Chapter 397: Chapter 397: Reconnaissance Array
"Support battalion ready, distance thirty-five, sequential release, fire!"
Behind the fortress clusters, a vast number of Magic Support Vehicles gathered in silence, exuding a murderous aura like a slumbering dragon.
At the command of the legion commander, this slumbering dragon abruptly awoke and unleashed its devastating Dragon Breath toward the sky.
Thousands of Fireball spells shot from the cannons mounted on the vehicles, tracing fiery arcs through the air before crashing into the Insect tide.
In an instant, an immense concentration of fire elements gathered, rendering the raw power of the spells secondary.
What the Wizards truly needed was the Fire Elemental Storm.
Foehn Winds exceeding 100,000 degrees swept through the Insect tide, instantly reducing the creatures to charred husks and ashes.
And this was merely the peripheral effect of the Fire Elemental Storm.
At the heart of the battlefield, the Fire Elemental Storm raged like a merciless furnace, indiscriminately incinerating anything daring enough to enter its domain.
Even third-tier creatures caught within the storm were instantly reduced to dust. Those that managed to endure a moment longer only survived a few extra seconds.
Under the relentless erosion of the fire elements, a process that should have taken millennia to crystallize was drastically accelerated.
At the very center of the Fire Elemental Storm, even low-quality Fire Elemental Gems the size of sesame seeds began to form.
Then, the second wave of Fireball spells arrived.
This wave instantly reinvigorated the already waning Fire Elemental Storm, causing it to expand once more.
The Wizards in the fortress clusters watched as a fiery tornado formed at the epicenter of the explosions.
And this tornado continued to grow with each successive Fireball spell impact.
The raging fire elements transformed into Foehn Winds, cleanly severing the Insect tide in half.
"Good grief, what's left for us to do?"
Inside one of the fortresses, an Old Wizard stared at the distant fiery tornado, muttering to himself in disbelief.
But soon, he noticed something amiss.
The Fireball spells had stopped.
"Something's wrong—prepare to attack!"
At the rear of the fortress clusters, the commander of the Netherfire Legion fell into deep thought as he listened to his subordinate's report.
"Ah, I can't believe I overlooked this."
He pulled out a Communication Crystal Ball from his pocket. Once activated, Jimmy's voice came through.
"What is it, Adams?"
"We may need to adjust our strategy, Jimmy," Commander Adams said in a low voice. "I overlooked one critical detail.
Using the same type of Spell so intensively can create an elemental vacuum.
So our current plan requires some modifications."
"An elemental vacuum?" Jimmy sounded surprised. "You're right—I forgot about that too."
Elemental Spells require vast amounts of elements to fuel them, and Wizards obviously can't conjure these elements out of thin air.
Ambient elements serve as the source for Elemental Spells.
But the concentration of ambient elements in any given space is finite. Large-scale, repeated use of a specific Elemental Spell can deplete those elements, leading to the emergence of an elemental vacuum.
Once an elemental vacuum occurs, any Spell involving that element becomes unusable.
On the battlefield, the White Wizard Legion rarely encountered elemental vacuum due to range limitations. However, the spells cast by the Magic Support Vehicles now were being deployed too far from their origin points. The rate of elemental replenishment couldn't keep up with the vehicles' consumption speed, resulting in elemental vacuum.
"I'll assign some Wizards specialized in elemental studies to calculate the maximum load capacity per unit space for the Magic Support Vehicles. For now, lead the convoy back while leaving two brigades for support.
This Insect tide isn't too severe—the fortress clusters should hold."
"Understood."
Upon hearing Jimmy's response, Adams immediately issued the retreat order to the convoy, retaining only the 1st and 2nd Support Brigades as contingency.
"Sigh, problems indeed emerged," Adams murmured, watching the towering flames in the distance.
Images of those troublesome insects from the Insect tide flashed through his mind, giving him a headache.
"Pure spell suppression won't work. This battle won't be easy."
...
Meanwhile, within the Astral Fortress, Richard and his group navigated through the obsidian passageways.
Grand Wizard Galon's mission, though daunting, wasn't impossible. Richard had learned from the main control system that this Astral Fortress housed a detection array similar to radar.
Though damaged during the fortress's crash, the array could still operate at low power.
If activated, Richard might find his way back.
The Snake King's ancestors had once visited this ancient battlefield, so they weren't far from the Toxic Swamp. Once they located it, the Snake King could guide them back to the Crystal Spire.
From there, Richard could use his previously recorded maps to return to the Floating City.
As for why he didn't use the teleportation array—Richard would say anyone who wanted to risk that cursed thing was welcome to try.
He and Ulysses had been lucky to only get separated during transit. With worse luck, they might have ended up in some chaotic realm or, worse, a temporal rift—possibilities that made Richard shudder.
Better to travel the old-fashioned way.
Tap, tap, tap...
Accompanied by crisp footsteps, a black-robed Wizard pushed open the long-sealed doors to the information hall.
"So this is the information hall. What a pity."
Richard's heart ached at the sight of the shattered crystal artifacts. If intact, who knew how much knowledge they could have yielded?
Even if some of it proved useless, no Wizard would ever turn down more knowledge.
At the center of the hall stood a massive milky-white crystal platform—the operational console for the detection array, and the only intact crystal structure remaining.
As Richard approached, the console suddenly projected an interface under the main system's control.
"Impressive. The Precursors even designed cross-species OS compatibility."
Given the Precursors' likely lack of eyes, Richard deduced this visual interface was tailored for dragons.
Following the prompts, Richard quickly located the scanning option.
The Precursors had designed ten intensity levels for the array. Richard decided to start with the lowest.
[Level 1 Detection Array Activated]
Following the prompt from the main control, the surging energy from the Power Furnace instantly flooded into the long-dormant energy conduits of the Astral Fortress.
In an instant, many of the conduits even shattered outright.
But this didn't hinder the activation of the reconnaissance array.
With a resonant hum, a section of the Astral Fortress's damaged outer shell suddenly lit up with a blue-purple glow.
A powerful energy wave erupted from the array, sweeping across hundreds of thousands of square kilometers around the fortress in the blink of an eye.
Beside the control panel, a projection flickered into existence in the air.
A map spanning a 400-kilometer radius centered on the Astral Fortress appeared within the projection in moments.
Seeing this, Richard quickly recorded the map using his Crystal Ball.
According to the map's display, they only needed to travel a little over 300 kilometers due north to reach the toxic swamp.
"Incredible reconnaissance array," Richard remarked sincerely. "And this is just level one. If it were cranked up to level five or six, it could probably encompass the entire world."
After storing the map, Richard began exploring the control console, eager to see what valuable technology he could extract from it.
But one glance at the information provided by the Miracle Furnace immediately dampened his enthusiasm.
[Material: The Supreme Projector]
[Extractable Information: 3D Projection]
[Extraction Cost: 5 Mental Energy]
[Material: The Supreme Control Bar]
[Extractable Information: Touchscreen Imaging Technology]
[Extraction Cost: 5 Mental Energy]
"What worthless junk."
Richard shook his head at the Miracle Furnace's findings.
These two technologies were utterly useless to him—the Wizard World had long since developed them. If he wanted, he could buy them anytime.
"Seems like the stuff here is just the front end. The real treasures must be the reconnaissance array and the fortress's main control."
Leaving the information hall, Richard turned to the main control to ask for directions to the reconnaissance array.
Such a valuable asset was not something he intended to leave behind.
After receiving the answer, he soon arrived outside the fortress.
Due to design constraints, the reconnaissance array could only be accessed externally, forcing Richard to brave the energy radiation outside the Astral Fortress.
The ancient battlefield stretched endlessly under rolling yellow sands, while the greenish glow of the Radiant Aurora seeped through the fissures in the Astral Fortress, gradually dissipating into invisible energy radiation.
Activating his Myriad Transformation Battle Body and shielding himself with a Magic Barrier, Richard made his way to the reconnaissance array's location.
The array was positioned in the middle section of the fortress, one of the less damaged modules.
Even better, the reconnaissance array wasn't a single monolithic device but rather a collection of components, each roughly one cubic meter in size.
This meant the extraction cost wouldn't be absurdly high.
After some searching, Richard finally found a functional module and detached it from the fortress's main structure.
[Material: Reconnaissance Array Module]
[Extractable Information: Reconnaissance Array Module Manufacturing Technology]
[Extraction Cost: 200 Mental Energy]
Pleased with the Miracle Furnace's report, Richard pocketed the module with satisfaction.
But just as he was retracing his steps back inside the fortress, he suddenly spotted something through a slender fissure that extended to the base of the structure. In the lower chambers of the fortress, there were many crystal-like objects.
Richard was startled by the sight.
Could there be a material storage inside the fortress for daily maintenance and repairs? Thinking this, Richard quickly moved closer to the fissure to examine the contents more carefully.
If that were the case, he might just strike it rich again.
The Astral Fortress wasn't just filled with crystal components—there were plenty of metal parts as well.
If these were indeed materials, there would undoubtedly be many precious Alchemy Materials among them.
However, after a closer look, Richard staggered back a couple of steps in disbelief. He waved his staff and cast a mental identification spell on himself.
After confirming he wasn't hallucinating, he muttered to himself, "Damn, this is a jackpot."
What lay beyond the fissure wasn't repair materials for the fortress—it was thousands of armed Precursor constructs.
