Chapter 17: TST [17]
"Students, I must now announce a very serious incident."
"Last night, a teacher on patrol discovered that someone had secretly used the Duel Field for a Speed Duel!"
"Using Speed Duel facilities without permission is extremely dangerous. I hope all of you take this as a warning."
"The patrolling teacher was unable to catch the students involved and thus doesn't know their identities. However, I still hope those responsible will step forward and admit their mistake. The school will handle it with discretion."
On the podium, the principal—his head shining bald with a ring of hair circling the top like a Mediterranean fringe—was delivering a righteous lecture.
"Pffft!"
A muffled laugh came from the audience. The principal immediately shot a stern glare in that direction.
"You there! What's so funny? What's there to laugh at?!"
"I-I just remembered something happy..."
'Come on, if they don't know who it was, who'd be dumb enough to stand up and take the fall?'
That's what nearly every student was thinking, making the principal's attempt to test their moral integrity seem almost comedic.
"Oh? Something happy? Then come up here and share it with the class so everyone can be happy."
"No thanks, I'm good..."
Watching this farce unfold, Morgan let out a bored yawn.
After returning last night, she hadn't gone straight to sleep but instead pulled an all-nighter grinding ranked matches.
By dawn, she had finally ranked up to Platinum and earned a hefty amount of Duel Points, which she used to further refine her Underworld Deck.
Her Duel with Isla had exposed many issues—like its glaring lack of sustain and monster presence.
She had tweaked and optimized it.
But that also meant she was utterly exhausted this morning, running on no sleep.
Morgan had hoped to catch a nap during class, yet instead, the principal had dragged every student out early for this lesson on "integrity."
Of course, Morgan couldn't care less. All that righteous talk went in one ear and out the other.
Jade, on the other hand, looked like a nervous wreck.
After his long-winded appeal, the principal realized he was wasting his breath and finally shifted to the day's main topic.
"Students, as you all know, midterms are about to begin."
"This year, we are honored to welcome Haisen Club's ace pro duelist, Milo!"
"He will be attending the entire midterm exam session as a guest!"
"I hope everyone gives it their best. Leave a good impression—you might just join Haisen Club one day!"
At this announcement, the entire auditorium exploded in excitement.
Haisen was their hometown club in Solmere City and had taken second place in the league twice.
It was a point of pride for the locals.
Most students in the Middle Division idolized Haisen's duelists, especially Milo, known for his Volcanic Deck—a role model for many boys.
The news of Milo's visit had them ecstatic.
"Yes! I finally get to meet my idol!"
"If I could duel him even once, I could die happy!"
"What kind of qualifications do you need to join Haisen Club? Education level?"
"Yeah right! That stuff doesn't matter—they only care about your skills!"
Seeing how rowdy things were getting, the principal gave up on trying to say anything else and dismissed everyone.
Students filtered out in groups. Jade, still shaken, crept up to Morgan and whispered:
"Do you think the school will come after us?"
"Relax. If anyone's in trouble, it's me and Isla. You didn't even duel, remember?"
Morgan's words made Jade pause.
"Oh, right! I didn't duel... Wait, no! What if they find out about you? With your grades, they'd expel you for sure!"
Jade clutched Morgan's hand, flustered. Morgan was her best friend, and she didn't want to lose her.
But Morgan didn't mind. It wasn't like she was learning anything from school anyway… climbing the Virtual Duel ladder was far more fun.
"Anyway, what matters now is boosting our deck power! I heard the school store just stocked some new cards. Let's go strengthen our decks!"
"W-Wait... I want to sleep..."
Before Morgan could finish, Jade had already dragged her off toward the shop.
...
At the store, Morgan found it packed with students. Surely, plenty had the same idea.
Combined with the principal's announcement, everyone now wanted to shine during midterms.
Morgan forced herself awake and browsed a few booster packs.
To her surprise, she found some very handy tech cards for her build.
However, just as she was about to make the purchase, she realized something awkward…
She had no money.
She'd never asked Belle for pocket change and ranked matches didn't earn any cash. Right now, her wallet was empty.
At that moment, a familiar voice rang in her ear.
"Want that? Want me to buy it for you?"
Morgan turned around…and saw Isla looking at her shyly.
