Wings of Fire in MHA

Chapter 47: 47-Raining forest

"Dreams are windows to the spirit world." Thorn said as she lit another candle, the glow of the flames casting shadows along the walls of the barn. ""That's what our ancestors believed. A world from which everyone comes, and to which everyone must one day return."

Fone Bone stopped giving Thorn love eyes as he listened, I paid them little mind though as I cared little for this world and its superstitions, though I did still wonder about last nights dream.

"In the old times it was believed our ancestors could move through the spirit world and visit other people's dreams." Thorn sat the candle on the floor away from the hay. "Do you and gran'ma Ben believe that?" Fone Bone asked.

Thorn shook her head and said that Rose never liked to talk about dreams, especially the ones where she dreamed of dragons. Hearing that Fone Bone told her about how he saw a massive version of the red dragon head, and how the red dragon had told him about being Ishmael dispite Fone Bone never telling him his dream was about Moby Dick.

As they talked about the dragon and the hooded figure that wore Fone Bone's face in Thorns dream, I heard a noise outside and I slowly made my way over to the barn door, placing myself between it and Thorn.

Oblivious to this Fone Bone and Thorn were getting awfully close to the fact that Rose was hiding Thorns past from her before the barn door opened.

CREEAK

Standing in the barn, dripping wet was Gran'ma Ben.

"Granma? Are you alright?" Thorn asked and I stepped closer to Thorn, not liking the look Rose was giving her and the Bone. 'She heard them talking about their dreams' I realized as Rose glared at them for a moment before taking off back into the rain.

"What the heck was that about?" Fone Bone asked "She heard you talking about your dreams." I said as Thorn looked confused "Then why did she look so upset?" she asked "She probably knows who's been giving us nightmares, c'mon we got to get her!" He said as he and Thorn tried to go out but I stopped them.

"It is too dangerous to go out." I said not trusting Rose or the forest after what has been happening recently. "But we have to find Gran'ma Ben!" Thorn said "And get answers!" Fone Bone added.

"It's not safe. The forest is full of enemies." I told them but Thorn still tried to push past me. "I've been training with you." She said stubbornly "I can protect myself." I snorted at that "You know how to run, and survive by yourself. I have not taught you how to fight." I said as Thorn continued to glare at me still wanting to go.

"Hey Thorns plenty strong-" Fone started but I cut him off "Not the time Bone. You're out of your depth here." I said as Thorn tried to shove past me but I didn't move an inch.

"Why won't you let me go?" she asked "Your not ready." I said not wanting to have to go out in the rain and babysit. "Then let me prove I'm ready." she said and I thought about it for a moment before nodding, much to Thorns surprise.

"Go then." I said holding the barn door open. "Prove I haven't wasted my time teaching you." She looked at me for a moment before she ran out into the rain, Fone Bone right behind her.

KKRAK- BABOOM!!

The rain had only gotten stronger since they left the barn. Lightning lit up the forest as I followed behind Thorn and Fone Bone, close enough to help them if things went wrong but far enough that they couldn't find me. Plus I'd only be stepping in if their lives' were in danger so they kept pushing through the forest.

KRAAKLE!

"There she is!" Thorn said as they spotted Rose up ahead on the trail. "Gran'ma!" She called out not even bothering to hide as Fone Bone had the sense to keep an eye on their surroundings. "You scared us half to death! Are you ok?" she asked but Rose didn't answer, she just kept walking.

"Gran'ma what are you doin?" Thorn asked "Go home Thorn." Rose said as Thorn kept insisting that she go back with them, Fone Bone asked her how much she had heard about their dreams and that finally got her attention.

KA-BOOM!

"Everything . . . I heard everything." she said turning around to glare at him, before she snapped her head over to where I was watching. "You take my granddaughter back to the farmhouse where it is safe." she growled as I steppe out of the trees "And you start minding your own business Bone." she said but he didn't back down.

"I'm not being nosy! I've been having weird dreams too! How come your acting like this Gran'ma?" he said as he and Rose started to argue about the dragon again. I wanted to intervene but I noticed the noise of the forest had gone silent, though the rain continued.

KEERAAK BOOM!

"We need to go back." I said as Rose looked around. Off in the distance I saw little red dots moving about, Rose saw them too. "Rat creatures stay low." She hissed as she grabbed Fone Bone and Thorn by the hand and took off into the forest. I followed right behind them as I heard the sounds of footsteps in the forest around us.

After a few minutes of walking Rose led us up a rocky hill that had a small clearing of trees on top and we stopped and listened for moment. "They know we're here." I said and Rose nodded "Get ready with that power of yours, might be time to use it." she said as Thorn asked "Are you sure the rat creatures know where we are?" she said "Plus won't his fire not work with all this rain?" Fone added since I had yet to use my ice in front of anyone yet.

"They know we are here, it won't be long before they find us." Rose said as I spotted a rat creeping around. Fone Bone started with that damn dragon again and how it would save them, but I spoke up before Rose could start "Get down, they're close."

We crouched by a tree as I held my sword, ready to strike. "It's just one, probably a scout." Rose whispered as I stood up ready to take care of it before she dragged me back down. "NO!" She hissed "I'll deal with it, you keep them safe." she said and she was gone.

Thorn and Fone Bone opened their mouths to say something but I clamped my hands over their mouths, not giving them a chance. Rose was gone for several long minutes as lighting crackled above, the rain didn't show any signs of stopping as as scream was faintly heard over the sound of-

KRACK BOOM!

Rose came running back through the dark and crouched next to me as I let Thorn and Fone go. "This is bad the forest is full of rats. there's no hiding from this many, we'll have to outrun them." she said. I nodded and picked up Thorn and Rose picked up Fone, they tried to complain but I shut them down. "Shut up, of I'll leave you for the rats to fest upon."

They didn't complain after that as me and Rose raced through the forest, as we climbed a set of rocks the a rat burst from the dark teeth bared but Rose punched it in the face sending it tumbling down as Fone tried to shout "DRAGON! HE-" I slapped a hand over his mouth and sealed it shut with ice, the last thing we need was this idiot drawing more rats to us.

Reaching the top we hid behind a pile of bushes as I heard the sound of rat creatures moving through the clearing next to us. Fone bone and Thorn were smart enough to not make noise, but I could sense the rats slowly getting closer.

Peering over the lighting flash illuminated the rat that was face to face with me, without hesitation I trust forward stabbing my sword through its head as Rose jumped up ready to fight, before lighting flashed again and suddenly the rats were being chased off by the dragon.

krack KABOOM!!

Rose peered form behind the tree and stared down the dragon as it sat in the clearing watching us. Thorn finally found her voice as she spoke up "Gran'ma the dragon just save our lives! Leave him alone." Bold move considering Rose could probably backhand her to the moon but Rose didn't pay her any mind as she glared into the darkness.

KRAAAKKLE

The dragon was gone.

Sigh "I'm getting to old Carter." Rose said as her shoulders slumped, heavy with the weight of her past, and the rain to continued to pelt them. "You think the dragon will be there whenever you need him . . . " She said looking at Fone Bone, "Well he won't be, he wasn't always there for me." she said as we moved back towards the farm, Thorn and Fone Bone held hands speaking softly to each other as I walked with Rose, "You have to tell her, she needs to know." I said but Rose remained silent.
