noticed how tall she was—strangely even taller than himself.
"Yes, we just wish to take some things from this place, and then we'll be on our way." Finn encouraged the conversation to move forward, noticing that she began muttering to herself instead of replying.
"Oh! Yes, you are allowed to take whatever you want," Raggedy quickly said, and Finn was sure she was blushing this time. He nodded and motioned for Jake that they should start leaving.
"Thank you, Princess. We will be on our way," Finn said, waving as Jake followed along.
"Drop by and say goodbye before you leave, stranger," she said weakly, intending for Finn not to hear, but his ears still caught her words.
"Sure thing, Princess, and my name is Finn Campbell," he replied, giving a final wave as they moved deeper into the junkyard, under the fleeting giggles of the Raggedy Princess.
Once they had left, Raggedy suddenly recalled that she had forgotten to warn them about the dangers within the junkyard—dangers even she found herself unable to face. A wave of worry grew inside her.
But Raggedy reasoned that the two must have known about the dangers before venturing into the junkyard, right?
She only hoped that was the case.
"Come back safely," she said silently to the wind.
