Chapter 0311: I Am Willing to Sacrifice Everything
Lin Fan contemplated.
Who exactly was this person, and what was their purpose?
If they wanted to make a move against him, there was no need for such nonsense. They could have just acted directly.
Or perhaps it was inconvenient for them to act now, and they were plotting something—ready to weave a tale, lure him into a trap, and then hit him hard.
Looks like he needed to be cautious.
The hearts of people these days were treacherous, let alone demons, who were terrifyingly sinister.
Lin Fan didn't believe a single punctuation mark from the unknown entity's words. Reaching this level of cultivation and battling four Demon Emperors to turn the heavens and earth upside down, yet claiming they didn't dare kill even a chicken?
Who would believe that?
Unless their brain was broken.
"Senior, let's cut the pleasantries. I'm not the sharpest tool, and I don't understand these convoluted games. Let's speak plainly." Lin Fan got straight to the point. He was on edge. Though the other party hadn't done anything to him yet, who knew what might happen next?
So.
Saying things clearly.
Would be good for everyone.
Save everyone the trouble.
"Do you know where this is?"
"I don't. I humbly ask Senior to enlighten me."
Lin Fan complained inwardly. How was he supposed to know where this was? If you don't say, do you just want me to guess?
He was highly wary of this being showing only a face.
Always ready to counterattack.
If necessary, he'd rather detonate the Mixed Element Golden Gourd and break out of here. No matter if this place was a void or domain, he was confident he could escape using the power of an Immortal Treasure.
For now, though, it hadn't come to that.
Then, the unknown entity's voice suddenly took on a sorrowful tone.
"This was once a corner of the Northern Desolation, surrounded by mountains, lush with green trees, beautiful scenery. But as certain unstoppable events occurred, it became the desolate Northern Desolation you see now."
Lin Fan sighed. "What a pity."
For now, he had to go along with whatever the other party said.
The strategy was: say whatever you want, I won't challenge it. Even if you say you're a pig, I'll wholeheartedly agree.
"Aren't you curious about how the once-beautiful Northern Desolation became like this?" the unknown entity asked.
Lin Fan replied, "I implore Senior to explain why this is so."
"Ah!" the unknown entity sighed deeply, the sound seeming to echo from some ancient time, "It was unavoidable, truly unavoidable."
"Indeed, unavoidable. If it were avoidable, with Senior's powers, I'm sure you would've stopped it. Junior deeply sympathizes," Lin Fan said.
At the same time, he scanned the surroundings, searching for clues.
If he could locate the entity's true form, he'd know his next move.
Unfortunately.
The surrounding space-time was odd, as if it both truly existed and was an illusion—a domain carved out by some ancient powerhouse.
"Although I've been here for a long time, I understand the conflict between demons and the Human Clan spans tens of thousands of years. I wish I could change it, but it's beyond my strength. The discord between the two sides is not so easily resolved, don't you think so?" the unknown entity said slowly.
Lin Fan nodded solemnly. "Senior speaks wisely. I believe if anyone could resolve this, it would undoubtedly be Senior."
But deep down, he was in a rush.
Just what was the other party's game?
It couldn't be for nothing that they were saying all these words.
Surely they were building up to something.
But Lin Fan wasn't flustered; he was prepared. How could he be outsmarted? That would simply underestimate his reputation as "Young Master Clever."
"Ah!"
The unknown entity let out another long sigh, laden with melancholy, as if their strength had no outlet or form of expression.
"Truly, if I could act, striving for peaceful coexistence between demons and humans, perhaps I could change something. But now, as I am, powerless," they said.
The usual script here would have Lin Fan naively ask: "Senior, why is that so? Could I help you in some way?"
But he wasn't going to fall into that trap.
Having figured out the pattern, if he still fell for it willingly, then his intelligence would truly be questionable.
Lin Fan, in a serious tone, declared, "Senior, rest assured. This junior understands your wishes. I am willing to take up your burden and work tirelessly for peace between the demons and the Human Clan."
"Even if it means braving fire and torrent, I won't hesitate."
He didn't dare bring up things like sacrificing his life. That wasn't his job to mention.
One must remain humble.
From the other party's tone, it felt like everything they said was designed to lead him into a trap.
"You…" The unknown entity looked stunned, then laughed. "That's a monumental task. I fear you…"
Before they could finish speaking, Lin Fan interrupted.
"Senior, please don't worry. I already have plans in mind. Indeed, the discord between demons and the Human Clan runs deep. But I firmly believe that with persistence, even metal can be ground into a needle. Once I leave here, I will marry a woman from the Human Clan and a beautiful demon. They will bear children together, and those children will live together in harmony."
"With my constitution and abilities, in less than three hundred years, my descendants will grow to an unimaginably massive number. Establishing a new race wouldn't be a problem."
"I am determined and confident. For the sake of world peace, I can even accept demons with open arms."
Lin Fan delivered this speech with righteousness and grandeur, as if it were all true, and successfully left the unknown entity utterly dumbfounded.
For a long time, they had no response.
Perhaps it was their first time encountering someone like Lin Fan.
The face conjured by the unknown entity showed no expression, but if it could display emotions, it would surely look utterly befuddled—this was not what they had in mind.
It felt like the conversation had been inexplicably derailed.
This wasn't what they wanted.
"You… this idea of yours is indeed a bit… but for you, it might not be so simple," the unknown entity said hesitantly, as if their mind were working overtime to think of something to say, but for the moment, they had nothing. It was awkward.
Lin Fan's expression turned serious, and he nodded thoughtfully. "Indeed, what Senior says makes sense. Yet I believe that where there's a will, there's a way! Nothing is impossible if one strives hard. I'm confident of my success!"
"Senior, you needn't worry about my health. My mana is profound, and my essence is abundant and of high quality. Producing tens of thousands of offspring is within my capacity."
"For the peace of the two races, I am willing to sacrifice everything."
He straightened his back, brimming with energy, his eyes gleaming with determination, and cupped his fists.
"Senior, there's a blazing fire in my heart, and it's about to explode with power. Please allow me to leave now, so I may contribute to the future of both clans."
Now, all he wanted was to get out of here.
God knows what this being was up to.
Surely, there had to be some sinister plan in motion.
The unknown entity fell silent, feeling that this human cultivator was rather remarkable—remarkable in a way that made their scalp tingle. It was almost unbearable.
Then, they slowly spoke: "Don't you think our conversation has strayed a bit?"
"Has it? Senior, I don't think so. Before meeting you, I might've misunderstood demons, but after meeting you, I've suddenly realized so many things. Please rest assured, I know what I must do," Lin Fan said.
For now, he had to play dumb.
Listen carefully to the other party's words.
It was nothing but one pitfall after another.
Good thing he was sharp and didn't let the other lead him by the nose.
He already had the other party figured out.
Either they let him go.
Or this was some ploy to seize his body.
The first option seemed unlikely. If the other could bring him here, they could easily summon other demons. Why would they need him? Possessing his body seemed more plausible.
The reasoning was simple.
Analyzing the two scenarios together, he deduced that when the demon passage appeared at Kunyu Mountain and was later sealed, there was a subsequent Demon Pit in the mortal realm.
And they were capturing mortals.
He had every reason to believe the unknown entity was searching for a perfect vessel for possession.
Mortals without exceptional talent wouldn't catch their eye.
Only through slow selection from among many options.
So.
He was already vaguely deducing the other party's aim.
Nonetheless, he refrained from asking directly. His priority was getting out of here. Who knew where this entity had brought him? The whole situation felt utterly baffling.
Totally bizarre.
"You don't understand. There are things you don't comprehend. Today, the demons don't want to harm anyone; instead, you must realize that the place you live now was once our homeland," the unknown entity said.
"Your aspirations are grand, noble. I believe you will succeed. But one person's strength is, in the end, minuscule."
"I think I can help you."
The unknown entity spoke slowly, their intentions becoming increasingly overt. Anyone who wasn't completely dense could pick up on the underlying message.
For Lin Fan.
Was this the moment where the charade dropped, and things became unabashedly direct?
The thought made his nerves tense.
Lin Fan didn't want to break things off with the entity yet. After all, they hadn't issued any threats, and he had time to guide the conversation.
He once again wore a serious expression and said, "Senior, while it's true that one individual's power is limited, I have faith in myself. I am absolutely confident in accomplishing this challenging mission."
"The harsh conditions demons endure in the Northern Desolation are indeed tied to the Human Clan. Thus, I am willing to bear the burden alone, so that Senior need not exhaust yourself."
What he said was impeccable.
And it came with an air of traditional respect for elders.
Considering this unknown entity had likely lived an exceedingly long time—at least ten thousand years—showing respect for one's elders was entirely appropriate.
Suddenly, he had an epiphany.
This wasn't cowardice.
It was basic respect for the elderly.
Gradually.
The unknown entity fell silent, seemingly rendered speechless by Lin Fan's words. It was as though they'd been utterly disarmed and didn't know what to say anymore.
Maybe they'd never anticipated.
That this human cultivator would dodge every trap they laid.
Was it intentional, or simply unintentional?
Had he already detected that something was off?
But that couldn't be. The unknown entity hadn't shown their hand, their tone was gentle, devoid of hostility, and they hadn't exuded killing intent.
