Chapter 9: Chapter 7.1 - Duel in the Flames of Perdition Part 1
Four days had passed since the unforgettable exhibition duel between Himejima Ryuki and Akaba Reiji, yet the echoes of that clash continued to ripple through Maiami City. The battle had not only shaken the competitive scene but had reignited the passion for dueling in countless hearts. Among the greatest beneficiaries of this momentum was none other than You Show Duel School.
Once a well known school that fell of due to Yusho's disappearance, You Show now stood on a precipice of transformation. For the past three days, applications poured in from duelists young and old—some eager to train under the same roof as Sakaki Yuya and Ryuki, others simply intrigued by the mysterious power of Pendulum Summoning. The line outside the school gates stretched around the block, an almost surreal sight for those who had once feared You Show's irrelevance.
Hiragi Shuzo, the school's principal and proud father, could hardly contain his emotions. Tears welled in his eyes as he gazed upon the ever-growing line of hopeful applicants. "I've dreamed of this moment," he sniffled, waving to passersby as if he were some sort of local celebrity. "Our school is finally getting the recognition it deserves!"
However, Ryuki stood behind him with his arms crossed, quietly observing. His eyes narrowed slightly. While many applicants bore genuine passion, he could sense that some were merely chasing the allure of Pendulum cards, hoping to ride the wave of popularity sparked by Yuya's recent duels.
"We can't accept just anyone," Ryuki advised calmly. "Some of these duelists might only be here for shortcuts or fame. We need a screening process."
Thus, an interview phase was introduced—one that evaluated not only dueling skill but also heart, motivation, and character. With the help of a rather unexpected volunteer, the process became more efficient: Sawatari Shingo.
To everyone's astonishment, Sawatari walked into You Show's front gates with none of his usual arrogance. Even more shocking was what came next—he bowed his head and apologized to Yuya and the others for his actions during their earlier encounters.
Yuya blinked in disbelief. "Sawatari... you're apologizing?"
Sawatari nodded solemnly. "I realized... after watching that duel between Ryuki and Reiji, that I've been flaunting my father's name like it's a shield. I've got talent, sure—but that's not enough. I want to stand on my own from now on."
Yuya smiled, extending a hand. "Then I'll be waiting for a real duel, Sawatari. No tricks. Just you."
Sawatari smirked and clasped his hand. "You've got it."
Though many students—including Yuzu—remained cautious about Sawatari's sudden change of heart, Ryuki watched from a distance with quiet approval. The road to growth is never instant, he thought. But if he's taken the first step, that's enough.
With Sawatari's surprising but effective assistance, You Show's applicant pool was refined. Out of hundreds, only seventeen were accepted, increasing the student body from a modest eight to a confident twenty-five. It wasn't just numbers that had grown—it was spirit.
Meanwhile, Yuya himself had blossomed under the spotlight. In just a matter of weeks, he had added Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz versions of his Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon to his arsenal. His repertoire grew so versatile that duelists from all around clamored to challenge him. His win rate, once below 50%, had risen to an impressive 73%, marking a sharp turn in his growth as a duelist.
On the other hand, Yuzu had started her own training arc under the guidance of Sora Shiun'in. When Ruri and Rin asked her why she chose Sora instead of Ryuki, she smiled softly.
"I know Ryuki would've been a great teacher," Yuzu admitted. "But he's been so busy lately, I didn't want to trouble him. And... I trust Sora. He's been helping without asking anything in return."
Ruri and Rin exchanged glances. Both were well aware of Sora's true allegiance to Academia—but seeing Yuzu's determination, they decided not to interfere. Everyone had their own path to walk. All they could do was keep watch... and be ready, if the time came.
As for Ruri and Rin themselves, their PSYqualia training under the watchful guidance of Chrono Dran and the Zodiac Time Beasts had advanced significantly. The psychic resonance once difficult to control had become more stable, and both girls were learning how to utilize its power without succumbing to exhaustion. Their potential was blooming into something formidable—powerful, but tempered by clarity.
And now, in the present, we return to You Show Duel School's newly upgraded training arena—its dimensions expanded, its durability enhanced, all thanks to a generous donation from Reiji and the Leo Duel School. A quiet but respectful gesture after the duel that reignited his flame.
The current battlefield was themed after a Wild West environment—dusty terrain, wooden buildings, and saloon-styled scenery. Though this was an Action Duel arena, both duelists had mutually agreed to forgo the use of Action Cards. This match was to be decided by card knowledge, deck synergy, and spirit alone.
Standing on opposite ends were Gongenzaka Noboru and Himejima Ryuki.
Spectators filled the observation platforms—Ruri and Rin stood side by side, watching intently, while Yuya leaned over the railing with Ayu, Futoshi, and Tatsuya all cheering from behind. Gongenzaka's father, a stoic but proud man clad in traditional garb, had come to witness the fruit of his son's training firsthand.
"This isn't just any match," Gongenzaka's father murmured. "This is the moment my son puts his soul into motion."
Gongenzaka raised his Duel Disk, eyes locked with Ryuki. "Thank you for accepting my challenge, Ryuki. As promised, no Action Cards—just true Dueling spirit."
Ryuki smiled. "Wouldn't have it any other way. I'm curious to see what you've learned from Yaiba."
With a nod, Gongenzaka drew his card.
Gongenzaka: 3500 | Hand: 3
Ryuki: 4000 | Hand: 2
Turn 3 - Gongenzaka
"My turn! Draw!" Gongenzaka's voice echoed across the arena, resolute and thunderous. Dust swirled at his feet as the atmosphere tensed. His eyes locked onto Ryuki's blazing titan—Dragonic Overlord—still standing proud and strong from its last turn.
For a moment, Gongenzaka stared at the towering flame-cloaked dragon, the remnants of its previous attack still smoldering in the air. He knew one wrong step could cost him everything. Had he not drawn a defensive counter in the prior turn, this duel might've ended then and there. But this time... this time, he was ready.
He cast a glance to the sidelines, where his father, proud and stern, stood among the crowd, arms folded. Then, back to Ryuki—his friend, his rival, and a duelist who had pushed him to surpass his limits.
"This is it," Gongenzaka muttered under his breath. "The path I've chosen—my own way of Steadfast Dueling."
He held up a card, announcing firmly, "When there are no Spells or Traps in my Graveyard, I can Special Summon the Tuner Monster—Superheavy Samurai Trumpeter—from my hand!"
A burst of rhythmic drumbeats shook the arena floor as the tiny, stout-bodied robot leapt onto the field, wielding a brass horn.
Superheavy Samurai Trumpeter
Level 2 / EARTH / Machine / Tuner / Effect
ATK: 300 / DEF: 600
"Wha—he's using a Tuner Monster?" Yuzu's eyes widened in surprise, barely believing her ears.
"No way! Is Gon-chan really going to Synchro Summon?" Sora said, his lollipop nearly slipping from his mouth.
Rin clenched her fists in excitement, "Yes! Another Synchro user in our ranks!"
Gongenzaka turned toward the crowd with pride before holding his Duel Disk forward, his voice rising. "I tune Level 2 Superheavy Samurai Trumpeter with my Level 8 Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei!"
Trumpeter blew its horn one final time as it transformed into two glowing rings of green energy. Big Benkei, like a mountain set in motion, leapt forward and passed through the rings, his frame glowing with mechanical might.
"Raging deity! In unison with the soul of a thousand blades, come forth in spiraling waves! Synchro Summon! Appear now, Level 10—Superheavy Samurai Warlord Susanowo!"
The wind howled as a massive silhouette descended in a flash of light. A towering samurai clad in intricate armor and wielding a colossal blade now stood in Benkei's place.
Superheavy Samurai Warlord Susanowo
Level 10 / EARTH / Machine / Synchro / Effect
ATK: 2400 / DEF: 3800
A wave of cheers rippled through the arena.
"You finally did it," Yuya grinned from the stands, fists pumping in celebration. "You finally pulled off a Synchro Summon, Gongenzaka!"
The younger You Show students erupted into applause. Even the stoic Gongenzaka Sr. cracked a smile. His son had reached a new height, one that transcended the traditions he once clung to. Not by abandoning Steadfast Dueling—but by redefining it.
Ryuki smiled as well, a warm spark of pride in his eyes. "Congratulations on your successful Synchro Summon, Gongenzaka," he said, standing tall beside his roaring dragon. "I think it's time we take it up a notch."
"I wouldn't have it any other way!" Gongenzaka shouted. "Before we battle, I activate Superheavy Samurai Soulhorns from my hand! I equip it to Susanowo! Now, he can attack twice during this Battle Phase!"
Ryuki's expression turned serious. He already saw it—if he couldn't stop this attack, it was over. One clean strike from Susanowo would reduce his Life Points from 4000 to 3200. The second hit? Game over.
"Battle!" Gongenzaka roared. "Susanowo, attack Dragonic Overlord! Kusanagi Slash!"
Susanowo lifted his giant blade and dashed forward in a thunderous charge. But Ryuki didn't flinch.
"Quick-Play Spell—Manta Style!" Ryuki countered, swiftly activating one of his facedown cards. "By halving my monster's ATK, I can negate one attack this turn!"
Dragonic Overlord split into three afterimages, each one darting in different directions. Susanowo's blade cut cleanly through the central illusion—but the true body was untouched.
Dragonic Overlord
ATK: 3000 → 1500
"Nice move," Gongenzaka nodded. "But your dragon won't survive the second strike!"
"Bring it on," Ryuki challenged.
"Second attack—Susanowo!" Gongenzaka called. The warlord roared again and cleaved downward with his blade. This time, the slash connected. Dragonic Overlord was struck down, its body engulfed in flame as it shattered into embers.
Ryuki gritted his teeth as a sharp wave of pain rippled through his Duel Disk and hit his side.
Ryuki: 4000 → 1700
"I'm not done yet!" Gongenzaka continued. "I activate Superheavy Samurai Bomberman from my hand! When a Superheavy Samurai destroys a monster, I can discard this card to deal 100 damage times the destroyed monster's Level!"
A stout robotic figure hurled eight tiny explosives across the field, each one glowing a fiery red.
Level 8 × 100 = 800 Damage
Ryuki: 1700 → 900
The mini blasts crackled as they hit Ryuki's field. The damage wasn't as heavy as the first strike, but it left scorch marks around him nonetheless. Smoke billowed, and Ryuki took a deep breath, wiping the sweat from his brow.
"Then I activate my Trap Card—Rebirth by Flame!" he declared. "If my Life Points are less than half of my opponent's, I can Special Summon Dragonic Overlord from my Graveyard!"
A pillar of fire erupted behind Ryuki as his signature dragon burst forth with a mighty roar, wings ablaze and body restored.
Dragonic Overlord
Level 8 / FIRE / Dragon / Fusion / Effect
ATK: 3000 / DEF: 2500
Ruri and Rin both exhaled in relief, clutching each other's hands.
"He really brought it back..." Ruri whispered, awe in her voice.
"He's still standing," Rin nodded.
Gongenzaka narrowed his eyes but showed no sign of disappointment. "You never fail to rise, Ryuki. That's why you're always one step ahead."
With a sharp nod, Gongenzaka ended his turn.
Gongenzaka: 3500 | Hand: 0
Ryuki: 900 | Hand: 2
The crowd remained dead silent for a moment, stunned by the back-and-forth clash. Then the tension broke into awe-filled murmurs and quiet applause from the students.
From the stands, Yuya clenched his fist, exhilarated. "He's still in it. Man, Ryuki never gives up."
Yuzu glanced at the dueling field, her gaze soft. "Even when his LP is hanging by a thread... he still finds a way to stand tall."
Meanwhile, Gongenzaka's father closed his eyes in reflection. "He's found it—his own path, forged through discipline and courage. You've done well, Noboru."
Back on the field, Ryuki's expression remained composed, but his heart beat faster than ever. The air shimmered with heat from his dragon's return.
"I won't lie," Ryuki said, raising his Duel Disk. "That was a brilliant turn. Your Synchro Summon was clean. Your combo with Bomberman was calculated. And your conviction?"
He looked at Gongenzaka with genuine respect. "Unshakable."
The flames around Dragonic Overlord flared once more as Ryuki drew his next card, eyes flashing with determination.
"Now," he said, "let's see how your new path holds up... against the heat of mine."
Turn 4 - Ryuki
"Atashi no turn! Draw!" Ryuki's voice rang out clear and unwavering, his hand sweeping through the air as he drew his next card. The moment his eyes glanced over it, a smile curled at the corners of his mouth. The path to victory had revealed itself—burning, radiant, and absolute.
"I discard two cards from my hand to activate the Spell Card—Overlord Fusion!"
A vortex of searing flame erupted behind Ryuki, his Dragonic Overlord responding with a mighty roar, its crimson scales reflecting the intensity of its duelist's spirit.
"With this card, I can Fusion Summon a 'Dragonic Overlord' Fusion Monster by using a Fusion Monster on my field, graveyard and Extra Deck—but the price is clear. Their ATK and DEF become zero if summoned this way!"
Flames spiraled from the Extra Deck as two shadowy figures emerged from the inferno.
"Come forth—Dragonic Overlord 'The X'! And Dragonic Overlord 'The Legend'!"
Twin infernal pillars exploded on either side of Dragonic Overlord. From within them, two menacing dragons emerged—one wreathed in scarlet flames with a piercing glare, the other armored in ancient regalia with a divine presence that seemed to command awe.
Dragonic Overlord "The Legend"
Level 10 / FIRE / Dragon / Fusion / Effect / Blaze
ATK: 3300 → 0 / DEF: 2700 → 0
Dragonic Overlord "The X"
Level 9 / FIRE / Dragon / Fusion / Effect / Blaze
ATK: 3100 → 0 / DEF: 2600 → 0
The entire crowd, from students to teachers, was left speechless. Even Yuya, whose eyes had seen countless duels, could barely find the words.
"They're... they're beautiful," Rin whispered, almost reverently.
"Just how many evolutions does that monster line even have?" Sora muttered, stunned.
Ryuki raised his hand toward his three dragons. "Now, Gongenzaka... I'll show you why I am called the Flame Monarch by Ruri and Rin. Witness the final judgment!"
As he spoke, the three dragons roared in unison, flames gathering and twisting into a spiraling portal above Ryuki.
"I fuse Dragonic Overlord, Dragonic Overlord 'The X', and Dragonic Overlord 'The Legend'!"
The dragons surged into the swirling gate of fire, their roars merging into a symphony of dominance. A brilliant scarlet light flooded the arena as Ryuki thrust his arm into the air.
"Through trial by flame, the heavens shall judge all! The emperor who incinerates sin descends! Fusion Summon! Rise—Level 12! Supreme Heavenly Emperor Dragon, Dragonic Overlord 'The Purge'!"
The light shattered into pieces as a colossal dragon emerged—scarlet scales forged in celestial fire, six blazing wings unfurling like a phoenix risen from judgement. Clad in golden armor etched with ancient runes, the dragon's four arms wielded massive blasters, each pulsing with unstable elemental energy. When it opened its eyes, the very windows of the Duel School trembled from its roar.
Supreme Heavenly Emperor Dragon, Dragonic Overlord "The Purge"
Level 12 / FIRE / Dragon / Fusion / Effect / Blaze
ATK: 5000 / DEF: 4000
Shuzo's jaw hung open. "Oh my god..."
Tatsuya and Futoshi's eyes sparkled like twin stars.
"What the hell is that thing?" Sora said, more excited than afraid.
"A monster with 5000 attack points...!" Yuzu murmured, barely able to stand upright.
But Ryuki wasn't done.
"Because 'The Purge' was Fusion Summoned while my LP is less than 1000, its skill activates! All monster effects are negated, and all Spells and Traps on the field are destroyed!"
Gongenzaka's eyes widened as a radiant pulse exploded from "The Purge," instantly incinerating Superheavy Samurai Warlord Susanowo in a brilliant flash of fire and light.
The massive Synchro warrior had its arms down as embers were lingering its body.
"I activate 'The Purge's' skill. Once per turn, if my LP is lower than my opponent, you take 1000 damage."
"The Purge's" eyes gleamed as Gongenzaka was engulfed in a pillar of flames. AS the flames dispersed, Gongenzaka was down on one knee and his clothes were scorched.
Gongenzaka: 3500 → 2500
"Let's end this. Battle! Dragonic Overlord 'The Purge', attack Susanowo—Burning Desperado!"
"The Purge" raised its cannons and let loose a barrage of devastating firepower. Gongenzaka barely had time to raise his arms to shield himself as a wave of explosions overtook his field, reducing his LP in an instant.
Gongenzaka: 2300 → 1200
As the smoke cleared, Gongenzaka still stood, breath ragged—but his eyes met Ryuki's, unwavering.
He thought it was over.
But then Ryuki's voice echoed once more, filled with resolve.
"I activate Dragonic Overlord "The Purge's" skill! Once per turn, for every 'Dragonic Overlord' Fusion Monster in my Graveyard, 'The Purge' can attack one additional time."
The words hit the audience like thunder. Silence fell across the field. Even Yuya's heart skipped a beat.
"That means... it can attack three times in total!" Tatsuya exclaimed.
Sora began shaking. "That's not a duel anymore—that's a goddamn war crime."
Gongenzaka didn't flinch. He straightened his posture, brushing dust from his shoulders and stood tall, arms outstretched.
"You fought with honor, Ryuki. I accept defeat. Strike me down with your flames."
Ryuki looked across the field and gave a solemn nod.
"Then receive the judgment of the Flame Monarch."
Without a word, "The Purge" took aim.
Its six wings ignited, each cannon glowing red-hot. The sky above seemed to bend to its heat. And then—fire.
Twin volleys erupted from its cannons, a relentless fusillade of flaming light. Gongenzaka braced himself as his Life Points were reduced to nothing in an overwhelming inferno.
Gongenzaka: 1200 → 0
Winner: Ryuki
-----
As the final attack faded and the arena calmed, "The Purge" let out one last victorious roar before dispersing into motes of flame. The crowd sat in stunned silence for a few moments before erupting into cheers.
Yuya was the first to clap, then Rin, and then the rest of the students followed in wild applause.
"That was... phenomenal," Rin said, breathless.
"Monstrous," Sora admitted, tossing his lollipop away. "But... damn cool."
Even Gongenzaka's father could be seen nodding, hands behind his back, a proud smile on his face.
The bright projection of the duel field finally faded into embers as the system powered down, signaling the official end of the duel. Applause erupted from the You Show Duel School students as Ryuki and Gongenzaka stood in the center of the field, gripping each other's hand with strength and mutual respect.
"That was an incredible duel!" Yuya cheered from the crowd, quickly joined by Yuzu and the others. "You guys were amazing!"
"You burned through his defense like nothing, Ryuki!" Sora added, offering a half-smirk. "That last Fusion Monster? I'm calling dibs on watching that again on repeat."
Gongenzaka simply offered his usual firm nod, his heavy footsteps echoing as he stepped down from the platform. Ryuki followed, greeted immediately by Rin and Ruri with bright smiles.
"You were awesome out there," Rin said with a grin. "But you owe me another match. I want to see if I can take on that "The Purge" next."
"I'll be sure to hold back," Ryuki replied with a soft chuckle.
Amid the happy atmosphere, another figure made his way through the students. A tall, imposing man with thick arms and traditional robes—Gongenzaka's father—strode proudly to his son. His stern expression softened for just a moment.
"Noboru," he began, voice deep and unwavering. "You've walked your path of Steadfast Dueling with strength and resolve. I am proud."
Gongenzaka stood taller, face almost flushing with emotion.
"You've shown me today that your path is your own," his father continued. "And when you are ready... I will pass on the dojo to you."
There was a small gasp among the onlookers, but Gongenzaka didn't hesitate. He lowered his head respectfully and answered, "I will accept it with honor."
A round of applause followed, with even Ryuki offering a light bow of respect.
A few feet away, Shuzo turned toward Ryuki, fiddling with a small camera device in his hand.
"Oh! By the way, I recorded the whole duel," Shuzo said with a grin. "I'll be uploading it to You Show's website later. It'll be great promotion for the school—and let's face it, that dragon of yours deserves to go viral."
Ryuki laughed lightly. "Thank you, Shuzo-san. That helps a lot."
As the celebrations wrapped up and the sun began to dip below the skyline, Ryuki, Rin, and Ruri quietly slipped away, making their way back to their shared apartment in the city's quieter district.
By the time they arrived, the scent of dinner from neighboring homes had filled the halls. The trio entered their apartment and were greeted by a somewhat surreal sight: both Chrono Dran and Chrono Tigar were lounging on the couch, eyes fixed on the television as if they were ordinary roommates.
"Welcome back!" Dran called cheerfully.
Chrono Tigar lazily glanced over his shoulder. "Yo. How was the day?"
"Busy," Ryuki replied, loosening his jacket. "I had a duel against Gongenzaka today."
"And?" Tigar asked, ears twitching.
"I won," Ryuki replied with a nod.
"Oho?" Tigar smirked. "You're on fire lately."
Rin rolled her eyes. "He's always on fire. Kind of in the name."
As they settled in, Ryuki reached over and took the remote from Dran.
"Let's see what's on the news."
He flipped to the local channel—and the cheerful ambiance instantly turned cold.
Headline: "Mysterious Duelist Abductions Continue—Fusion Users Targeted"
The broadcast shifted to a montage of ruined buildings, shattered duel fields, and scattered Duel Disks. A grim reporter narrated with urgency.
"Authorities report that over thirty duelists have gone missing over the last few days. All victims are confirmed to be Fusion users. Despite increased patrols and security measures implemented by LDS, the attacker remains at large and shows no mercy to those who resist. Several buildings across Maiami City have been damaged or outright destroyed..."
The footage rolled over scorched streets and collapsed domes—scenes eerily reminiscent of Academia's attack patterns.
Ryuki's jaw tightened. Rin's expression grew serious, while Ruri took a slow step back from the screen, her gaze darkening with horror.
She knew.
Her voice trembled. "It's... nii-san."
Rin turned to her. "Are you sure?"
Ruri nodded silently, heart sinking deeper into her chest. "I know how he fights. And if Yuto is with him... then they've gone too far."
Chrono Tigar frowned, eyes narrowing. "Shouldn't we contact Akaba Reiji about this?"
Ryuki shook his head. "He's still on break, same with his mother. But he should be back by tomorrow."
Ruri took a sharp breath and turned toward the door. "I can't just sit here. I have to go. I need to talk to him."
Ryuki immediately stepped in front of her. "You're thinking of going after him alone?"
"If I can just talk to him—"
"Ruri, no," Ryuki interrupted, tone firm. "Right now, your brother sees everyone as an enemy. If you confront him now, he may think you're being used by Academia. He won't hesitate to attack—even you."
His words stung. Ruri bit her lip, turning her head away.
"Then what am I supposed to do?"
"We wait," Ryuki said calmly. "When Reiji returns, we'll make a plan. If we corner him properly, maybe we can get through to him without a full-scale fight."
She looked up at him, conflicted, but slowly nodded. "Then... when the time comes, I want to be the one to duel him."
Ryuki hesitated for a moment. "We'll talk about that when it happens."
Sensing the tension, Rin decided to shift the topic.
"Well, we're all trying to qualify for the Maiami Championship, right? What's everyone's current win rate?"
Ryuki relaxed slightly. "Good point. How are you two doing?"
Ruri folded her arms and spoke with confidence. "I'm at 82.1%."
"81.6% for me," Rin added, with a proud tilt of her chin.
Ryuki nodded, clearly impressed. "That's more than enough. You're both in great standing."
He let out a small sigh. "Gongenzaka's gonna have a harder time, though. Since I beat him, he needs to win six matches in a row to qualify."
"Well," Rin said, "he did ask for a high-stakes duel."
"True," Ryuki chuckled.
The evening rolled on peacefully. After dinner—courtesy of Tigar's surprisingly decent culinary skills—the five of them cleaned up and took turns in the bath.
By the time the lights dimmed and midnight crept near, Ryuki was seated at his desk, eyes locked on a stack of lesson plans. A soft lamp illuminated the scattered pages outlining next week's lecture: the advanced mechanics of Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Summoning.
"They're gonna love this one," he muttered, adjusting the final section.
Just as he began stacking the papers, his door creaked open.
He turned—and froze.
Ruri stood at the doorway, already dressed in light pink pajamas, hair down and eyes calm but slightly flushed.
"Ruri? Is something wrong?" Ryuki asked.
"Can I sleep with you tonight?" she asked plainly.
Ryuki turned red instantly. "W-Wha—? Wait, huh?!"
"Rin got to sleep with you before," Ruri said with a completely straight face. "It's only fair I get to do it too."
He blinked rapidly, utterly flustered. "Y-you make it sound so casual..."
She shrugged and walked in anyway, closing the door behind her. "So, can I?"
With a defeated sigh—and a smile he couldn't hide—Ryuki stood up, pulled back the covers, and made space for her.
"Alright, alright... Come on."
She slid in beside him, resting her head on his arm. Her hair tickled his shoulder, and her presence was warm, steady.
As her breathing slowed, eyes gently closing, Ryuki softly leaned over and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"Good night, Ruri."
Before long, he drifted off beside her, heart full and mind eased—at least for the night.
Across the hall, Rin stirred from her bed, glancing at the empty space beside her.
"Figured she'd do that," she murmured with a knowing smile.
She rolled over, nestling into her blanket. "Guess it's her turn tonight."
And with that, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to dream.
-----
A new day began in Maiami City. The rising sun poured through the curtains of Ryuki's room, bathing the space in golden light. Slowly, Ryuki's eyes fluttered open. The first thing he saw was Ruri, peacefully asleep beside him, her expression serene and full of comfort. He smiled gently and reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face with tender affection.
As his fingers ran softly through her hair, memories of his past life flickered in his mind—memories of solitude, duty, and unrelenting responsibility. Back in his world, in the halls of the Dragon Empire Branch and the cold, ordered chambers of the Kagero Clan's headquarters in England, Ryuki had known little more than work at 16 years of age. As the youngest Clan Master in modern memory, expectations weighed heavily on his shoulders. His days were filled with strategies, training, and high-level cardfights, all to preserve the peace and making sure that all cardfighters can enjoy themselves.
Romance had no place in such a life. Well, not really, as there is one particular girl who's been at Ryuki's side and he is aware of her feelings for him, but Ryuki was a bit hesitant if he wanted to take it to the next step.
"Emi." Ryuki whispered those words as he remembered the time he spent with Emi, even though with his busy schedule.
And yet now... things were different. Two rays of warmth had pierced that armor of ice—Ruri, gentle and compassionate, and Rin, spirited and free. The idea of sharing his life with both had once seemed impossible, even foolish. But in this world, where fate and dueling intertwined in unexpected ways, he'd found something worth fighting for beyond honor and responsibility.
He looked at Ruri again, his heart light. When this is over... I'll take them to my world. If they wish, we'll settle down there—together.
As if hearing his thoughts, Ruri stirred. Her eyes opened slowly, blinking away the sleep before meeting Ryuki's. A small smile formed on her lips.
"Good morning, Ryuki," she whispered.
"Morning, Ruri," he replied, kissing her forehead softly like he had the night before. A faint blush crept across her cheeks.
"How did you sleep?" he asked.
"One of the most peaceful nights I've had," she replied sincerely, snuggling briefly into his shoulder before sitting up.
"I'm glad to hear that. We should get up—Rin's probably still in bed."
Ruri nodded, slipping out from the covers and heading to her room to wake her counterpart. As she left, the faint hum of light energy shimmered into view. Chrono Dran and Chrono Tigar emerged from their cards, floating by the edge of the room.
"Thanks for giving us that moment," Ryuki said softly to the two Zodiac Time Beasts.
Dran gave a small bow, and Tigar nodded in agreement. "Of course," the mechanical tiger spirit replied. "But we came out because we have something to report. Something important—regarding Planet Cray."
Ryuki's gaze sharpened. "Understood. After breakfast."
The two Zodiacs agreed and floated toward the living room, eager to join the morning meal. As Ryuki stepped out into the hallway, he was surprised to see Rin already up—barely. She was standing by the wall, eyes half-closed and wobbling slightly.
"Rin, go wash your face," he chuckled. "I'll start on breakfast. Ruri, could you help her?"
"Got it," Ruri replied, gently guiding Rin toward the sink.
As he began preparing the meal, Ryuki turned on the television to catch the morning news. The headline flashed in red across the screen:
"Fusion Duelists Continue to Disappear — Total Count Rises to 35!"
His hand froze, spatula mid-flip.
The anchor's voice continued: "Despite increased patrols and surveillance from LDS, the mysterious figure responsible continues to evade capture. Several buildings were damaged in the latest confrontation, and all victims appear to be Fusion Duelists."
Then the screen shifted to an image—a single, blurry still of the suspect fleeing a ruined structure.
Ryuki's eyes narrowed. Shun Kurosaki.
"...They have a photo now," he muttered.
Behind him, Ruri gasped. Her face went pale, hands trembling. Her brother... he was now a marked man. The entire city would recognize him. There would be no hiding, no more running.
Then came the next blow.
The broadcast continued, now shifting to an interview.
"To further confirm the suspect's identity, we now bring you to an eyewitness who captured the photo—LDS student Masumi Kotsu."
The camera turned to the confident figure of Masumi. Her tone was cold, even bitter.
"He's the one. He's been hunting down our students and Fusion instructors without mercy," she said, her voice full of restrained anger. "My mentor was one of his victims. He doesn't deserve mercy."
Ruri turned away from the screen, clutching her arms. Her whole body trembled.
Ryuki turned off the television. "That's enough."
There was silence. The air was heavy.
"You okay?" Ryuki asked gently, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"I... I'm trying," she murmured. "But every day, it's getting harder. I just... I want to believe my brother isn't completely lost."
Rin stepped in, placing a hand on Ruri's other shoulder. "Let's eat first. We can't think on an empty stomach."
They shared a quiet breakfast, the Zodiac Time Beasts sitting at the table with them in their chibi forms, trying their best to lift the mood with lighthearted banter. After cleaning up, Ryuki leaned back in his chair.
"Alright. Dran, Tigar—your reports?"
Dran floated forward. "Bad news first. Gastille, the leader of Gyze's surviving forces, has vanished."
Ryuki stiffened. "You lost track of him?"
"Yes. Even with the Genesis Clan's foresight magic, his presence is completely masked. It's as if he's erased himself from time."
Tigar then chimed in. "But there's good news, and this one concerns Ruri and Rin."
The girls perked up slightly.
"Both Lyrical Luscinia Assembly Nightingale and Wind Witch Winter Bell have survived," Tigar said with a gentle smile. "They're being treated by the Angel Feather. Though they'll never return to combat, their lives are no longer in danger."
Ruri covered her mouth. Tears welled in her eyes. Rin immediately began to cry.
"They're... they're alive...!" Ruri sobbed.
"I thought we lost them..." Rin added through her tears.
The two girls embraced, overwhelmed with emotion. Their original partners—decks that had once carried them through countless battles—were safe. And though they could never fight again, knowing they would live on brought indescribable relief.
Ryuki let them have their moment. He smiled faintly. Even a sliver of hope is enough to keep moving forward.
But before they could continue with the planning, a knock echoed through the apartment.
Ryuki stood and opened the door.
Standing outside was Nakajima, dressed formally.
"Nakajima?" Ryuki asked, raising an eyebrow. "What brings you here?"
"The chairman wants to see you. All of you," Nakajima said simply.
"Reiji?" Ryuki asked, surprised. "But I thought he was still on leave."
"He returned earlier than expected. He's waiting at LDS. Come quickly."
Before Ryuki could ask more, Nakajima held up a hand. "You'll get your answers soon. For now, just come."
Ryuki nodded and returned inside.
"Who was it?" Ruri asked.
"Nakajima. Reiji wants to talk to us—he's already back."
Both girls exchanged a glance, uncertain but ready.
"Guess we're heading to LDS," Rin said.
Outside, a sleek black limousine was already waiting at the curb. Nakajima stood by the open door.
"Please get in," he said with a polite bow. "We're expected."
And with that, the next phase of the Flame Monarch's journey had begun.
-----
The black limousine rolled to a gentle stop before the grand façade of Leo Duel School. As the doors opened, Ryuki, Ruri, and Rin stepped out with Nakajima escorting them. The towering glass panels reflected the morning sun, giving the building an almost divine gleam—a fitting place for a fateful meeting.
Upon entering the front lobby, Nakajima gave the receptionist a polite nod. "Please inform the President that Himejima Ryuki, Kurosaki Ruri, and Kazehaya Rin have arrived. I'll be escorting them personally."
After the formalities, the four of them proceeded to the executive elevators. The air grew tenser with each floor they ascended. None of them spoke, but they all knew that the conversation awaiting them would be critical. When the elevator dinged at the top floor, they stepped into a polished corridor ending in a grand, metallic door.
"This is where I leave you," Nakajima said with a bow, stepping back. "The President is expecting you."
As if on cue, the doors slid open automatically. Inside was a sleek office filled with a minimalist, yet imposing aesthetic. Behind a long glass desk stood Reiji Akaba, arms calmly behind his back. Sitting beside him was his composed mother, Himika, and nearby stood a quiet child with lavender hair, wearing a light blue jacket and a newsboy cap.
"Thank you for coming," Reiji said, voice cool yet respectful.
Ryuki gave a courteous nod. "Thank you for having us, Reiji. Though, I'm curious—who is the child?"
Himika responded gently. "This is Reira. He's Reiji-san's adopted brother."
Ryuki tilted his head. "That's interesting... but forgive me, Reira is clearly a girl."
Both Reiji and Himika blinked, slightly taken aback. "Are you... serious?" Reiji asked, skeptical.
Turning his attention to Reira, Ryuki crouched slightly, softening his voice. "Is that true, Reira?"
The child hesitated, then gave a small nod. "I... I didn't want to bother you."
In response, Himika walked over and knelt, embracing her. "You are never a bother. You're part of this family, Reira."
Moved by the sight, Ruri and Rin approached Reira with kindness, gently coaxing her into conversation. She didn't resist. Instead, she slowly started to open up—like a flower warmed by sunlight.
After a few moments, Reiji brought the conversation back to the matter at hand. "Thank you again—for treating her like any normal child."
"She is normal," Ryuki answered simply. "Normal doesn't mean average. It means being accepted."
With that, he straightened. "I suppose it's time to explain everything."
Ruri was first. With a heavy sigh, she revealed her true origin: that she came from the Xyz Dimension, and that her very presence in Standard triggered the attack on her homeland. Her voice trembled, but she didn't avert her gaze.
Rin followed, her tone more defensive but just as somber. "I'm from the Synchro Dimension. Unlike the others, our war wasn't with Academia. It was between ourselves—Tops and Commons. The divide is deep, and it's dangerous."
Reiji furrowed his brow. "That changes my original strategy. I had intended to make first contact with Synchro. But now... I'll need a contingency."
Himika looked sympathetically at Rin. "You must have endured so much."
Rin's smile was bittersweet. "You get used to it. Doesn't mean it stops hurting."
Then it was Ryuki's turn. He took a breath.
"I'm not from any of the Four Dimensions. I'm from another world entirely."
The Akaba family looked at him skeptically. But Ryuki tapped his Duel Disk and revealed a physical card—Dragonic Overlord, but with a Cardfight Vanguard design. The art, the format, the world—it was alien to them.
"I come from a reality where Vanguard is the dominant game. And yes, Planet Cray is real."
The claim would've been too far-fetched—until Chrono Dran and Chrono Tigar phased into the room with a shimmering light, appearing before the Akaba family.
"Greetings," Dran said with a bow.
Reiji took a step back. "They're... alive?"
"As real as any Duel Spirit," Ryuki said. "I've seen things you can't imagine. I've also fought battles that no child should. I was raised into this—one of the strongest fighters in Europe, the Fifth Ranked World Cardfighter... and the Kagero Clan Master."
Reiji's eyes narrowed, his respect now fully earned. "I see... You and I aren't so different after all."
Himika nodded slowly. "Two boys forced to become men far too soon."
With formalities aside, Reiji now leaned forward. "Then I suppose you deserve to hear our plans. To tell you the truth we intend to counter Academia. But first, we'll be conducting the Maiami Championship as a cover for the Lancers Selection—our elite strike force."
Ryuki frowned slightly. "Risky. You're bringing them into a war zone."
"They'll be chosen carefully," Reiji replied. "The strongest among the young generation. Sakaki Yuya, Hiragi Yuzu, Gongenzaka Noboru, Kurosaki Ruri and Kazehaya Rin—they're already on the shortlist of potential candidates."
Ryuki raised an eyebrow. "And the rest of LDS' top students?"
"They're skilled... but not yet ready."
Himika now addressed Ryuki. "Ryuki-san, Would you consider joining as Vice-Commander of the Lancers?"
"I was going to join even if you didn't ask," Ryuki replied without hesitation. "If we're to stop Leo and preserve the balance of the multiverse, count me in."
Reiji and Himika exchanged glances, impressed by his conviction. "Then you should see this," Ryuki added, plugging his Duel Disk into the LDS mainframe. "It's time you saw the full picture."
Data began to download, illuminating the wide screen behind Reiji's desk. The contents were... horrifying.
Arc Area Project. Revival Zero.
The files detailed Leo Akaba's intention to erase entire dimensions—to harvest their energy and revive his daughter, Ray.
"This is dimensional genocide," Himika whispered, hands trembling.
"And it doesn't stop there," Ryuki continued. "You remember Zarc?"
Reiji tensed. "Yes. The Demon Duelist of legend. I read it through Yusho's letter."
"Well, here's the thing. After his rampage and shattered the Original Dimension. Ray sealed him using herself as the medium. And if Leo's trying to revive Ray—"
"Then Zarc returns with her," Himika finished grimly.
Ryuki nodded and projected four pictures: Yuya, Yuto, Yugo, and Yuri.
"These four are the vessels of Zarc."
Reiji looked at Yuya's image. "You're saying... he'll become Zarc?"
"Only if he succumbs to darkness. But he won't. I've been watching him. As long as one of the four stays clean, Zarc can't resurrect."
Reiji sighed, a glimmer of hope. "That... eases the burden."
Then Ryuki showed another quartet: Yuzu, Ruri, Rin, and Serena.
Reiji's face paled. "Serena... she's my sister's fragment?"
Himika's voice was soft. "How... how did you meet her?"
Reiji looked down. "It was years ago. I accidentally used one of Father's prototypes and ended up in Academia. That's where I met Serena. Leo spotted me but said nothing. Just sent me back."
Himika embraced her son, her voice strained. "Thank you, Ryuki. You've given us more clarity than we've had in years."
As they checked the time, the morning had already slipped away. Noon light now filtered through the windows.
"We'll take our leave," Ryuki said, offering one final bow.
After the trio departed, Himika turned to her son. "So... what now?"
"Now we prepare," Reiji said, eyes firm. "We move forward with the Championship. But we'll be ready for anything."
—
Outside, Ryuki, Ruri, and Rin stepped into the sunlight, but their exit was interrupted by the sight of Masumi, Hokuto, and Yaiba running past them in a hurry.
"They look urgent," Ruri said.
"Let them be," Ryuki replied. "Everyone has their own battles to fight."
Rin grinned. "Speaking of battles, how about ramen for lunch?"
Ruri's eyes lit up. "That sounds wonderful."
"I know a great place!" Rin exclaimed, already grabbing Ryuki's arm. "Come on!"
Minutes later, the trio entered a cozy ramen shop nestled in a quiet street corner. The scent of broth and sizzling pork filled the air—and to their surprise, they weren't alone.
"Yo, Ryuki!" Yuya waved, seated with Gongenzaka at a corner booth.
Ruri smiled. "Didn't expect to see you two here."
"This place is our secret hideout," Yuya said with a sheepish grin. "Kind of a tradition."
Gongenzaka gave a formal nod. "An honorable establishment for honorable warriors."
Ryuki chuckled. "Well, it's our base of operations now too."
The five of them gathered around the table. As ramen bowls were set before them, talk flowed easily—from the championship to daily training, from shared worries to dreams of peace. For now, at least, they could savor the warmth of friendship... before the fires of war began anew.
