Wings of Fire in MHA

For a full month Carter and Cathleen followed the same routine, everyday they would have a large breakfast before running a half mile to the gym and work out for a few hours before running back and Carter enjoyed the time he spent with Cathleen as she was always pushing him to grow stronger and actually encouraged him to keep his wings and tail out so that he could get used to them, a week ago he had finally managed to fly a few feet off the ground and since then he had been practicing more to gain endurance and Cathleen had eagerly given him more demanding exercises in the gym that focused on his back muscles, even though his body ached every night he had to admit that she knew what she was doing, with all the exercise and the large meals that they shared he had several growth spurts and was now 5'5 not very tall but in a crowd of other children his age he would stand out as he was both taller than all of them and he had his wings out. His animus powers had also been expanded upon, taking inspiration from Cathleen's quirk 'New Order', he had a list in his head of several enchantments that he could apply to himself and others, he had also managed to upgrade his healing factor with his magic and constantly recovering from intense workouts, but sadly all good things must come to an end as it was time for Carter to start . . . SCHOOL!

Ok it wasn't all that bad Carter thought as the teacher settled down the class, "Now that you are all seated let me introduce myself, my name is Mr.Brown and I will be your 5th grade homeroom teacher" the man said as the class settled down "Now today there's not much planned so instead of doing work, we'll take turn introducing ourselves to the class, we'll start here at the front when its your turn, say your name,your quirk and what you want to be when you grow up, I'll start. My name is Mr.Brown, my quirk lets me grow my hair as long or as short as I want and in any style and I wanted to be a fireman when I was little." he said as the next student went and the next as Carter thought about what he would say, he had a bit of time though as he was seated in the back of the class at a round table with another boy and a girl who looked just as thrilled as him to have to speak in front of the class. He did enjoy listening to all the different quirks however as there were lots of interesting ones, one of them could hear twice as far as everyone else, another could stretch their arms out like rubber, and one girl could change the color of her body, everything from her skin to her hair to her eyes.

As they finally got to his table Carter saw that the other two weren't about to speak so he went first "Hi,my name is Carter Bate and my quirk is 'Dragon' and I want to be a hero like Star and Stripe when I grow up." he said as he stretched out his wings as the children looked at him with stars in their eyes, "Ah so that's why you have those wings, and that's a very good thing to be when you grow up, where do you want to go to school at?" Mr.Brown asked interested "To U.A." Carter said as he tucked his wings in and sat back down as the teacher nodded most children who aspired to be heros aimed for U.A as it was the best hero school in the world. The boy next to Carter stood up "My name is John and my quirk lets me summon things," he said as a pencil a stapler and a picture frame appeared in his hands "I want to be a soldier like my brother when I grow up." he said as he sat back down "That's a very useful quirk you got there John, and being a soldier is a great dream too since you will get to help keep our country safe from villains!" Mr.Brown said as he turned to the girl as she was the last to go "Your turn.". She stood up and introduced herself "My name is Abby and my quirk lets me summon and control water." she said as she opened her hand palm up and a little spout of water erupted and morphed into the shape of a cat then jumped onto the table and sat down right in between Carter and John, "I want to be a hero too when I grow up." she said as she sat back down and dispelled the cat which evaporated before them, "That's a cool quirk you got there, I look forward to seeing you take down the villains in the future." Mr.Brown said and started to tell the students about the rules and classes as the icebreaker was over, and despite his best effort Carter couldn't help but zone out but was saved by the bell as it was now time for lunch.

As he left the classroom and followed the other children to the lunchroom, he looked around with interest at all the different quirks that had caused mutations and physical alterations and wondered what had happened to cause humanity to change in such a way, he felt no mana nor aether in the world so he was quite confused on how most of the planet had powers. Reaching the lunch room he got his tray and food and sat down at a corner table that was empty as he didn't want to get no know any of the children, but to his surprise John and Abby came over and sat down with him. Neither of them said anything to the other and they ate in comfortable silence before the bell rang and they went to their next class.

Once the day was over and it was pickup time, Carter waited for a few minutes before Cathleen arrived and then they walked back home, she asked him plenty of questions about his day and he answered all of them while sharing his thoughts on how the school was. Once they reached home Cathleen went to the kitchen to start on dinner while Carter sat down at the table and filled out the coloring sheets that the teachers had sent home as 'homework' for the day, and by the time he was finished Cathleen appeared again with dinner and they ate and went to bed, happy with their day.

And it was as simple as that, despite having an obvious mutation quirk 5th grade was not very difficult for Carter, and despite not wanting to get close to anyone he found himself enjoying the quiet time he spent with John and Abigail as they grew up. By the time that they reached the 7th grade John and Abby had reached Carters height as the trio grew up and their quirks developed more. Something that did drive home the fact that her was in a new world was learning the history, several world wars and events that never happened on his original planet that made him wonder how many other variations of Earth their were out there and what made each one different. He didn't dwell on this however as Cathleen continued to push him to grow stronger and when he turned 13 started to spar with him as well saying that he would need to know how ti fight if he was going to be a hero in a world full of villains.

Eventually 9th grade arrived and was over and Carter,John and Abby were at a fast food place with golden arches that they had frequented for several years. As they ate they talked about their plans for the future and both John and Abigail were a little sad that their friend whom they had known for several years would be leaving them, "I know you want to go to U.A but you'll come back to visit us right?" Abby asked as they walked to a nearby park "I don't know how often I'll be able to but I will certainly try to, if not I'll call you guys or we can play some video games together." he said as John nodded, with Carter and Abby focused on being heroes John had been the one to keep them aware that they were still children and would always drag them to movies and other fun places, despite all three of them being quiet reserved children, John was the most outgoing having made a few friends other that Carter and Abby but still hung out with them more than anyone else, and that was how they spent the rest of their spring break, they went shopping for new phones that Carter paid for (U.S defense budget🇺🇸) and they went to several tourist places around the state before they had to take on the last stretch of school.

"And so when you leave this school and head out, I want you all to remember the people around you that had helped shape who you will be, Highschool can be an overwhelming experience but as long as you keep your friends close you'll make it through." Mr.Brown finished his speech to the 9th graders as Carter,John and Abby watched from their seats. As they grew up Mr.Brown had always been there and had always understood the quiet trio, and the school board had as well as he had gotten several promotions before becoming the principal of the districts junior high and was quite proud to see some of his former students in the audience. Since today was special Cathleen had been given a week's leave by the military to be with Carter, over the years as he grew more and more independant she had been at home less and less, but always tried to maintain contact, since it was his last day on junior high before he went to U.A she wanted to surprise him and so she had invited (without him knowing) his friends and their family over to the house that they had moved into a few years back, and had sent him to the store to get several things to buy time for them to get there under the guise that she would be in town in a few days.

When he opened the door Carter was surprised to see Cathleen there on the couch talking with John and Abby, hearing the door open she looked over "Hey kiddo, did ya miss me?" she said as he ran over to her and gave her a hug to the surprise of John and Abby who had almost never seen him laugh or smile for the several years they had known him, but Carter couldn't help himself. Despite not seeing her as often as when she first found him all covered in blood Cathleen had always been a role model for Carter, always there when he needed advice for a new enchantment or exercise to help him train, she was what had truly made this new world worth being in as even on the days he shut down and refused to communicate, she was always there with a huge smile on her face taking him around town or just being herself and waiting patiently for him to open up and tell her what bothered him.

"I missed you too." she said squeezing the breath out of him before letting go and looking at him, despite not being his mother she couldn't help but feel proud of Carter, he was now 6' and muscular (thanks to her) and had a quiet confidence that surprisingly never got him a girlfriend, but after she had met his two friends and gotten to know them a little, she figured out that all three of them were that way, they always looked out for each other and kept would be girlfriends/boyfriends away from themselves. After that they spent the evening together and Carter had the time of his life, there was plenty of food, his two best friends were there and he truly felt at peace, with some negotiating John and Abby had even been able to stay the night and the trio had stayed up playing different games both digital and physical before they passed out in the living room, each one on their own couch with Cathleen draping blankets over them after she had come down to check on the once things got quiet, and as she went to sleep she was glad knowing that the little dragon boy that had made a bloody entrance into her life was now starting to spread his wings and had even made a good pair of friends.

After that fun time Carter spent his summer training like never before, and Cathleen had even gotten an extended leave to help him get ready for the U.A entrance exam, she drilled combat drills and all sorts of knowledge into him, from Japanese hero law to their language and customs, and had pushed him so far that even his healing factor took a second to catch up, but it had been worth it and he was ready. One thing she hadn't expected however was for Carter to drop another bomb on her, "Once I get sufficiently strong I can unlock another dragon form." he had said blowing her mind, he hadn't explained much but rather pushed himself more and more saying that he was close to reaching that point until three months before the U.A exam he had suddenly froze and with a burst of fire he transformed right in front of her into a black dragon, he was massive with the top of his head reaching 16'10" high, his four legs were each the size of Cathleen in her civilian form with large claws that were as big as her forearm, and that was just the beginning, his tail was long nearly as big as he was, and his wings were massive and even folded she could still see the line of white scales that ran along where his wings met his back and as he unfurled his wings she saw that unlike before where they had just been midnight black, they now had several silver scales dotted around like stars in the night sky, going up she saw his large ebony black neck and body and saw the strong muscles beneath his scales coiled like a serpent ready to strike, and reaching his head she saw a pair of sturdy horns with a small line of spikes traveling down the length of his spine, and right next to his eyes on each side there were two small silver scales, like teardrops. He opened his eyes and she saw the dark purple that replaced the normal brown that she knew and tensed as he had never transformed as far as she knew but he just looked around in confusion.

Carter pov:

As he opened his eyes, Carter looked around and was surprised to be several feet higher than he was used to, looking down he saw not human legs but large reptilian feet with claws and raising one he flexed curiously, looking around he saw that his wings were massive and his tail had grown several feet in length and he now took up most of their backyard, looking down he saw Cathleen looking up at him tense, he didn't blame her though as he was now a massive dragon rather than a 15 year old boy but seeing that he was just as confused as she was she calmed down while Carter asked his system 'what just happened why am I a dragon now?"

'Due to the host reaching the 50% mark for this form the system triggered your dragon form and will do so everytime you chose a new form so that you can see how each form is different. Please choose your next dragon form.'

Taking all that in was a bit much after the system being silent for years so Carter carefully sat down as Cathleen walked over and even sitting he was still a few feet taller than her as his dragon body was just that big. "What's with the big scary dragon look?" she asked while circling him "This form is based on a Nightwing animus dragon named Darkstalker, my body just did this because its ready to change it seems." he told her as she snorted "Darkstalker, what a creepy name, had a nice ring to it I guess." she said as he nodded in agreement. Turning his attention back to the system he looked at all his options and seeing the message at the bottom he decided that he would just start from the top 'I choose Icewing.' he told the system.

As soon as he said that his body temperature dropped massively as his ebony black scales turned pale blue and white with his wings turning white as snow starting from the line along the edges of his spine, his tail tineed out and became whiplike with several spike growing along the end as the spike near his neck grew out and grew sharper like spears of pure ice, his body also grew leaner and taller with him now reaching 17'8" standing. His claws became serrated perfect for gripping ice, and his snout also thinned out as his eyes turned pale blue and with that he was now a massive ice dragon. He pulled up his system to see what had changed.

General pov:

Cathleen shivered a moved a few feet back, and watched in awe as Carter went from a large muscular 'Nightwing' as he called it to a even larger but more lean and regal white dragon, she could do without the cold that seemed to emanate from him however as she was used to the Texas and California heat, but she had to admit that his new form looked more regal. She noted that his claws now seemed serrated and that several new spikes had formed on the end of his tail and the ones on his neck had gotten bigger. Then she watched as he opened his mouth and took a deep breath, sensing danger she turning into her muscle for a made distance and he exhaled and what appeared to be sparkling smoke shot out from his mouth, but when it hit the ground she saw that everything it touched froze solid like they were encased in ice.

General Pov:

After he experimented some more Carter was quite pleased, he could switch freely between his Icewing and Nightwing forms, and if he did it while human his wings,tail and eyes would change along with his claws. He also found out that he could now breath fire and frost while human, but could only do fire while a Nightwing and ice while and Icewing but still it was plenty of progress and Cathleen eventually calmed down and then they experimented some more. By the time they had finished they had set out a new training regime for him that would focus more on his dragon side that his human side as he would use that a lot to take down to more violent and strong villains. All in all it was a good way for them to spend the next few months getting ready for the U.A entrance exam, and by the time he needed to board the plane to go to Japan he knew he was ready. 

As Carter waited for his group to be called to board, he was a little nervous as this would be the first time he would be leaving Cathleen and not the other way around, this was all internally however as even now he refused to show many if any emotions out in public. Cathleen had noticed as she always did however and had dragged him around the airport looking at all the shops and picking out things that he didn't need but she still bought him regardless. When it was time to go she gave him a crushing hug "I'm proud of you kiddo, go show those kids what a real hero looks like, and tell All Might I said hi." she said releasing him as he nodded and stepped onto the plane, he would have liked to fly to Japan himself but she had laughed in his face and told him just how many missiles to U.S would send his way the second he hit the sky and he had begrudgingly agreed to fly in a plane like a normal person. As he took his seat in the cabin he put on his seat belt and politely declined snacks when the flight attendant passed by. Seeing a screen in front of him he messed around with it before getting bored and by then the plane had taken off and he watched as they left the airport behind, 'I could have outran at least one of them' he thought still mad about now being able to fly there himself before he put on his head phones and listened to his music as the plane slowly climbed up to 35,000 feet and made its way to Tokyo International Airport.

A/N: hey sorry for the wait, was busy with another novel of mine and just got around to writing this, as of right now the canon is still intact, so midoriya is still All Might's successor but a few things will be changed you'll see ;P Go read my other novel 'Awakening in the Stars' if you like Halo, I'd skip the first 30 chapters though cuz they're kinda useless bc i just blew through them but its better after that trust. ok by
