Chapter 24: Rescue
Everyone woke up with the sun.
William and Min-jun got up even earlier to meditate and prepare themselves.
Then, within half an hour, everyone ate their meals and got ready at the vehicles.
This time, it will be a very serious operation, so Joseph also joined.
The management of the shelter was left to Ed.
William was in the second truck. Most of the truck beds were empty, and they took with them plenty of ammunition and people who could fight in order to include the new people they were going to rescue.
All of the drivers were soldiers. The others were there to hunt down any zombies they saw on the road.
The journey took an hour.
Hundreds of zombies served as decorative bushes along the road that this convoy passed through.
After an hour, they had to stop eight miles away from the police station because they were in the northwest of the city. The zombie population was still very high, and the roads were filled with crashed vehicles.
William jumped out of the car as planned and ran forward.
William would play the leading role, finding the police station, surveying the area, and reporting any hidden dangers.
As soon as William moved, the two teams led by Joseph immediately began to advance. Joseph had planned a sudden attack here.
Marcus, Eliza, and Joseph would go ahead, clearing the way as much as possible, while the others would provide supporting fire from the sides. The goal was to move forward quickly, like an arrowhead, and reach the intended target.
William climbed to the top of a tall building and looked around. The western part of the city was literally swarming with zombies, but he couldn't see any high-level zombies. This boosted his confidence.
If he continued at this pace, he would soon be at level nine and on the same level as Marcus.
After running a few more miles, he saw a huge police station. Dozens of tents were set up in the yard, and people in dirty clothes were just sitting and waiting. A large cauldron had been set up in the middle of the yard, and food was being cooked.
William climbed to the top of a tall building again, surveyed the area, and pulled a radio from his waist.
"This is Rescuer 1, this is Rescuer 1, can anyone hear me?"
"Rescuer 1, this is the police station. We can hear you."
Upon hearing this, William nodded and saw a bald, potbellied police officer emerge from the police station. His uniform was as clean as it had been on the first day.
"Police station. Prepare the people and line them up. We're coming." William turned and looked behind him. He saw Joseph and his team approaching from the main street. Then, hundreds more zombies followed behind them.
"General, there's a crowd gathering behind you."
"Understood, we'll slow down a bit. Clear the way."
William nodded at the order and descended from the building.
Joseph and the others would already be delayed, so he aimed to clear all the easy targets and level up.
Today, William wasn't going to hold back.
He rushed forward, using all his speed, strength, and abilities.
He began to blow through the streets like a wind. Every zombie he passed found itself on the ground, its head split in two or with something stuck in it, without even noticing anything.
William had no trouble killing two fifth-level zombies. His abilities were so well suited to him that even fifth-level zombies couldn't react.
William finally reached the ninth level.
He had given his previous system points to strength, but this time he chose to give them to speed.
William was addicted to the feeling in his body after the stats were distributed.
He felt so fast that he couldn't stand still, he was fidgeting.
William soon found himself at the door of the large police station.
William jumped and leaped over the door and entered.
William hadn't felt bad in a long time, except for today.
When he looked up, he saw people looking at him.
William was smiling, happy, joyful. He was excited about what time would bring, but he wasn't ready for it.
Life wasn't the same for everyone, it wasn't fair.
He saw the helplessness of the people here.
He saw the police distributing very little food to the people, who didn't eat it themselves but fed it to their children.
Everyone was as weak as possible. Because they were cornered.
Not everyone was like William and Joseph's group. They didn't know how to fight, they didn't dare.
They were afraid and couldn't overcome that fear.
At that moment, William was flooded with dozens of different emotions. His body was screaming for help, but the rational part of his brain whispered that these people needed to change.
William had changed. He had become braver and more determined.
So what were these people doing here?
They may have had a city full of supplies in front of them, but only a few police officers were level 3 or higher.
As William was lost in these thoughts, he didn't notice the overweight police officer approaching him.
But when the overweight police officer touched his shoulder, he noticed.
Then he turned his head and looked. "Why is this man so overweight?" he thought.
But he didn't judge him right away. Something had happened to everyone, and he hoped that this man had been less fat two weeks ago.
William didn't talk to the fat man at all. He didn't even hear what the man said.
Finally, he just nodded and jumped back over the door.
He reached out and took the radio from his waist.
"This is William, the road is safe, you can come faster." William then put the radio back on his belt.
Ten minutes after talking on the radio, William saw the group led by Marcus, Joseph, and Eliza.
They were walking at a normal pace, as if they were out for a walk.
When Joseph arrived, William gave him a slight nod and followed him, walking behind him.
The large gate of the police station was immediately secured. Edmond was left in charge of the team.
William, Joseph, Marcus, Eliza, and a few others went inside.
Joseph's mood was worse than William's.
"Start evacuating the people," he said.
Hearing this, Eliza immediately made an announcement and got the people to line up in pairs.
Then, taking a few third-level police officers with her, she began to evacuate the people.
They would go in groups of thirty. Edmond sent two-thirds of his team with Eliza. The vehicles also needed protection.
Joseph then requested that everything of value inside the building be removed and packed to be loaded onto the single truck they would bring later.
Min-jun, Jason, Mick, and finally Elias took on this task.
No police officer objected to them, and everyone was already rushing to squeeze their personal belongings into small bags.
William checked the survivors at the door and confirmed that there was no problem.
"BAM!" At that moment, a gunshot rang out, followed by the frightened but silent screams of the people. No one dared to make a sound, afraid that the zombies would be attracted by the noise, despite the scene before their eyes.
William turned his head and looked. He saw smoke still coming from the barrel of Marcus's gun.
William's eyes followed the gun's target.
It was the fat police officer. There was a hole in the middle of his forehead.
William then turned his head and saw Min-Jun and Jason carrying large bags of food and ammunition, and Mick and Elias behind them, their hands also full.
It wasn't hard to connect the dots.
What had first come to his mind but which he hadn't dared to say or do, Marcus had done.
William had never killed a person; he hadn't even considered it.
But he felt relieved.
The cause of that man's death proved the existence of his sense of justice.
William saw that several policemen were angry at their chief's death and reached for their guns, but they had underestimated the training of these professional soldiers.
There were no young or inexperienced soldiers among them. The youngest was thirty years old. Energy crisis issues were severe before the disaster, and these soldiers had gained sufficient experience in many colonial countries as a result.
William drew his sword, not to kill but to defend himself.
Fortunately, it wasn't necessary. Marcus's hand was faster than three police officers.
"BAM! BAM! BAM!" Three more men in police uniforms fell to the ground with holes in their foreheads.
Then the others dropped their weapons and raised their hands. Eliza calmed the frightened people when she heard the gunshots.
William also smiled and said a few words.
After that, everything became very easy.
The adult men who still had strength helped carry supplies and ammunition.
The police took off their uniforms and put on ordinary T-shirts.
Joseph wanted to make one thing clear: he was in complete control.
That was how it should be. In times of disaster, the best form of government was a consultative dictatorship.
Plans were discussed, and in the end, one person made the decision.
That was exactly the situation now. Quick and appropriate decisions had to be made, so Joseph chose the most logical course of action.
Moreover, they still had not been able to communicate through official government channels.
The ley energy had weakened the radio signals.
That day, it took until almost evening to transport all the survivors because there weren't enough vehicles.
They could only transport them in two trips.
Finally, William, Marcus, Mick, Min-Jun, and Jason searched the surrounding houses and buildings and took everything that was useful.
The movement of the vehicles and the sound of gunfire naturally attracted a lot of attention, and thousands of zombies followed the convoy.
Joseph ordered the killing of high-level zombies, and while some were killed with rifles, William killed two Level 5 zombies.
The remaining low-level zombies were deliberately left behind, slowly following the group along the main road.
This is where the second plan came into play.
As soon as the people were moved to the shelter, Joseph gave orders to everyone. All the warriors met these zombies and began a massacre.
Thousands of zombies died that day, and many people leveled up.
Only Marcus and William remained at level nine.
William deliberately chose to slow down here.
He had learned many new abilities related to weapons, and he needed to understand and improve them. Moreover, William's killing speed could not keep up with the machine guns of the others.
William mostly killed the relatively high-level zombies that appeared occasionally.
After the zombies were cleared and the road was reopened with muscle power, the people were placed in the shelter.
That night, everyone went to bed with full stomachs and peace of mind, except for Joseph.
Joseph thought about it all night long. Yes, they had enough supplies, but how much? There were now more than two hundred of them, including over a hundred adult men.
It wasn't easy to feed them all, so plans had to be implemented and action taken as soon as possible.
Before building houses, they had to harvest safely. By the time Joseph finished his plan, it was morning.
According to his plan, the priority was to find as many generators and fuel as possible. Then, finish the harvest and protect it, followed by the houses and the safe zone.
With the first light of dawn, Joseph went outside and began implementing the plan.
A few exhausting weeks lay ahead for the survivors in the shelter.
