Chapter 21: Consequences
As Beatrice walked out of the school, she felt a sense of accomplishment and relief. She had survived her first day as a teacher, and it had been a success. She was looking forward to going home and relaxing, maybe taking a nap or reading a book.
But as she walked down the street, her phone rang. She sighed and answered it, knowing that it was probably her mother.
"Hey, Mom," Beatrice said, trying to sound cheerful.
"Beatrice, I need you to do something for me," her mother said, without even saying hello.
"What is it, Mom?" Beatrice asked, already feeling a sense of dread.
"I need you to go to the bank and get a deposit for me," her mother said. "I don't have time to do it myself, and I need it done today."
Beatrice sighed and rubbed her temples. She was tired and pregnant, and the last thing she wanted to do was go to the bank.
"Mom, I'm tired and pregnant," Beatrice said, trying to reason with her mother. "Can't it wait until tomorrow?"
"No, it can't wait," her mother said, scolding her. "You need to do it today. Now, stop complaining and just do it."
Beatrice felt a surge of anger and frustration, but she knew better than to argue with her mother. She sighed and agreed to do it, feeling like she was being taken advantage of.
Meanwhile, Ethan and his gang were in the middle of a successful heist. They had broken into a jewelry store and were making off with thousands of dollars' worth of diamonds and gold.
"Yes!" Ethan exclaimed, as they made their escape. "We did it! We're rich!"
But as they ran down the street, they heard the sound of sirens behind them. They turned to see a group of police cars pulling up, blocking their escape route.
"Ah, no," Ethan said, feeling a surge of panic. "We've been caught."
But Ethan's gang was not one to give up easily. They quickly assessed the situation and realized that they outnumbered the police.
"Let's take them down," one of Ethan's gang members said, pulling out a gun.
Ethan nodded, and the two groups faced off in the middle of the street. The police officers, realizing that they were outnumbered, called for backup.
But Ethan's gang was not going to wait around for reinforcements to arrive. They opened fire on the police, and a fierce shootout ensued.
Beatrice, who was walking down the street, heard the sound of gunfire and quickly ducked into a nearby alleyway. She peeked around the corner, watching in horror as the shootout continued.
"Oh my god," she whispered to herself. "What is happening?"
The shootout continued for several minutes, with neither side giving an inch. But Ethan's gang had the upper hand, and they slowly began to push the police back.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the police retreated, leaving Ethan's gang to make their escape.
As they ran down the street, Ethan turned to his gang and grinned. "We did it!" he exclaimed. "We got away!"
The gang cheered, and they quickly disappeared into the crowded streets of the city.
Beatrice, who was still watching from the alleyway, couldn't believe what she had just seen. She had never witnessed a shootout before, and she was shaken by the experience.
As Beatrice was about to leave the alleyway, she heard a loud bang behind her. She turned around to see Ethan's gang member falling to the ground, and Ethan himself turning around in shock.
But before Beatrice could process what was happening, she felt a searing pain in her side. She looked down to see blood spreading across her shirt, and she knew she had been shot.
Ethan's eyes widened in horror as he saw Beatrice fall to the ground. "No!" he shouted, running towards her. "Beatrice, no!"
But it was too late. Ethan's gang member had already grabbed him and was pulling him away. "We have to get out of here, now!" he shouted.
Ethan hesitated for a moment, looking back at Beatrice's prone form. But his gang member's words snapped him back to reality, and he quickly followed him as they escaped into the crowded streets.
As they ran, Ethan's mind was racing with thoughts of Beatrice. He couldn't believe what had just happened. He had never meant for her to get hurt.
When they finally reached a safe distance, Ethan quickly redressed his wounds and turned to his gang member. "I have to go back," he said, his voice firm. "I have to make sure Beatrice is okay."
His gang member looked at him in surprise. "Are you crazy?" he asked. "The police are going to be all over that area. You'll get caught for sure."
But Ethan didn't care. He had to know that Beatrice was safe. He quickly made his way back to the alleyway, his heart pounding in his chest.
When he arrived, he saw the paramedics just arriving on the scene. He quickly followed them as they loaded Beatrice into the ambulance.
"Is she going to be okay?" Ethan asked one of the paramedics, his voice shaking with worry.
The paramedic looked at him sympathetically. "We'll do everything we can," he said. "But we need to get her to the hospital as quickly as possible."
Ethan nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. As Ethan followed the ambulance to the hospital, his mind was racing with thoughts of Beatrice and the baby. He couldn't believe what had just happened. He had never meant for her to get hurt.
When they arrived at the hospital, Ethan quickly jumped out of the ambulance and followed the paramedics as they rushed Beatrice into the emergency room. He paced back and forth in the waiting room, his mind racing with worry.
As he waited, Ethan couldn't help but think about how he had managed to keep his identity hidden. He had worn a different attire and fake tattoos during the heist, making it impossible for anyone to recognize him. He had always been careful to cover his tracks, but he had never expected things to go this far.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, a doctor came out to speak to him. "I'm afraid she's not stable," the doctor said, his expression serious. "The bullet wound is more severe than we initially thought, and we're having trouble stabilizing her blood pressure."
Ethan's heart sank as he listened to the doctor's words. He had been so relieved when he thought Beatrice was going to be okay, but now it seemed like she and the baby were in grave danger.
"What about the baby?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking with worry.
The doctor's expression turned even more serious. "We're doing everything we can to save the baby, but it's not looking good. The bullet wound has caused significant trauma to the uterus, and we're having trouble detecting a fetal heartbeat."
Ethan felt like he had been punched in the gut. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had never meant for things to go this far.
"What can I do?" Ethan asked, feeling helpless.
The doctor shook his head. "There's nothing you can do right now. We're doing everything we can to save Beatrice and the baby. All we can do is wait and hope for the best."
Ethan nodded, feeling a sense of despair wash over him. He had never felt so helpless in his life. He could only stand by and watch as the doctors and nurses fought to save Beatrice and the baby.
As he waited, Ethan couldn't help but think about the consequences of his actions. He had always known that his life of crime was risky, but he had never expected things to go this far. He had put innocent people in harm's way, and now they were paying the price.
Ethan's mind was filled with thoughts of regret and guilt as he waited for news about Beatrice and the baby. He knew that he would never be able to forgive himself if anything happened to them.
