The soft click of heels echoed in the halls as Osvaldo strode toward the dining room. His dark hair spilled over his shoulders, golden eyes glimmering with excitement. His lips curved into a smile.
His Penguin had cooked for him.
Osvaldo felt like the luckiest man alive. Not only was she beautiful and soft in his arms, she was now his little chef too. The thought of her tiny hands chopping, stirring, seasoning just for him made his chest swell. He couldn't wait to taste the "goodness" she had made.
But the moment he stepped into the dining room, his smile vanished. Sitting there, comfortably chatting with his Penguin, was Xavier Bloodsworth.
Osvaldo's jaw clenched. He stared at her laugh wholeheartedly to another man. Even though Xavier was her father, to Osvaldo he was another man.
He hated sharing. Especially her smiles, they belonged to him only.
Still, his heart fluttered again when his eyes fell on the dishes laid on the table. The thought that she had cooked all of this just for him softened him. He moved straight to her side, ignoring Xavier completely.
"Penguin," he murmured, his voice gentle.
"Her name," Xavier cut in, his voice sharp, "is Penelope. I'd appreciate it if you showed my daughter some respect."
Osvaldo turned his head slowly, golden eyes locking with Xavier's gray ones. He wasn't one for arguments; he preferred action. But this man was really asking for it.
"I'll call my wife whatever name I desire. You can never understand things about marriage father in law." Osvaldo gave a smug smile on that made Xavier's blood boil.
"That's enough, Father," Penny sighed, rushing to Osvaldo's side. She held his sleeve, smiling bashfully as she helped him into the chair beside her. Xavier rolled his eyes at her silly acts.
It was clear his daughter was so in love with this man. What pained him was why it had to be him. Why not someone else? Does it really have to be Osvaldo Adkins? A boy he hated with passion.
Xavier Bloodsworth has always been used to people bowing to him, Osvaldo is the first man that has ever challenged him.
Both men kept their eyes locked on each other, silent sparks crackling across the table. They didn't like each other, and both knew it.
"Here, taste this. It's my first time cooking," Penny said eagerly pushing the bowl of soup to Osvaldo before dishing out her father soup.
Osvaldo finally dragged his eyes from his father in law. He would need to teach him a little lesson so that he doesn't mess with him next time.
He picked the spoon from the table and dug into the soup his penguin had prepared. He pushed Xavier's negativity aside and gave his full attention back to his Penguin again. Osvaldo smiled staring at the soup.
The thought of his Penguin preparing all of these just for him made his heart flutter.
He was about to drink from his spoon when he caught someone else trying to eat his too. Osvaldo picked his fork and aimed at him. Both metal clashed against each other and they fell on the floor.
"My Penguin prepared it for me. It's only normal I be the first one to taste it father in law." He said with a smile and Xavier clenched his hands into a fist.
This boy was too arrogant for him!
"Osvaldo." Penny called.
"There are other ways to communicate boy! You use words not acting like a madman."
"Father," Penny scolded, glaring at him. She had finally concluded she wasn't living with men. These two are babies in men bodies. She didn't know what else to do to get them to get along.
She cared for them so much.
"But he started it," Xavier muttered.
"I only asked to be the first," Osvaldo replied casually. "You're in my home, Father-in-law. Don't make me uncomfortable."
"If you don't want me here, then give me back my daughter."
"You..."
"Enough!" Penny suddenly raised her voice, her blue eyes flashing. "Stop it, both of you! You're acting like children."
The two men froze as she scolded them.
"Can we all just have a meal without fight?" She cried out. She was tired of both men throwing jabs at each other over her.
"You'll always be my father, Father, no one can take your place." Penny said.
"Osvaldo and I are in a contract marriage and I'll leave once it's... Over." Penny's voice wavered at the end. "I already explained everything to you before father, please stop fighting Osvaldo, he's my husband for now." She said.
Penny wondered if he didn't feel even if it's only a little sadness at her words. Would he miss her if she left now? After everything they done and shared.
She had only a few months left. This has become her biggest fear. Would Osvaldo really divorce her after their agreed time?
Though the madman seated beside her gave no reaction to her words, his heart twisted in ways he couldn't explain. Osvaldo's grip on his spoon tightened.
He couldn't imagine a life without his penguin. He had gotten so used to her, too attached to her warmth. The cold and void life he used to love before he met her was now gone.
But it was useless promising a woman love. He was a monster. Monsters don't love, they ruined.
He took a spoonful of the soup into his mouth and paused. He couldn't tell if the soup was spoilt or his mouth just suddenly turned sour due to his anger.
Xavier stared at the yoinge man for a while, and then picked another spoon and drank the soup only to give the same reaction too. He wondered how Osvaldo was on his third spoon when this tasted so bad.
His child didn't know how to cook at all.
"Tell me how it is? Do you love it?" Both men turned to look at the innocent cute bunny seated before them. Her smile felt like a thousand stars glittering in their eyes. Her blue eyes glowed under the light as she waited eagerly for their review.
They couldn't hurt her feelings, not when she looked this cute. It was obvious she had put in so much work into creating a beautiful dishes as these ones.
"Beautiful... And... tasty." Xavier said immediately struggling to swallow the soup in his mouth, but he couldn't. It was so bad.
"Are you sure the chef didn't help you cook this?" Osvaldo's white teeth was in display as he stared at his penguin. Penny laughed.
"It's all me Osvaldo." She watched him on his fifth spoon, eating like it was nothing.
"Ah, I forgot. I have something else to add." Penny clapped her hands and hurried out of the dining room.
"This is bad." Xavier spat everything into his napkin, wiping the remnant from his lips.
"It's not that bad." Osvaldo swallowed his meal. He had tasted worse, so this wasn't surprising. At least he knows one thing his Penguin wasn't good at. Cooking.
Even if she's bad at that, she was still a full package to him. What's the point of cooking when they can hire all of the chefs in the world, plus he knew how to cook, so he could always cook for her.
"At least you know how terrible of a father you have been to your child." Osvaldo lifted his gaze to the man before him.
"I'm the only man that can eat the poison my Penguin prepares so before you talk her into leaving me, you should think twice." He smiled, taking another spoonful of the soup.
"We both know you don't love my daughter so why are you not willing to let her go?" Xavier threw in the first question.
Since they were finally having a conversation Xavier thought it was only right to ask.
He had no idea why a man would be with a woman he didn't love.
"We made a deal like she said." Osvaldo said.
"But it seems different from the one she knows about. Does she know you're going to trap her for the rest of her life?"
"It's not called trap when she's my successor." Osvaldo replaced plainly. "It's a deal which you're also a benefactor of." He said.
"I am more than capable of taking good care of my child. We don't need your wealth or whatever. Just let my daughter go." Xavier said.
"That. Can. Never. Happen!" Osvaldo's words were final and immediately, Penny rushed back in.
"Ketchup. I forgot ketchup." She announced with a smile.
"Do you want some father?" She asked but Xavier quickly shook his head.
"Osvaldo?" Osvaldo took it from her and added it to his soup and continued eating.
Penny on the other hand, added the ketchup to her soup and took a spoonful only to pause. She spat everything out immediately and turned to Osvaldo, but he had already emptied his plate.
