Chapter 20:
Chapter 20: Humble Love 20:
Zhang Ya was truly enraged.
She absolutely didn’t want her family settling down in the provincial city.
If that happened, everyone would know she came from a poor family.
They would know her parents were farmers.
For Zhang Ya, that was something she simply couldn’t accept.
She could already imagine the disdainful, condescending looks people would give her once they found out.
“You need to go back and buy the house in the village right away. Stay here for a couple of days and then go home.”
Zhang Ya ordered firmly.
“No way. It’s sold already; how can we buy it back? And I’ve already spread the word in the village that we’re moving to the provincial city. If we go back now, what will people think of me?”
Wang Fengxia flatly refused.
She had already announced their move; there was no way she’d return to the village.
Zhang Ya took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.
“Mom, Dad, settling in the city isn’t as easy as you think. You’ll need at least one house to do that. Do you know how much a house costs? At least 5 million yuan. How are you going to afford it?”
Zhang Ya brought up the cost of housing, hoping to make her parents reconsider.
“No problem, we’ve already discussed it before coming here. Our family can’t afford a house in the city, but Chen Nuo’s family owns over a dozen properties. Giving us just one isn’t too much to ask, right?”
Zhang Laohan said, puffing on his cigarette, eyes gleaming with greed.
“One house won’t be enough. We need at least seven or eight houses. Otherwise, that fool can forget about marrying you.”
Wang Fengxia chimed in, her greed laid bare without the slightest hint of shame.
“Yeah, Sis, Mom and Dad are right. I’m your own brother, after all. If he wants to marry you, giving me a few houses in the city is only fair!”
Zhang Xiaobao said, rubbing his hands together, eyes filled with burning desire.
“…”
Zhang Ya’s expression darkened. She understood exactly what her family was after.
“No way are you getting any houses.”
Zhang Ya stated firmly, refusing outright. Those houses were hers—no way would she give them up!
“Mom, Dad, you’re oversimplifying things. Chen Nuo may love me and do whatever I say, but his parents would never agree to give you city properties.”
“Listen to me. Go back and buy the house in the village again, then head back home.”
Zhang Ya tried to sound more conciliatory.
“If his parents disagree, then you shouldn’t marry him. Sweetheart, parents can’t always win against their children.”
Wang Fengxia scoffed dismissively.
She knew how much Chen Nuo loved her daughter.
“It’s settled, then. In a couple of days, call Chen Nuo over so we can discuss this with him.”
Zhang Laohan declared, slapping the table for emphasis.
Zhang Ya didn’t reply, turning and leaving the room instead.
Back in her room, her initial anger gave way to sudden calm.
Zhang Ya began to realize that demanding houses from Chen Nuo before marriage might actually work in her favor.
But instead of giving them to her family, she’d have them transferred to her own name.
It was a form of security for her.
The more she thought about it, the more plausible it seemed, and a glint of determination flashed in her eyes.
She took out her phone, ready to call Chen Nuo.
But no matter how many times she dialed, she kept getting a “busy line” message.
Immediately, anger surged through her.
In the past, Chen Nuo would always answer her calls instantly, no matter what.
Not like this.
…
Two days passed quickly.
During those two days, Zhang Ya tried calling Chen Nuo multiple times.
But every time, the line was “busy.”
This realization made her suspect that Chen Nuo might have blocked her number.
The thought filled Zhang Ya with equal parts fury and anxiety.
“Sweetheart, did that fool come back to apologize? If he did, bring him over.”
In the hotel room, Wang Fengxia glanced at Zhang Ya, speaking casually.
She had no idea that Zhang Ya had been calling Chen Nuo non-stop.
“Got it.”
Zhang Ya answered absentmindedly, already planning to confront Chen Nuo at his workplace.
But just then, a knock came at the hotel room door.
Knock, knock.
“Sweetheart, who’s at the door?”
Wang Fengxia asked, surprised, and turned to Zhang Ya.
“No idea. Probably housekeeping…”
Zhang Ya stood up. But when she opened the door, she saw a delivery courier standing there and frowned.
She didn’t remember ordering anything.
“Hello, are you Ms. Zhang Ya?”
The courier asked.
“Yes, that’s me.”
Zhang Ya nodded, and the courier handed her a package containing a set of documents before leaving.
“What is it?”
Zhang Ya didn’t think much of it at first, but the moment she opened the package and saw the court summons inside, she froze.
A chill ran down her spine, spreading through her entire body.
