Chapter 60:
Chapter 60:
Jiang Nan’s attitude was no surprise to Jiang Feng. He had expected this. Jiang Nan was never the type to endure hardship; he only talked a big game.
Still, Jiang Nan tried to appeal to the director. “Director, I think the work distribution here is unfair. Cleaning the pigsty is the hardest job, and since this experience is mainly for my younger brother’s growth, I’m just here to supervise him.”
“Oh? Didn’t you tell my dad that you came here to take care of me?” Jiang Feng smirked. “Now you’ve promoted yourself to supervisor?”
“Xiao Feng, don’t always pick on me,” Jiang Nan replied, his face darkening. “We’re seriously discussing the pigsty here. No one person can clean it alone. Since you’re the one supposed to be reformed, you should take the lead.”
Even those nearby couldn’t stand the hypocrisy anymore.
“Jiang Nan, do you have no shame?” Bai Qingqing scoffed. “You drew the lot. Just do your job and stop making excuses.”
Her words hit Jiang Nan like a slap.
“Miss Bai, I’m just trying to help my younger brother. He’s lazy and disobedient, so as his older brother, it’s my duty to guide him,” Jiang Nan said, trying to sound righteous. “I know it may be misunderstood, but I’m willing to bear this for Xiao Feng. As his big brother, I not only need to care for him but also keep him in line.”
Jiang Nan looked every bit the devoted elder brother, but his speech only made Jiang Feng roll his eyes.
“Shut up.”
Jiang Feng’s tone turned cold. “First of all, we aren’t even blood-related. Second, you’re the one who drew the lot to clean the pigsty, so just do it. Neither of us wants to swap with you.”
Wait… we?
Bai Qingqing’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t help but glance at Jiang Feng.
There he stood, casually dressed, with a small Luban print on his shirt and messy, spiked hair. Yet, standing in the sunlight with a confident, almost mischievous grin, he looked strangely appealing. She was caught off guard by her sudden attraction.
The director, who had been watching them argue for a while, finally stepped in. They had gotten enough material.
“The lot was drawn, and the result stands. It’s getting late. If you don’t start now, you won’t be eating dinner.”
“But, Director…” Jiang Nan tried again.
“No ‘buts.’ Hurry up.”
“…”
Seeing that the director was serious, Jiang Nan had no choice but to put on a mask and gather his cleaning supplies. He pinched his nose in frustration as he headed to the pigsty.
Meanwhile, Jiang Feng grabbed a bag and set off to the mountains.
…
The vegetable fields were far up the mountain, and by the time Jiang Feng had finished picking vegetables and made his way back, two hours had passed. The sky had already begun to darken.
As soon as he set down his backpack, he heard voices raised in argument. It was Jiang Nan, locked in a dispute with the grandmother.
“What do you mean it’s not clean? I think it’s spotless! How clean do you expect a pigsty to be?” Jiang Nan’s face was flushed with anger, his body covered in pig dung. His once composed demeanor was now shattered, revealing a far less dignified expression.
“You lazy city boy! You didn’t clean anything! The inside and outside are still filthy,” the grandmother retorted, clearly unimpressed. “You city folk are so delicate. You can’t even sweep a pigsty properly. Back in my day, we worked much harder without complaining! Look at Jiang Feng—he spent two hours picking vegetables in the mountains without a word of complaint, while you’ve been whining this whole time!”
Jiang Feng stood there, somewhat embarrassed to have been dragged into the scolding. He’d just been minding his own business, but somehow ended up in the middle of the argument.
However, Jiang Nan was in a much worse state. His clothes were smeared with yellow, foul-smelling stains, and there wasn’t a clean spot left on him.
Yikes.
Jiang Feng couldn’t help but feel a bit smug about it.
Jiang Nan followed the grandmother’s gaze and spotted Jiang Feng, standing there clean and composed. His face wasn’t flushed, and he wasn’t even breathing hard. The sight made Jiang Nan’s frustration boil over. His anger reached a breaking point.
“How is it fair that he got the easy job of picking vegetables while I’m stuck with this mess? Your pigsty is filthy—there’s not a single clean spot. It took me two hours to clean it! You think standing around and watching doesn’t hurt? If you’re so capable, why don’t you try it!”
“You ungrateful brat! How dare you talk back like that!” the grandmother snapped, her face turning stern. “If you don’t want to clean, then you don’t get to eat!”
“Why not?” Jiang Nan protested.
“Because I’m the one who grew these vegetables!” the grandmother shot back. Then, she turned to Jiang Feng with a much softer expression. “It must have been tough picking vegetables. Go take a rest outside; dinner will be ready soon!”
