Chapter 23 The Great Shepherd
Looking at the giant flesh lump before him, Richard felt a tremor within his rules.
This phenomenon was uncommon, for such a tremor required two Rule Fragments to complement each other.
Completing an incomplete rule was no simple task. To put it in perspective, a rule was like a sentence, whereas an incomplete rule was like a few words from that sentence. Merely stacking up the number of rules was futile.
To complete a rule, all the missing words had to be found.
"This trip wasn't in vain after all," Richard casually waved his hand, and a huge Magic Blade appeared out of thin air, severing the connection of the flesh lump.
Then, with a light touch of his hand, information about the Miracle Furnace appeared before his eyes.
[Raw Material: Abyss Nest Core]
[Refinable Rules: Life Rule (extremely incomplete), Flesh Rule (extremely incomplete), Nurturing Rule (extremely incomplete)]
[Refinement Cost: 20 Soul Power]
[Refinable Substance: Abyss Blood Essence]
[Refinement Cost: 5,000,000 Magic Power]
Looking at the message from the Miracle Furnace, Richard nodded with satisfaction, then several Rune Chains flew out from his body and sealed the still-trembling flesh lump.
After losing its core, the Abyss Nest didn't die immediately. On the contrary, where Richard had made the cut, masses of flesh buds began to proliferate, attempting to grow another nest core.
Richard didn't stop it. On the contrary, he took out an Image Capturing Crystal Ball with great interest and began to record the scene as he watched.
He was curious to see if the nest could birth another core.
The flesh buds grew rapidly from the severed point, quickly forming a base. Thin white bones emerged from the base, intertwining with each other to construct the shell of the core. Then, flesh began to grow along the white bone shell, this black-and-red flesh replete with boundless Life Energy was almost appetizing if it weren't for Richard's sigh of regret.
"What a pity, it's poisonous."
Although this black-and-red flesh was brimming with Life Energy, it contained a vast amount of alien Energy, which was the Power of Abyss mastered by abyssal creatures.
Ordinary people who consumed this flesh would surely be tainted by the Abyss. Even for beings like Richard, who had arrived at the level of a World Master, devouring this kind of flesh would result in Energy loss without any benefits.
Before long, the flesh completely covered the white bone shell. The severed blood vessels all regenerated flesh buds, which connected to this new core.
At the same time, bizarre patterns emerged on the core's flesh, and in the middle of these patterns, mouths full of sharp teeth began chanting a hair-raising hellish chorus.
Richard was taken aback at the sight.
This thing seems somewhat like Ritual Magic.
During the chanting, the strange patterns were filled with black blood, and a highly aggressive aura burst forth from the core.
Simultaneously, Richard noticed something almost unbelievable — suddenly, the core seemed to have additional rules.
"How... how is this possible?!"
Looking at the core that had finished chanting, Richard felt his whole understanding had been overturned.
This ceremony was akin to Wizard enchantment, adding rules to the Abyss Nest core. And judging by the trembling within him, Richard estimated these rules were identical to those held by the core he had sealed.
But Richard quickly regained his composure.
"The ocean of truth truly is boundless," Richard exclaimed from the heart.
He sealed the newly born core again and resumed his observation. Soon, the core restored itself.
This time, Richard noticed something he had overlooked before.
"Is it about to exhaust its Life Energy?"
Richard touched the somewhat weakened flesh walls around him, casually cut out the newly born core, and sealed it again.
This time, the new core stopped growing halfway, and then the half-formed core began to shrink rapidly. At the same time, the Life Energy from the entire Abyss Nest converged towards the shrinking core.
Boom!
As the nest withered, the apartment building that had lost its support began to collapse.
Richard, sustaining a Magic Barrier, took the thing that had gathered the essence of the entire nest.
Looking at the palm-sized, black, plump flesh worm in his hand, Richard was somewhat puzzled.
"Why did it turn into a worm in the end? Could these cores actually be alive?"
Without overthinking it, Richard sealed the flesh worm and casually tossed it into his pocket. By now, the loud noise from the collapsing building had attracted many Goblins, so Richard cast an Invisibility Technique on himself and left the scene soundlessly.
...
The dazzling flares from the gas searchlights loomed over the entire ruins like the solitary eye of a One-eyed Giant.
Around the ruins, a radius of five kilometers was entirely sealed off, and the Goblins living in this area were all controlled by a large number of well-trained guards. Many robust Goblins of strange shapes, dressed in uniform dark red robes, were conducting sampling and investigation work.
"Sir, it's the same as before."
A Goblin, over two meters tall, emerged from the ruins and called out to a skinny Old Goblin in the crowd.
This Goblin was particularly burly, resembling a tiger standing on its hind legs. The moment he stepped out, the surrounding Goblins shuddered, and the weaker ones even dropped to their knees.
The imposing goblin carried a terrifying pressure about him, his LifE Radiance having reached the limit for third-level creatures.
Upon hearing this answer, the Old Goblin showed no superfluous expressions, as if he had anticipated this all along.
"Magic Nest Worms?"
The imposing goblin approached the Old Goblin and shook his head slightly.
"They've also been taken away."
The Old Goblin grunted a response, raised his hand, and took the imposing goblin away from the scene.
Outside the blockade line, a lavishly decorated, gigantic carriage stood quietly on the road. Four huge black horses, each over two meters tall at the shoulder, stood silently, their glossy coats gleaming like satin under the starlight.
The Old Goblin stepped onto the carriage, using the back of the imposing goblin. After climbing aboard, the imposing goblin moved to the front of the carriage, picked up his whip, and expertly snapped it.
"Sir, where are we headed?"
After a moment of silence within the carriage, the hoarse voice of the Old Goblin came through.
"To Golden Summit."
"Alright."
The imposing goblin responded cheerfully, then pulled out a map and began charting the route to the Golden Summit.
After all, this was a carriage; it couldn't travel as directly as an Airship could.
Inside the carriage, the Old Goblin's eyelids drooped, looking somewhat listless. Opposite him, behind a table, sat a tall, slender female Noble whose delicate features were as if painted on a canvas, sitting earnestly on a chair.
The Noble's expression was serious, her gaze resolute, and she wore a suit of Crystal Power Armor that sparkled faintly in the light.
By her demeanor, she seemed not so much a Noble as a warrior with firm convictions.
"Sir, why are we going to Golden Summit?" the female Noble asked.
The Old Goblin's voice was raspy, yet there was an underlying strength in it.
"Because that person has gone there."
"That person?"
The Old Goblin drew a map from the table's drawer and spread it out neatly on the table.
"This week alone, there have been twelve nest collapses, these Abyss Nests, large and small, all collapsed due to the exhaustion of Life Energy. And, the Magic Nest Worms of these nests have disappeared without a trace.
You know this, don't you?"
The female Noble nodded honestly.
"Then why ask about that person?" the Old Goblin said somewhat helplessly, "Oli, you can't just shut your brain off because you've put on Armor."
Her face greened with embarrassment, then she asked, "Then how did you come to the conclusion that he would go to Golden Summit?"
"Look at the map, Miss Oli. Connect the cities where the nests have collapsed and see for yourself."
Oli was startled and then marked the position of the twelve cities on the map. After connecting them, an almost perfectly straight line appeared on the map. If one added an arrow to the line, that arrow would point directly to the Golden Summit marked on the map.
"But why would that person go to Golden Summit?" Oli was puzzled.
"He's obviously looking for the Divine Palace," said the Old Goblin calmly, "What else? Is he going there on vacation?"
"Divine Palace?" Oli's confusion deepened, "Would such a powerful being really believe in myths? How could the Divine Palace possibly exist?"
The Old Goblin did not reply, steadily examining the mark of Golden Summit on the map.
"Whether it exists or not, he's got the wrong place. The World's Summit is not the Golden Summit."
...
Atop Golden Summit, Richard, clad in black robes, expanded his spiritual power once again.
This was the three hundred and forty-second time he had done so in the last three days.
The fierce Gang Wind swept past Richard, and at an altitude of 12,000 meters, the free-floating Wind Elements dominated the free elements in the air.
The Wind Element was the second most lively of the four major Elements, second only to the Fire Element. In an environment saturated with high concentrations of free-floating Wind Elements, the slightest disturbance could cause the Wind Elements to form winds as strong as null.
But these fierce winds were nothing more than a gentle breeze in Richard's presence.
"Still nothing. It seems that the conjecture of the World's Summit being the Golden Summit is incorrect."
Richard remained calm in the face of failure. If the Divine Palace could be found so easily, it would make no sense for it not to be contested by the two Divine Kings of both worlds. But as far as the records show, the Divine Kings of the two Royal Courts had not fought over the Divine Palace.
Richard took a map out of his pocket, which detailed the peaks and highlands of the world both large and small. As he pondered his next destination, a voice reached his ears.
Richard's brow furrowed ever so slightly; two life forms, their Life Radiance extremely vibrant, were rapidly approaching him.
Before long, two figures, one large and one small, landed on the summit of Golden Summit.
The imposing goblin looked around and scratched his head, turning to the Old Goblin at his side and said, "Master, it seems we're too late. That person has already left."
The Old Goblin did not respond to him but instead bowed respectfully towards the empty summit.
"I am the Great Shepherd from the Church of the Lord of Flesh, are you searching for the Divine Palace?"
