Chapter 15
The results showed up a week later and both Izuku and Tanya were at the Midoria household to open them while Inko made them supper. Izuku went first and a metallic disc came out of the envelope. He put it on the table in the living room and a tiny All Might appeared and explained the whole situation.
“I wonder if anyone else got All Might personally?” Izuku asked Tanya with a wink.
Tanya chuckled and they listened to All Might drone on, then he showed the results. “I got first?”
“Like there was any doubt.” Izuku said and put his away. “Go ahead and let's see what he says.”
“I doubt it's any different than yours. You are his golden boy, you know.”
Izuku chuckled this time and they watched Tanya's recording. The only difference was that All Might added in that her mother would have been so proud of her to rub it in the government faces like she did. That had both of them smiling wide smiles, because All Might understood her motivations.
“I think their calculations are a little off.” Izuku said as he put his arm around Tanya. “How can we both have a perfect score for the exam and also have different scores? The numbers don't match up.”
Tanya leaned against him. “I think they have some leeway with that. A perfect score could be the normal limit for both the villain points and the rescue points, both of which we easily matched and then beat. Excessively.”
Izuku barked a laugh. “If the normal top limit is a hundred points for each, then yes. We kicked its ass.”
“They must have the support course build those things.” Tanya mused. “I hope they enjoy having to work so hard to fix them all. We made a huge mess of them.”
“We sure did.” Izuku said.
“It's ready!” Inko said and brought in a cake that was half-green and half grey. “Congratulations! Both of you!”
“Aww! Thanks, Mom!” Izuku said.
“Thank you, Inko.” Tanya said.
“It's nothing.” Inko said and waved at the candles. “Go ahead and make a wish!”
“That's for birthdays, Mom.” Izuku commented.
“Psh!” Inko said with a laugh.
Tanya and Izuku exchanged looks, shrugged, and blew the candles out together.
*
The first day of the school year quickly arrived and students for UA flooded onto the campus. Just because they didn't get into the two Hero classes, the general courses also taught the students the things they would need to use their quirks effectively. They just didn't receive the extensive specialization that the Hero students would get.
One such student was a three foot tall purple-haired boy named Mineta. He had done extremely well on the entrance exam and came in forty-first. He would be the first one to advance if any of the hero students were either dropped to the general course or kicked out. He hoped with all of his being that it would happen, because the hottest girls were in the hero course.
None of the other students even noticed him in the shuffle to get into the main building, because he was so short. He was used to that and went along with the flow, since they were all going to the same place for orientation to be assigned a classroom and then listen to a lecture.
The hero students were not going there first, because they already had a classroom assigned and were instructed to go to their homeroom to meet their teacher.
“That door is huge.” Izuku said as he and Tanya entered the classroom of 1-A.
“I didn't notice any giant quirks at the practicals.” Tanya commented.
“Please get your feet off the desk! That's disrespectful of the people that made that desk!” Iida said.
“Pfft.” Bakugo huffed and then he saw Izuku. “YOU!”
“Yes, me. I told you I'd get in.” Izuku said.
“You can't! You don't have a quirk!” Bakugo exclaimed.
“I didn't manifest until last year.” Izuku said. “Late bloomer and all that.”
“WHAT? No, that's not possible!” Bakugo said and stood.
“Sure it is. Everyone is different and don't get their powers at the same time.” Tanya said. “Like me, for example. I've had my quirk since I was born.”
Several of the students in the class gasped.
“You're not a mutate like me!” A pink skinned girl with spiky pink hair and odd looking horns said.
“No, I've just always had an active quirk.”
“That's awesome!” A familiar female voice said from behind them.
“Hi, Uraraka.” Izuku said and smiled at the girl. She blushed and her rosy cheeks were a bit more rosy.
“Did you get those changes sent in?” Tanya asked.
“I did.” Uraraka said with a nod and walked over to them. “The support company sent me this for you.”
“What is it?” Izuku asked and accepted the letter. He opened it and his eyes widened. “No way!”
Tanya leaned over to look and smiled. “Nice going, Izuku!”
“What is it?” Iida asked.
“It's a letter of thanks and a check.” Izuku said. “Our ideas for Uraraka's suit were bought by the support company and they've already adapted it to six other heroes.”
“No, it was your idea.” Tanya corrected. “You even came up with the joystick controllers.”
“But, we always...” Izuku stopped talking when Tanya put a hand over his mouth.
“You can buy me supper on the weekend, all right?”
Izuku knew he wasn't going to get away with trying to give her half of the significant amount of money that he held in his hand, so he nodded and she winked at him.
“Everyone settle down.” A stern voice said from behind the teacher's desk.
Izuku and Tanya chose two desks near the back of the room and sat. Uraraka and Iida followed suit and the others in the class did as well.
“Eight seconds was a long time for you to settle down.” A man said as he stood up and his sleeping bag fell away.
“Eraserhead!” Izuku exclaimed and then slapped his hand over his own mouth. “I'm sorry for the outburst, sir.”
The man gave him a raised eyebrow for a moment, then shrugged. “If you're here to socialize, I suggest you find another classroom to do it in.” He said and reached under the teacher's desk and picked up a cardboard box. “Put these on and follow me to the athletics field behind the school.”
The students watched as he dumped out a pile of track uniforms with a U on the chest and a big A on the stomach.
Izuku and Tanya went over and looked at them to see names embroidered on the collars and waistbands. They grabbed their own and ran from the room to the bathroom to change. The other students followed suit and they all went to the field behind the school.
“Not bad.” Aizawa said to them. “We're here for your quirk assessment test.”
“What about orientation?” Uraraka asked.
“You can go waste time with them if you want. There are a lot of students that would kill to get your spot in this class.” Aizawa said and she clamped her mouth shut. “Any other objections?”
Everyone shook their heads.
“I know you've all had physical assessment tests during middle school and they are as ridiculous as they are useless to you.” Aizawa said. “They forbid you from using your quirks because it's unfair to the standard results that they want everyone to match up with.”
Izuku raised his hand. “Sir, if I may interject.”
Aizawa raised his eyebrow again and then nodded.
“Some quirks are useless for things like these.” Izuku said and pointed to a girl near the side of the group. “The invisible girl over there can't make the tasks easier for herself by making either them or herself invisible.” He said and then pointed to a guy that had a large muscular tail. “Unless he can use his tail like a springboard, the extra added weight will actually make him slower for a lot of the tests.”
Aizawa looked pensive for a moment as he thought about that. “The standard tests are just that, standard. Those with quirks that can be adapted for it should be.”
“I know. I was just making sure we all understand that some of us will perform like someone who's quirkless, because the quirks are not applicable.”
Aizawa looked at Tanya. “You mean like someone that uses toy guns.”
Izuku chuckled. “Tanya's going to kick our asses.”
“She didn't move well at the exams and just hovered in place for most of it.” Iida commented.
“The space was too confined for me to really let go.” Tanya said and waved at the wide and empty field. “None of you are going to touch me out here.”
“I sincerely doubt that.” Iida said with a smile.
“You shouldn't.” Tanya said, smugly.
“That's enough.” Aizawa said and took a baseball out of his pocket before he tossed it to Tanya. “You earned first place in the exams. I want you to throw that as hard as you can.”
“WHAT?!?” Bakugo yelled. “She got first? How?”
“Pure talent.” Tanya said and walked over to the circle on the ground.
“You can do whatever you want to throw it, as long as you don't leave the circle.” Aizawa said.
Tanya looked down at the round ball and wondered what she could use to propel it.
“Corkscrew it!” Izuku said and held his hand up to show her the right grip.
Tanya let a manic smile show on her face. “Thanks, Izuku.” She said and gripped the baseball in the proper hold to throw it and twist it into a corkscrew pitch. She bent down slightly and air started to flow around her.
“What is she doing?” Uraraka asked in a whisper.
“Charging up the launch.” Izuku said with a smile and then he gasped. “Everyone! Cover your ears!”
Tanya braced herself and turned half of her body to the right, then she launched herself towards the left with her feet an inch off the ground while staying perfectly in the circle. She spun faster and faster, becoming a blur, then she used the distance spell on the baseball and let it go.
*KRACKOOOOM!*
The sonic boom at ground level pushed everyone back and a few of them fell to the ground.
“WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!?” Bakugo yelled.
“That was me breaking the sound barrier with a baseball.” Tanya said as she came to a stop and landed.
Aizawa stood there and waited without commenting. He watched the counter on his phone as it tracked the baseball and he didn't let his shock show. He had assumed that the girl's quirk only let her fly and she used guns to compensate for her lack of physical prowess. Boy, was he wrong.
Sound travelled at about 343 metres per second through warm air and Tanya had broken the sound barrier. Depending on how much she surpassed it, her throw was going to be phenomenal. After ten seconds, the phone beeped and Aizawa stared at the distance of 6,174 metres. He did the math in his head and he came up with Mach One Point Eight for the speed of the baseball for its ten seconds of flight.
Aizawa couldn't speak as he imagined the splash in the water it had caused and just held his phone up for everyone to see the results. They were all shocked, except for Izuku and he beamed a smile at Tanya as she sauntered over to him.
“GAH!” Bakugo spat and grabbed his head in frustration. “How? HOW?”
“She's awesome!” Uraraka said and a few of the others nodded.
It took Aizawa a few moments to compose himself before he spoke. “All right, now that the demonstration is over, let's get to the actual tests.”
*
The 50 metre dash was quickly won by Tanya and her supersonic speed in only a second. Iida was flabbergasted that his speed quirk, Engine, had lost so handily to her and he came in second.
The grip strength test was technically a tie between Tanya and Izuku, as they both crushed the measuring devices they used and 999 pounds was the last number appearing on the screens. Only Aizawa knew that the real results gave Izuku the win by a large margin.
Tanya and Uraraka won the standing long jump, because they could fly.
The repeated side steps test was won by Tanya, only because she was so used to redirecting her body with her quirk after years of her delivery service and live combat training in her past life.
Uraraka won the ball throw when Aizawa concluded that if she added a bit more force to her throw after negating the force of gravity on the ball, she could easily overcome nearly all of the air friction it would encounter and the ball would probably never come down. Her actual throw was six and a half kilometres, just edging out Tanya's throw.
Tanya won the long distance run and Uraraka got second place, because she had used her quirk on herself and held onto Tanya's pant leg the whole time. It made everyone laugh, once they recovered. Izuku and Iida came in third in a tie.
Both the toe touches and sit-ups tests were a tie between Izuku and Tanya, because they had been doing them during their training sessions for years and automatically synced up with each other.
Needless to say, Tanya won the day and Izuku was right behind her, with Ida and a girl named Momo Yaoyorozu tied for third. As Izuku had predicted, several of the students all had normal results and were at the bottom of the rankings.
“Normally, I would expel the worst performing students.”Aizawa said and those bottom students were shocked. “However, Izuku's comments about how unfair using standard tests for quirks is just as unfair as not using the quirks to appear normal, I've decided you're all still students in my class.”
There was a few sighs of relief and the invisible girl dropped to her knees and thanked him. She had been last by a single point and was ecstatic that she wouldn't be cut from the hero course.
Aizawa ignored her theatrics. “There are packages inside your desks that have all the school information and schedules and things you need. Go read them if you want and then you can go home.”
No one made a move to do that and just sat there on the grass to recover.
“That... was... intense.” Uraraka said as she tried to catch her breath.
“You're either out of shape or not working out enough.” Tanya said. “Izuku and I work out practically every day after doing our homework and before indulging in our hobby.”
“Yeah.” Izuku said and sat up. “Our days are pretty full when we want them to be.”
“It's not going to stop, now that we actually did get into UA.” Tanya warned him. “If anything, we are going to have to work harder to stay ahead.”
Izuku nodded and felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to look and saw a track uniform and no one in it. “Hi there, Invisible Girl.”
The girl laughed softly. “My name's Toru. Toru Hagakure.”
“I'm Izuku. Grab a piece of sod and have a seat.”
“Thanks.” Toru said and sat down beside him, her leg and shoulder touching his. “I just wanted to thank you for what you said.”
“There's no need. I was going to point it out regardless.” Izuku said. “I'm glad I helped keep you here.”
“You can't see it; but, I'm blushing.” Toru said.
“I can see it.” Izuku admitted and she caught her breath.
“Wh-what? How?” Toru reached up and her invisible hands touched her invisible face.
“Special contacts.” Izuku said and nodded at Tanya. “We're both wearing them.”
“But... you can't... my quirk...”
“It gathers light from all around you and shows anyone looking at you the light right behind you.” Izuku said. “However, it doesn't absorb heat, air pressure, moisture, or smell.”
All of the other students stared at him.
Izuku saw this and chuckled. “I'm not saying you smell, Toru! I was just giving examples of what your quirk doesn't do. It can only manipulate light and nothing else. What you can do with that light, Tanya and I can only guess at.”
“They're really good at that.” Uraraka said and rolled onto her side to look at Toru, or in her general direction at least. “They've given me a few great ideas for me to try during our first Hero Training class tomorrow afternoon.”
“For me as well.” Iida said. “I never thought of revving my engines while idling to get them used to a higher output for longer.”
“Just don't overdo it.” Izuku warned and glasses guy nodded.
“I've suffered from overheating before. I'll keep being careful.”
“Well, now that we're all rested, let's get those packages and go home.” Tanya said and stood up. She stretched and made sure she wasn't stiff, then held a hand out to Izuku.
“Thanks.” Izuku said and she hauled him to his feet.
“We'll come, too.” Uraraka said and got up from the ground. “Although, that was nice to just lay there.”
“You guys should come to the beach at Mustafu on the weekend.” Izuku suggested.
“There's a beach there now? I thought it was still a dump!” Bakugo nearly shouted.
“We've had that place cleaned up since middle school ended.” Tanya said and took Izuku's hand to lead him back into the school. “Are we showering here first?”
“We should. Sweating and small train cars full of people are not a great mix.” Izuku replied, which made her nod.
They all went inside to clean up, changed, and grabbed their things from their classroom before they left for home.
