Chapter 0312: The Wager Between the Human Clan and Demons

"Senior, please send me out."

"I am ready."

Lin Fan silently observed his surroundings, sensing that the situation was more complicated than he'd imagined. This place was likely no ordinary part of the real world.

"You are truly difficult to deal with," said the unknown entity.

Lin Fan feigned surprise: "What do you mean by that, Senior?"

"I mean exactly what I said—you are difficult to deal with. The Human Clan truly is clever. I've been speaking with you for so long, and yet you consistently avoid the heart of the matter. Have you noticed something? I wanted you to comply willingly, but it seems I'll have to resort to force," the Old Demon replied slowly.

Lin Fan had driven him to the brink of madness.

He no longer wanted to continue the charade.

There was no point anymore.

What was there left to act out?

The Old Demon couldn't gain any advantage from him at all—not even for a single moment.

"When exactly did you figure it out?" asked the Old Demon.

Lin Fan scratched his head and replied with a confused expression, "Senior, what are you talking about? I don't understand. What discovery? I really have no idea what you're saying. Could you be more straightforward? I'm not very smart, you see."

"Hmm?"

The Old Demon hesitated. For a moment, he wondered if Lin Fan truly was a fool, unable to grasp what he had been saying—if everything so far had purely been coincidental.

But very quickly,

he discarded that thought.

Impossible.

Someone who could cultivate to this level couldn't possibly be an idiot. If he believed otherwise, then he would be the real fool.

"Enough pretending. I won't play along either. But everything I mentioned earlier was true: the place where your Human Clan cultivators dwell once belonged to us Demons."

"We Demons truly longed to coexist with your Human Clan. Of course, that was on the condition of raising you as livestock."

The Old Demon shed his mask of civility, unwilling to waste any more words with Lin Fan.

Everything said earlier was pointless.

He had genuinely thought it would be easy to deceive Lin Fan.

What a pity!

This Human was too cunning. Not only did his tricks fail, Lin Fan had repeatedly turned the tables on him instead.

When experts clash, they are evenly matched, neither gaining the upper hand.

"Senior, there's no need to speak so harshly. I understand you're angry. But have you ever reflected on why you've ended up like this?"

"The Demon Clan and you Demons were originally one and the same, yet now the Demon Clan lives peacefully while you're forced to remain in the Northern Desolation."

"Have you ever considered why this is?"

Lin Fan didn't strike immediately just because the other had revealed his true face.

What was the point of all that build-up earlier, only to give up on deceiving him out of frustration? That seemed like such a waste.

Therefore,

he was willing to take on everything that came before.

The Old Demon said coldly, "Of course, I've thought about it. How could I not? It's because you Human Cultivators are nothing but hypocrites! The Demon Clan was originally of the same root as us, but in their greed for territory, they joined forces with you Humans to drive us into the Northern Desolation."

"This grudge I carry in my heart—I will never forget it."

By the end, the Old Demon's voice was chilling, like a demon roaring in bitter anguish from the depths of the Abyss.

He longed for revenge, but remained powerless to achieve it.

"Hmm, I can sense the unwillingness in your tone," Lin Fan remarked calmly.

The Old Demon snapped, "What do you know? What do your Human Cultivators know? When we Demons eat humans, you call it an atrocity worthy of the wrath of heaven. But when you Humans eat us, you call us livestock, delicacies from the wild. Why is it this way?"

Lin Fan responded, "Simple. Survival of the fittest. Truth and discourse are forever dictated by the stronger party—and your Demon Clan is weak."

Hearing this, the enraged Old Demon was stunned, as though he hadn't expected Lin Fan to say such a thing.

Lin Fan added, "Don't think there's anything wrong with my words. I'm just telling the truth."

"Since fate has brought us together, why not sit down and talk? It would be a meaningful exchange for both your Demon Clan and my Human Clan. What do you think?"

He sat cross-legged, waiting quietly.

For now, there was no way to leave, and he hadn't found a solution.

So it was better to have a proper conversation with his adversary.

"Are you stalling for time?" the Old Demon asked coldly.

Lin Fan chuckled, "Why would I need to stall? This is your territory—you should know how to leave and whether or not it's safe. Why assume I'd have such thoughts?"

Before long,

a dense demonic aura coalesced in the distance and transformed into a blurry silhouette. Although its features were unclear, its posture mirrored Lin Fan's: sitting cross-legged. The two now faced each other, separated by several hundred meters.

"Is this your true form?" asked Lin Fan.

The Old Demon replied, "No."

Lin Fan sighed, "Ah, Senior, I still prefer your earlier form—talkative and approachable. This cold indifference feels unfamiliar, but do as you like. Being true to yourself is every cultivator's dream."

He spoke with calm composure, showing no fear. Being willing to sit down for a chat was already a promising start.

"What do you want to discuss?" asked the Old Demon indifferently.

Indeed, the friendliness from before was gone, replaced with a chilling detachment.

What a pity.

A smile played on Lin Fan's lips. After a moment's thought, he suggested, "How about we discuss the troubles between the Human Clan, the Demon Clan, and the Demon Tribe? Why the Demon Clan was allowed to remain, while you Demons were driven into the Northern Desolation."

"There's a major reason behind this, which has greatly influenced your Demon kind."

The Old Demon initially seemed impatient, given the history of animosity between Demons and Humans left little to discuss.

Yet Lin Fan's words piqued his curiosity.

He found himself wanting to uncover the truth behind it all.

Lin Fan continued, "The reason you Demons were forced into the Northern Desolation wasn't that Humans couldn't tolerate you—it was that the Demon Clan allied with the Human Clan. It was either you Demons who would leave, or the Demon Clan. Because the Demon Clan chose to seek humanity's favor and join hands with them, you Demons became the outcasts."

"So, consider this—doesn't it make sense?"

The Old Demon didn't respond. Perhaps he agreed.

Lin Fan pressed on, "In today's mortal world, there are still Demons—though their strength is weak. They prey on common folk, but mortals will slay them when given the chance. It forms a cycle of cause and effect."

"The blame lies with the first Demon who ate humans. It was their act that revealed mortals to be delicious prey. When the first mortal slew a Demon, they discovered that Demons weren't as fearsome as believed."

"Over time, this unconscious cycle emerged."

"It is permitted by the Heavens."

"In the Cultivation World, conflict between cultivators and Demons is just another aspect of the struggle for power, and not all that significant."

"Therefore, the conclusion is that Demons should be allowed to return to the Cultivation World. There's no reason to stay in the Northern Desolation. The only reason you can't go back is the mindset passed down over millennia."

"The belief that Demons belong in the Northern Desolation, while it is humanity's duty to keep you out."

Does this sound like fallacy and heretical nonsense?

Perhaps not.

Lin Fan's argument carried a strange logic.

The Old Demon fell silent. He knew Lin Fan was talking nonsense, yet he couldn't help but feel the reasoning held some truth.

But the heart of the issue remained:

He loathed the Human Clan.

"What you say may be true, but I hate the Human Clan. Everything that happened was because of your kind. My family, my kin, all were slaughtered by Humans," the Old Demon said.

Overcome by fury,

an ancient aura erupted from him.

The Old Demon prepared to forcibly take over Lin Fan's body. The Demon's form could not enter the Cultivation World, but with a Human vessel, he could become the scourge of humanity.

At that moment, a glimmer of light gleamed from Lin Fan's body, shielding him from the demonic aura.

"I understand your anger. Humans, Demons, and the Demon Clan are no different—they are innocent at birth. What they grow into depends on their environment."

"If you gave me the vilest, most savage Demon hatchling, I could raise it into a Saint, because I have a kind heart."

"Conversely, if I gave you a Saint's child, under your influence, it would become like you: a being consumed with bitterness and hatred for humanity."

"Simply put, this is a battle between the Demon and Human Clans."

"From a deeper perspective, though, all beings are merely pawns of the Heavenly Dao. Our lives and fates are manipulated, pulled by unseen strings. We are all puppets, following a predestined path."

"With your cultivation and wisdom, Senior, surely you can sense this."

Lin Fan appeared calm and unrushed as he spoke. Whether or not his words made sense, he knew one thing—they could give his opponent pause.

This was just another technique, attributing everything to the Heavenly Dao's control.

Otherwise, how would anyone defy destiny?

The Heavenly Dao: "Don't slander me. I've never done such things."

The Old Demon stared intently at Lin Fan, remaining silent for a long time. He seemed lost in thought, perhaps pondering some profound questions.

"I want to make a wager with you. Do you dare?" the Old Demon finally said.

Lin Fan raised an eyebrow. "What kind of wager, Senior?"

"It's simple. I'll give you the most wicked, bloodthirsty Demon among us. You'll have twenty years. If you can reform them, I'll concede defeat."

"But if you fail, then you lose."

The Old Demon's eyes bore into Lin Fan, awaiting his response.

Lin Fan thought for a moment before asking, "What's at stake?"

"No stakes. I simply want to see if your words hold any truth. Do you dare?" the Old Demon replied.

Lin Fan smiled and said, "Why not? All beings are good at heart. While I know you have ulterior motives, I'm willing to accept the challenge."

"Hahaha... laughable, absolutely laughable. The world has Yin and Yang, good and evil. These are unchanging truths. You Human Cultivators spout such arrogance—I want to see just what you're capable of," the Old Demon laughed heartily.

Soon after, an egg drifted toward them from the distance.

As the egg drew closer, the air turned increasingly sinister. The egg's surface exuded an aura of uncontrollable violence.

Within it dwelled a monstrous evil of untold ferocity.

Lin Fan finally understood why the Old Demon was so confident. This wasn't just evil—it was pure malice incarnate.

A true source of destruction.

This… was going to be difficult.
