Wonder Woman: Goddess of Freedom

Chapter 8: Athena - Water and Thunder

As my blurry sight and ringing ears recover, specs of battle sounds muted by the deepness of the sea, reach my senses and a powerful pulse pushes me deeper into the darkness of the sea. Yet, it wakes me up from the stupor.

"Mom!" Rings the sound of a male voice in my head.

"Mother!" Another deeper voice of a woman.

"Mom! Wake up!" Calls desperately, Altair?

My head is aching terribly.

Their voices keep resonating in my head, I need to push them away.

I'm lifted up swiftly by someone. Jor?

"Mom, are you ok?" says the man who pulled me out of the water.

"SILENCE" I cry in pain.

The noise stops. Now, I can focus. Yet, in pain.

I see my oldest boy, he's the one who pulled me out of the waters. His eyes wide open in surprise and worry.

"Thank you, son. I need a minute, my head is thumping terribly." I look around. I see Etta stalling the two giant machines, countering the sonic weapons with protective wall-like shields, enormous in size and attacking with a longer size sword she materialized and moved by her telekinetic powers. One of them tries to catch her, she swifty avoids it, launching a rocket she materializes in the twirl.

"Where is Jimmy? Is he alright?" I ask, trying to find him around.

Jor lets me go, "Mala already went to look for him."

"Tell her to come out, it will be easier for me to look for him, you three focus on disabling these enemies."

"Yes, mother!" He flies off to support Etta and so I see Mala going out of the waters.

I look around for him. I close my eyes and try to sense his presence. His beating heart.

From down the ocean waves and the moving of the fish, the clashing of the steel and flesh, and cracking of my head, I hear the heart of my beloved son. Swift as my powers allow, I went down, accelerated by the fear of loss. I hold him dear and push myself up out of the waters that torment his way.

On the surface, up above the terrible waters, I pat his cheek.

 "Wake up, son."

Never thought to see my children in such a circumstance.

Seeing him in this state reminded me of a verse I read long ago.

'Nothing in the world is as soft and yielding as water…''

In my desperation I hit his chest hard, making him throw out all the water in his lungs. He takes a big breath trying to get back all the air he lost.

'Yet, for dissolving the hard and inflexible, …'

"Mom," says Jimmy as he opens his eyes. He places his hands on his head.

'Nothing can surpass it…'

I know. The pain. Is not going away.

"Feeling better?" I say to him, patting his head with a smile mustered in relief.

My son, my precious boy.

"Yes, thank you, mom. Though, my head wants to blow."

"Can you fight?"

"Of course! I am your son. Would be a shame if I couldn't!" He says as releasing from me, hand on head. "Let's go, let's not waste more time."

I smile proudly.

We turn to Jor and Etta. I signal him to help Jor, and that I will go to Etta to break their defenses.

I joined the fight with Etta.

Her bright eyes look at me with excitement. "I thought you were on vaca." Smiles.

I furrow my brows. "Focus."

She breaks into laughter. "Did you see brother, I won. Though I am younger, I know her better." Smirks.

"Oh! Shut it, Etta! I will transfer the money later." Says Jor, displeased.

"Don't lose your focus!" I shout.

How many times do I have to correct their ways?!

"Everyone, come to me!"

"Yes, Ma'am" All say at once.

They gather around me. As we block the myriad of attacks that come from the sound cannons that the robots have at their disposal. Jimmy creates an energy ball around us which blocks their attacks.

I don't think he can hold much like this.

"First we have to destroy those damned weapons!" says Jor.

"We must create a barrier that allows us to deflect their attacks more effectively. My barrier can do just as much as we are inside." says Jimmy.

"Mom, can you just connect back with us through Altair, she's becoming annoying," Says Etta, displeased.

"Altair suggests making dense barriers for each of us," says Jor.

"I cannot hold much longer, mom, what should we do?" Says Jimmy desperately.

"Mom! Just connect to the mindhive!" shout Etta.

"I will just bang their faces like we always do!" spouts Jor.

"Mala, connect with me. Jor, Etta, Jimmy, create a distraction."

"Yes, ma'am!" all say.

Connected with her telepathy, "Mother, I am at your orders."

"Hello, daughter. Create a thunderstorm around the machines."

It's been a while since I last saw Mala. She likes to live in Themyscira. There she trains as an amazon warrior. There she is well respected and adored like the little Amazonian Princess.

"Have you been well?"

"Yes," she dryly answers.

A part of my heart tinges with her answer. What am I waiting for?

Altair!

Altair connects me back with all the others.

"Mom! You scared me when suddenly disconnected. Tell me in advance next time!"

"You guys were too loud."

"Even so!" She continues her nagging.

"Don't worry I am fine. Jimmy, can you create a protector for each of us?"

"Right away! What about a helmet, their greatest weapon is the sonic boom. No hearing, no damage."

"Good!"

"Mother, I think I can penetrate their defenses with what you are thinking of doing," said Etta.

"Alright, you know I trust you."

"Wink." She says.

I can't help but chuckle.

Jor turns into the size of the giant machines and picks up the sword that Etta created before. "I will take on the one on the left. Let's show them what Earth is made of!"

Jimmy goes back to Mala, where he creates the energy dense helmet that devoid us from the sounds of the outside.

"Their protective shield is stronger than those of the swarm bots," says Altair. " I can't penetrate their mental defenses with it up. That's why I couldn't notice them before. By the way, Another swarm is coming your way."

"Let's be fast then." I exclaim, as the thunderstorm comes to be and I launch myself the closest I can of both.

The machines, seemingly noticing that their weapons are not working, change: the right one to a light-crescent sword and the left one to a cannon and missiles.

They start moving way faster than before.

Jimmy protects me from the missiles and cannons with his shield and laser beam. His concentration has gotten better since that last time I saw him fighting.

I invoke my own lighting powers mixing them with Mala's thunderstorm, delivering each of the lightning rays to both of the machines. Their energy shield starts to falter, soon after, the deep feminine voice of Etta is heard.

"My turn!"

She creates a big long sharp drill, which she spins. Water takes over the drill and swirls with it. Then, She launches with the drill to the robot at my right fighting with Jimmy, who served as a decoy while she prepared.

She goes through the giant machine, leaving a hole that destroyed the core. It falls to the waters, getting sucked by it.

Mala creates pressure in the water around it, in a way that the machine turns into a ball.

Meanwhile, Jor uses his eye lasers to burn the head of the machine, and with a swift move of the hand breaks into the core and takes it out. The machine falls into the ocean, Mala repeating the same process.

"Did you see that, Mom!" shouts Jor, turning to with a big smile.

"You did well, my son. All of you."

I open my arms wide, "Come."

Jimmy, Etta and Jor come and give me a hug. "My wonderful children, well done. I am happy to see you all together, even in these circumstances. And, even if Mala doesn't come."

"Don't forget me!" says Altair, appearing as an illusion, giving us a hug.

I chuckle. "I love you all."

"We do too, mother," says Etta.

The hug ends with the brightness of eyes and heart.

I Look at Mala, "Would you give me a hug?"

Mala looks at me in silence and opens her arms, "of course, mother." She flies to me, giving me a warm hug.

"I love you, my daughter. Sorry that I haven't gone to see you."

"I am an adult, mother."

"I know." I give her a kiss on the head.

"I missed you." she says, tightening the hug.

"Me too," it came as a whisper.

Three seconds.

She releases me and turns around. "There are more coming, let's get ready."

" My oldest one," I say to Jor. "How's Kyla?"

"She is fine. She is with the Fire Bombers, defending London."

"Good, I hope all's going well there."

Kyla has no metahuman, she needs to be extra careful. I can't help but beg the gods to protect her.

"You should go with her, we can manage here without you"

"Yeah, you better go to her." Said Etta.

"Do not worry, the team will defend her, here though we are powerful, we have a lot to do." he replies.

"I insist you should go." I push him softly.

"Alright, but after this assault, we are a little too late for me to go."

Etta and I look at each other with uneasiness.

"Alright, just after this." I look at him seriously, placing my hand on his shoulder.

He gives me a thumb up, and turns to the second wave of swarm bots.

"Mom, when you come up to the Watchtower, you have to give me a hug too." says Altair.

"Of course, I will." I say with a little laugh.

"Mother! Four more mechas have come out!" says Jimmy, preparing to attack.

"Damn it!" says Jor, looking around at the giant machines that surfaced from down the waters and the bots coming from the east.

"Don't worry brother, we'll do it faster this time." reassures Etta.

"Bet on it!"

"Charge!" I exclaim.
