Ch. 21
Chapter 21 - Let Me Blow on It for You
A cream-colored long dress wrapped around a curvaceous body, long hair coiled up, elegant and noble.
The thin hem of the dress rested on her legs, outlining their rounded, pillar-like contours. The afterglow of the setting sun shone on her fair face, adding a few faint blushes.
The corners of her eyes were already tilted up, and even that beauty mark seemed to exude a bit of danger.
Who else could it be but Luo Yuheng?
It was already dinnertime, but in the end, no one had shown up. Upon asking, she found out that her three sons, three daughters, and one son-in-law had all gathered at the small kitchen. Luo Yuheng felt very unhappy in her heart.
You group of people gather together but specifically exclude me. How outrageous.
When she arrived and saw the group eating and drinking with abandon, her mood became even more depressed. There's good food, yet you don't even know to call me. Three sons, three daughters, and I raised you by hand. And that son-in-law, have you forgotten who stood up for you when you were being bullied by the Song family?
Thinking like this, she became even sadder. She was about to cry, the inconsolable kind.
Heartless.
All of them are a bunch of heartless people.
She had originally wanted to give these heartless little bastards a good scolding, but then she heard Luo Caiyi's words, and for a moment, she didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Luo Caiyi was still unaware that danger was approaching. She lay lazily on the table, looking at the unfinished dry-fried beef in front of her, but her little tummy really couldn't fit anymore. Mother had said that if a child eats too much, their belly will burst... The more she thought about it, the more scared she felt. Her little mouth puckered, and she looked so aggrieved she was about to cry.
Then, bonk...
A flick landed on the head of the little little younger sister-in-law.
With that, Luo Caiyi could no longer be bothered with being scared. She covered the top of her head with one hand while looking up behind her:
"Mother? Ouch, what are you doing?"
Pfft!
Song Yan couldn't hold it in. Luckily, this wasn't the original Earth, otherwise the little little younger sister-in-law might have become the youngest 'hater' in history.
"What am I doing?" Luo Yuheng glared at her youngest daughter, looking as if she were frustrated that iron couldn't become steel.
"You damned girl, your skin is itching, isn't it? You dare to say just anything?"
Gossip is a fearful thing.
Although Luo Caiyi was only nine years old, if what she had just said were heard by outsiders, who knows what kind of stories it would be twisted into.
This world has never lacked for people with filthy minds.
Luo Yuheng herself was a rebellious person; she didn't care how the outside world judged her. But she was unwilling for her daughter to suffer these things as well. The malice of some people was far beyond what a little girl could bear.
The little girl's eyes blurred with tears. She had been hit, and harshly scolded. Luo Caiyi felt she hadn't done anything wrong, so she felt extremely aggrieved, and tears were about to fall. She stood up with puffed cheeks:
"I'm running away from home."
Saying this, she also pulled up Luo Qingyi who was beside her, as if this would give her a like-minded companion, completely ignoring how Luo Qingyi kept looking back at the pork ribs her second sister hadn't finished.
Luo Yuheng didn't mind: "Remember to come back at night."
"Oh.”
Song Yan almost burst out laughing. If you say this little sister-in-law is well-behaved, she runs away from home at the drop of a hat. If you say she's naughty, she still knows to come home on time when she runs away.
So, this should be a quantum superposition state between well-behaved and naughty?
Thinking this, he took out a plate from the side. On the plate was a variety of food. He had probably taken out a portion of each dish as he made it, and now it was a full plate.
"Your Highness, Mother-in-law, I saved this for you."
Luo Yuheng's face, which was originally a little sad, suddenly brightened up. Gleefully, she shot a somewhat smug glance at Luo Tianyi, Luo Tianshu, and the others. Her sons and daughters were all heartless; her son-in-law was still the best.
Soon, she became a little angry:
"Why are you calling me Mother-in-law? It's so formal. Call me Mother."
She seemed to be angry, but the upturned corners of her mouth could not be suppressed no matter what.
Song Yan's face turned slightly red... Actually, he had secretly saved that plate of food for himself.
"Mother."
Luo Yuheng responded with great satisfaction:
"Mm-hmm, so obedient. But cook less in the future. Don't they all say that a gentleman stays away from the kitchen? This isn't something you men should be doing."
Song Yan was stunned.
"'A gentleman, in regard to animals, having seen them alive, cannot bear to see them die; having heard their cries, cannot bear to eat their flesh. Therefore, a gentleman stays away from the kitchen.'"
"It's saying that a gentleman, upon seeing an animal alive, cannot bear for it to die, and upon hearing its cries, cannot bear to eat its flesh. It was Mencius advising King Xuan of Qi to implement a benevolent government. It has nothing to do with cooking, right?"
Luo Yuheng's little face turned red, and she quietly looked at Luo Tianshu:
"Is that so?"
"Brother-in-law is right. Advising the king to implement a benevolent government was the idea Mencius wanted to express. It has just been misinterpreted by some scholars." Luo Tianshu nodded, looking at Song Yan with some surprise:
"Brother-in-law, you have studied?"
Song Yan shook his head: "I only attended one day of elementary lessons."
"Then how do you know this piece from Mencius?"
"I occasionally heard my other brothers reciting it and probably just remembered," Song Yan said with a smile.
Luo Tianshu and Luo Tianquan, however, exchanged a glance, and both could see the surprise in the other's eyes. Just by occasionally hearing others recite it, and intermittently at that, he could remember the content of the article, and even understand its ideas without a teacher's guidance.
Could their brother-in-law be a genius?
Luo Yuheng's face was very red. How embarrassing.
Song Yan took out another plate of food and beckoned to Gu Banxia.
She hadn't expected the Young Master-in-law to have actually saved a portion for her as well. Holding the still-warm plate, Gu Banxia didn't know what kind of mood she was in. Perhaps that warmth traveled from her fingers to the tip of her heart, and her heart, which had been as still as an old well for many years, also rippled slightly.
The small kitchen became lively both inside and out. Even though Song Yan was cooking with all his might, he couldn't keep up with so many people eating. Fortunately, while cooking, he could sneak a few pieces into his mouth under the pretext of tasting, and gradually, he no longer felt hungry.
Before he knew it, the sky had already turned an ashen gray. Song Yan was still holding two plates of food, one was stir-fried tofu, the other was stir-fried vegetables with egg. Both were quite light dishes.
"Yan'er, you've made too much. Everyone is full," Luo Yuheng said.
She had also eaten to her heart's content. She really wanted to pat her belly like Luo Caiyi, but felt that the posture was truly indecent, especially in front of her son-in-law, so she gave up the idea.
"This is for Tianxuan. Tianxuan has consumption, so she shouldn't eat greasy food. I made two light dishes," Song Yan said.
Luo Yuheng nodded with considerable satisfaction. To still be thinking of his wife at a time like this, it seems that entrusting Tianxuan to Song Yan will surely lead to a loving and happy future.
Much better than that Prince Consort of hers.
Thinking this, the more Luo Yuheng looked at Song Yan, the more satisfied she became.
Then...
"Tianshu, Tianquan, Tianyang... are you three made of stone? Can't you see how tired your brother-in-law is? Have you no sense at all? Take these two dishes to your eldest sister, and say that her husband made them personally."
Being scolded for no reason, the three brothers felt quite aggrieved. But who could argue when it was their own mother? Even if they felt aggrieved, they had to endure it.
They hurried to Song Yan's side, and the three of them, carrying the two plates, ran off in a flash.
Watching the boisterous scene in front of him, Song Yan couldn't help but smile. This family was rather interesting... He leaned against the doorpost, watching quietly, smiling. He didn't know when, but that smile had turned a little sad.
He could feel that there was a membrane between him and them.
Not thick, very thin, invisible, intangible, yet it truly existed.
In his previous life, he was an orphan. His parents were gone when he was very young.
In this life, he finally had a mother and a father, but his father was cold-blooded, and his mother died early.
Having lived two lives, in the end, he was all alone!
For some unknown reason, his eyes felt a little sore. He blinked his eyelids rapidly, trying hard not to let something flow out.
Luo Yuheng, who had been watching Song Yan all along, silently put down her chopsticks and stood up. She walked towards Song Yan. Luo Tianyi, who had just been about to move, stopped in her tracks.
"Yan'er, what's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just got some sand in my eye..."
Luo Yuheng smiled gently: "Come, Mother will blow on it for you."
Saying this, she stood on her tiptoes and blew a few puffs of air towards Song Yan's eyes.
"Does it feel better now?"
"Mm, much better."
Luo Yuheng smiled gently, maintaining her tiptoe posture. Her fingers gently stroked Song Yan's head. That smile was full of acceptance and heartache:
"In the next couple of days, go and pay your respects to your mother."
"You're married now. Such a big event, she has to know about it in the end."
Song Yan pressed his lips together tightly and nodded.
Suddenly, Luo Yuheng turned to look at Luo Tianyi: "Tianyi, you'll go too when the time comes."
Luo Tianyi was stunned, dumbfounded, her small mouth slightly agape.
Luo Yuheng, however, didn't care about that. With her hands on her hips, she said:
"You have to keep a good eye on your brother-in-law."
"Such a good son-in-law of mine can't be snatched away by some fox spirit on the roadside.”
