Chapter 52: Not is Little the Shadow of Primarch’s Daughter
"..My Lord, the boy did what he did, but when we stopped him, he was ready to kill us all — it's not a small matter that we can just forget about," Elder Tamun said.
"It is a crime," Hanzo said. "The young girl did what she had to do, afraid for her life and honor. Perhaps Lord Cedric will see it that way."
The eyes of the two Barons became sharp at the mention of the Earl. Auren could see the son of the Baronlord seated to the side with two more boys and a girl — near his age and slightly older. The brat looked much calmer now compared to yesterday. The young offspring of the two barons were talking among themselves while stealing glances their way.
"Careful now!" Baron Lord Wallace Thornfield said, with quite a tone in his voice. "Involving our Lord in this small thing is not going to be so beneficial for you lot. Don't think for a second you can get clever with us. The Earl will not stay here forever — afterwards it is still us who your Lords are. It is Baron Thornmarch's land, and only he gets a say in it."
"Of course, of course," the big-bellied noble lord covered in leather armor said, while playing with his beard. "If Dante was here, it wouldn't come to this. But now that it has — we can sort it out amongst ourselves without troubling the Earl's good mood. The young Thornfield made a mistake in the passion of youth — no one is denying that, but nothing has happened here. If anything, it is the knight of Lord Thornfield who lost a hand. Both sides have done things that can't be ignored. My judgment is that Lord Thornfield will have to give the girl's family some 20 gold for her troubles, and that should be enough."

"Oh! So this is the young swordsman troubling my knights?" the Baronlord exclaimed in mock amusement, seeing him come near and stand beside the Elders and Hanzo.
"Yes, Goken, right?" Baron Thornmarch asked. "Dante sure has taught you some moves."
"It's Auren Goatshield, my lord," Auren said, with barely any emotion in his voice. "And no, it is not a small matter. I defended the land under our family's protection and did not strike first — my actions are not wrong by law. Whereas young Lord Thornfield here was forcing himself on a girl barely 9 years old. 20 gold? Is this the price of forcing little girls these days? That is your judgment?"
"Auren, don't!" Hanzo tried to stop him midway through, but Auren ignored him.
"Too much, little Goat. You have said too much.. Did your father forget to teach you manners along with the sword?" Baron Thornmarch's knight standing beside him spoke up. The Baron himself was glaring at him with eyes like an angry shopkeeper.
"Enough!" The Baronlord stood up, towering above Auren, the five Elders, and Hanzo. "A son of a knight dares to confront the very lord his father has sworn to protect and serve? Your young age will not be an excuse for this insolence!"
The Elders and Hanzo moved near Auren. Sable also ran from afar and stopped beside him — trying to hide him behind her as she faced the two angry Barons.
"He doesn't understand. The girl is his close friend — he is a child, my lord. His emotions are all over the place.." Sable said to the two Barons.
Baron Thornmarch also stood up, shaking his head. "If you knew that, then you should have kept him away from here, woman. The boy thinks he is his father, but he is gravely mistaken. Dante was not this arrogant! And stupid! Someone has to remind him what the consequences of ignorance are.."
The raised voices drew the attention of all the soldiers and knights in the camp. The daughter of their Lord also followed behind Sable. The group of young lords and ladies also noticed the heated exchange and closed in to see what was going on.
Auren gritted his teeth. He and his goddamn repressed emotions. He should never forget — to all these knights and lords, their fragile ego was the most important thing in the world. The way they were treating such a serious issue just made his blood boil. Stupid thing to do without Dante present here.
If he was alone, he wouldn't care about it much, but with Sable and his new family sharing the blame along with him.. Auren would never be able to forgive himself if something happened to them before Dante came back.
"What is going on here?" Auren heard a young, childish voice from the side.
It was the young girl listening to Sable and the Baron's daughter talking before. He had assumed her to be the Baron's younger daughter or Thornfield's daughter, but maybe she was more than that.
"Lady Althea, this is a small matter, nothing of interest for a young lady — maybe Petricia can show you around the village?" Thornmarch said. The change in his temperament was near instant. The smiling fat face looked very unsightly.
"I heard everything from Lady Sable. Perhaps this is indeed something only my father can make a judgment on?" the little lady said, with not a hint of fear or hesitation on her face.
"Oh no, my lady, these villagers are blowing things out of proportion in hopes of getting a little more coins from us. They forget sometimes that being a noble still means something, even if they live at the very edge of our land," the Baron replied.
"Don't downplay it. The Baronlord's son is indeed at fault here. Or maybe things are different in the region of Greenvale compared to Primarch Hold? The Emperor's law doesn't matter much here?" the little Lady Althea said, staring at the two Barons.
Auren blinked twice, looking at the scene before him. The girl was barely 11 years old. But what fucking guts! Now that was what he would expect from a daughter of an Earl. Still, it was a surprise seeing such a young girl talk like a proper lady of the court.
This could be their chance!
