Chapter 372: Synchro Summon
"But my monster still has higher Attack!"
Though he had Fusion Summoned a monster, Dark Paladin' 2900 Attack still exceeded that of Chimerafflesia.
"It doesn't matter. Entering the Battle Phase, Chimerafflesia attacks Dark Paladin, and activates its effect!"
"When this card declares an attack: Until the end of the turn, its Attack increases by 1000, and the opponent's monster loses 1000 Attack!"
[Dark Paladin, ATK: 2900 → 1900]
[Predaplant Chimerafflesia, ATK: 2500 → 3500]
"Wow, now its Attack surpasses Dark Paladin!"
"Brilliant! He fused with monsters alone and took down that Spell-locking Fusion monster!"
The Fusion Club members erupted in cheers.
Chimerafflesia wrapped Dark Paladin in vines, and moments later, the powerful Spellcaster was torn apart by brute force, reduced to sludge that sank into the cavern.
[Beastking of the Swamps, LP: 4000 → 2400]
"End of turn."
"Not bad," Mudragon murmured softly.
"However, that alone isn't enough."
"Fusionist of humanity, you certainly bypassed the need for Spell Cards, but how deep is your understanding of Fusion? Can you accept a more unorthodox form of Fusion?"
Dimitri couldn't help but ask, "What do you mean?"
Beside him, the Monster King shook his head.
Sometimes, even they couldn't decipher what the Dragon King was thinking.
"My turn. Draw."
Mudragon slapped the cavern floor, and a card shot out from the Deck into its hand.
"At this moment, Drawhand's effect activates. When sent to the Graveyard, during the next Standby Phase, it Special Summons itself. If it leaves the field again, it's banished.
When Special Summoned by a HERO effect, both players draw 1 card."
"A way to replenish Fusion materials? Heh."
Both players drew.
"Now then... if my opponent controls a monster, I can Special Summon this card from my hand."
"Is that Cyber Dragon?" a Fusion Club student guessed.
"No, Special Summon: Priest of the Sun."
Sunlight seemed to pierce through the cave ceiling as a man wielding a shaman's staff slowly emerged on the field.
Hikaru raised an eyebrow.
What the heck?
He was stunned.
Mudragon had once said it had traveled to various dimensions and seen Synchro duels, and Hikaru had assumed that just meant it was well-traveled, but this?
No…
After the initial surprise, Hikaru realized something. Though this was indeed Priest of the Sun, his body was also flowing with swampy sludge.
Was this simulated?
[Priest of the Sun] Level 5│LIGHT│Spellcaster│1000 ATK
"Next... Normal Summon: Baby Mudragon."
"Wahoo! Me me me!" A lively Baby Mudragon flew over and plopped onto the ground, curiously eyeing Amaki.
[Baby Mudragon] Level 1│DARK│Dragon│0 ATK
"Is it time?" Amaki stared at the little monster.
"Oh? You seem to know."
"That's right, I know. Anything Fusion-related, I know."
Even when facing Chaos Ruler for the first time, Hikaru had immediately understood it was a Fusion-type monster.
"Captain, what are you two talking about?" Dimitri asked, puzzled.
Tierra recalled seeing the card Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste earlier and suddenly had a hunch.
Could it be?
"Tuning Level 1 Baby Mudragon with Level 5 Priest of the Sun."
"Tuning?!"
"What??"
The entire Fusion Club gasped.
Even Baby Mudragon pointed at itself in confusion.
But as it struggled to understand, Mudragon had already raised its hand. Baby Mudragon vanished into the stands as a bright blue star rose in its place. Priest of the Sun's image turned translucent, becoming a blue ring that descended over the star.
"Synchro Summon."
"Level 6, Mudragon."
Mudragon split in two, and one of the forms now stood on the field, identical to itself.
[Mudragon] Level 6│DARK│Dragon│500 ATK
"Synchro?"
"What just happened?! A Synchro Summon?!"
"Wha-wha-wha-wha."
The cave erupted into chaos.
The Fusion Club members were shocked, but kept composed.
But the Duel Spirits in the room were thrown into disarray.
They were supposed to be a tribe devoted to Fusion, and yet now they discovered their own leader was a Synchro user?!
Moreover, for a Spirit to grasp Synchro Summoning wasn't simple. Just having a Synchro card wasn't enough. One had to master the concept of "Resonance" , something normal Spirits didn't understand.
And time spent mastering Resonance meant less time honing Fusion.
"Baby Mudragon's effect from the Graveyard: If sent there as Synchro Material, declare one Type or Attribute. Until the end of the turn, one Synchro Monster you control becomes the declared Type or Attribute.
I choose: Spellcaster."
Mudragon's doppelganger donned a mage's hat and gripped a staff, taking on the appearance of a powerful old sorcerer.
"You don't seem surprised."
"Nothing surprising about it," Hikaru said, shaking his head. "As long as the goal is Fusion, it doesn't matter if it comes from Xyz or Synchro.
For me, if it's Fusion, that's all that matters!"
Mudragon didn't respond immediately. Instead, it glanced toward the group behind Hikaru.
It was watching Dimitri and the others.
They, too, wore stunned expressions, caught completely off-guard. But while shocked, none of them doubted Hikaru. On the contrary, they looked as if everything now made sense.
Which meant… The human faction led by Hikaru had been familiar with his philosophy for quite some time. That was why they never questioned this possibility.
Mudragon couldn't help but feel emotional.
It was the third leader of this cavern.
That said, the path it took to become the third was far from smooth.
It had once traveled to a strange dimension, studying its dueling styles. There, it had seen many strange monsters and Spirits. Back then, it had wanted to merge that dimension's Summoning with its own tribe's Fusion, but its master never accepted it.
It trained hard, enduring many trials, and finally, just before the Spirit Dimension collapsed, claimed the position of leader through strength alone.
But it had never earned recognition for its ideals. In the end, it could only encourage its juniors not to be so narrow-minded, hoping that one day, someone would understand.
It had been a long time since it had a kindred spirit.
It had long since parted ways with its tribe. In this Critical Nexus Dimension, it had been alone for far, far too long.
"Interesting... Let me see if your words are just talk, or if you really have substance."
"I activate the Spell Card: Miracle Synchro Fusion!"
Mudragon raised the card high: "Behold, the culmination of my years of training!"
"Wha?!" The Spirits in the cavern cried out in amazement.
"Miracle Synchro Fusion?" the Fusion Club echoed in surprise.
"This card lets me banish specific Fusion Materials from the field and Graveyard to Fusion Summon a monster that uses a Synchro Monster as material!"
"I banish myself, my Spellcaster-type Synchro, and Priest of the Sun from the Graveyard!"
"Huh?!"
"A Fusion Spell that uses Synchro Monsters as material?!"
"This trip was worth it! We'd never see something like this without our Captain!"
Two phantoms rose from the ground, spinning wildly, before fusing into a form everyone had seen before.
A mage wielding a massive green staff slowly descended to the field.
"Fusion Summon! Level 10, Supreme Arcanite Magician!"
[Supreme Arcanite Magician] Level 10│LIGHT│Spellcaster│1400 ATK
"When this card is Fusion Summoned: Place 2 Spell Counters on it. It gains 1000 Attack for each Spell Counter."
[Spell Counters: 0 → 2]
[Supreme Arcanite Magician, ATK: 1400 → 3400]
