Chapter 3: Selfish People
The voice on the other end of the line was devoid of any emotion, like a robot, "Who are you?"
"Business department, Li Yu, employee number 0741."
"We have received your application, please hold on."
The other end was silent for almost half a minute, and then the voice spoke again.
"Upon inquiry, your employee wishes remaining 3 times, the application content complies with relevant regulations, approval is granted, the public relations department will immediately dispatch a specialist to fulfill your employee wishes..."
Mr. Qin interrupted before he finished speaking, "The board of directors has exercised veto power to reject this application."
The voice on the other end paused for a moment, "Reason?"
"This application may harm the company's interests," Mr. Qin said casually.
"......"
The other end fell into long silence again, and after a while said, "The board's exercise of veto power requires unanimous approval from five directors."
"The public relations department will receive the joint signature of the board tomorrow morning."
"Then employee number 0741 from the business department, Li Yu, your application is temporarily frozen, the freeze will last until 12 noon tomorrow."
Mr. Qin picked up the teacup in front of him and gently blew on the tea leaves on the surface of the water.
"I said, the board manages the entire company, which of course includes the public relations department."
"Then I can resign," Li Yu said seriously.
Mr. Qin looked deeply at the young man in front of him, "Where else can you find a company with such generous pay that also meets your requirement for two days off a week?"
"I can't find one, but that doesn't mean I have to do exactly as you say. I'm just here to work, not plan to sell everything to the company."
Mr. Qin shook his head, "Don't be blinded by those false lies. Everything you've achieved this year is not because you are special, but because we chose you. Leaving the company, you will have nothing.
If it weren't for the third record using you, you'd still be in some office building eating takeout bought with coupons while working overtime, and the hard-earned money you save wouldn't be able to buy a toilet in this city."
"That's the kind of thing I'm used to hearing from the company's top management," Li Yu said.
"Bitter medicine cures illness; harsh advice benefits actions." Mr. Qin took a sip of tea, "Some truths are not pleasant to hear, but that is the reality of the world.
What you are chasing is just a seemingly beautiful illusion. Our nation has undergone rises and falls for thousands of years but managed to stand in the world's ranks; do you think it's based on what?
It's just about diligence," Mr. Qin said, his expression also becoming serious.
"You young people always envy people elsewhere, envy them having enough time for rest and entertainment. That's because they are currently at the top of the pyramid.
The world's composition is actually similar to the workplace; the lower your rank, the more you will be ordered around, do the most work, and receive the lowest pay. While the higher your rank, the more people you can order around, even if you do nothing, you can still earn dozens of times the salary of the bottom-level employees.
If you want to live such a life, you must first work desperately. Work harder than your boss, and there are just so many management positions. Your boss will definitely want to continue exploiting you rather than be replaced by you.
So he will also guard against you, if necessary, exercise his power to suppress you. So what can you do? Only work even harder!"
Mr. Qin said firmly, a strange brilliance appearing on his face, "Because it's the only way out!"
Li Yu quietly listened to him and asked, "Then when can I stop?"
"I told you when you become number one and no one else can exploit you, by then you can naturally rest."
"But what if someone more diligent and hardworking appears while you rest?"
Mr. Qin suddenly laughed upon hearing this question, "You are a smart person, good, then I won't beat around the bush with you anymore—competition is, of course, endless; it's like a form of natural evolution, eliminating lazy genes.
That is a human innate weakness, but we can cleanse them away. In reality, we are already doing it, and that's why human civilization has become increasingly splendid."
"But we, will our descendants feel happiness?"
"Evolution has never been about happiness." Mr. Qin said coldly, "You won't find any species in nature that evolve for happiness because if that were the case, they would have been destroyed by other species long ago.
I'll be straightforward; I have never quite liked you because in my view you are too selfish, self-centered, lacking necessary global awareness.
Taylor chose you not because she agrees with the path you chose, but out of religious considerations. She and Windsor very much believe in that kind of thing.
But I am different. I always stand on the side of reason. So-called faith, to me, is just like new technology at best. We research it, unravel it, then make it serve us."
Mr. Qin said a lot in one breath, then continued after sipping his tea.
"I didn't oppose Taylor because now we must set aside differences and seek common ground, even though many of us are old foes."
"Besides, the same blood runs in our veins." Mr. Qin's expression softened as he said the last sentence.
Li Yu, meanwhile, kept staring at the teacup in front of him, then raised his head moments later and repeated, "I need to know the truth."
A look of disappointment appeared on Mr. Qin's face.
"You only need to wait a few more months, then you'll naturally know."
"But I'm a selfish, naive dreamer without any global view," Li Yu said.
"Do you really think we can't replace you?" Mr. Qin's tone sank, "Your employee wish has already been rejected. Once you leave the company, you can forget about ever knowing the truth."
However, at this point, a voice sounded from outside the door, "Says who? I haven't signed it yet."
Taylor walked in from outside, no longer wearing the hippie outfit from Dream Island, but replaced it with Chanel.
"Lao Qin, let me speak to him."
Mr. Qin remained silent, picking up his teacup.
Taylor knew this was his consent, so she smiled slightly at Li Yu and sat down on the other side of the tea table, "I can assure you, we are not enemies, and neither is the company."
"Then who is my enemy?"
"Earth." Taylor sighed, "Earth is our common enemy."
Mr. Qin frowned, "You've said too much."
Taylor seemed unconcerned, "It's just a matter of a few months earlier or later, since he wants to know, let's tell him.
What he said was actually quite right, since we need him to cooperate in the work, we should tell him the truth."
"But the company's rules..." Mr. Qin's brows furrowed even tighter.
Taylor grinned cunningly, "It's not us telling him actively, but his employee wish. I just spoke with the public relations department, and told them I disagree with using veto power.
The public relations department also agreed that I would personally reveal the truth to him."
