Chapter 16: Settling In
The rhythmic sway of the carriage had become familiar, the gentle rocking accompanied by the steady sound of hooves striking the cobbled roads. Khione sat across from Bella, her posture relaxed but her mind alert as she listened to their escorts discuss the planned events for the coming days.
"As you know," Lady Evelyne began, hands folded neatly in her lap, "tomorrow will be dedicated to introductions. The banquet in the evening will serve as your official welcome to the Isles and an opportunity to meet the nobility and other influential figures."
Lord Aldric nodded in agreement. "On the third day, you will meet Her Majesty, Queen Nereia Voss. Afterward, negotiations will begin. Lady Briston, you are not required to attend every meeting, but it would be great if you were to appear at least two or three meetings. It will demonstrate respect for the Isles and strengthen your family's standing in these discussions."
Khione inclined her head. "Understood."
Evelyne smiled approvingly. "Good. Aside from the political aspects, we encourage you to explore our lands. The Isles of Azeroth are home to many fascinating places, as well as creatures you may find interesting. It would not be unusual for you to seek combat experience while you are here, should the opportunity arise."
Khione's interest piqued at that. The thought of testing herself against the beasts of the Isles was far more appealing than sitting through long-winded diplomatic meetings.
"We'll arrange guides if necessary," Aldric added.
"I'll keep that in mind," Khione replied.
The carriage slowed, signaling their arrival. As they pulled up to the manor that would serve as their residence, Khione took in its appearance. The building was grand, though not excessively ornate—its design was sleek, with smooth white stone walls and dark wooden accents. The structure was surrounded by a modest garden, the faint scent of salt lingering in the air from the nearby sea.
The moment they stepped out, a group of servants approached, bowing respectfully before swiftly collecting their luggage and carrying it inside.
Evelyne turned to them with a polite smile. "We will take our leave for now. Should you require anything, do not hesitate to send word."
Bella exchanged a few words of gratitude before the two representatives departed, leaving Khione and Bella at the entrance of the manor.
Bella turned to her with a casual shrug. "The rest of the day is yours. Just make sure you're prepared for the banquet tomorrow night."
Khione nodded, already planning to use the time for training or rest. Before she could say anything, Bella added, "I'll be heading out for a bit."
Khione narrowed her eyes slightly. "Where?"
Bella waved a hand dismissively. "Just making sure security is tight. Don't want any uninvited guests sneaking in."
That made sense. Khione gave a nod of acknowledgment and turned toward the manor. "I'll be in my room."
She ascended the staircase, moving through the halls until she reached the room assigned to her. The moment she entered, she locked the door behind her.
The journey had left her feeling sticky from the warm, humid air of the Isles. Without hesitation, she peeled off her travel clothes and stepped into the attached bathroom. The space was simple yet elegant, with a large mirror, a polished marble sink, and a spacious shower.
Turning the knobs, she let the water run, waiting until steam began to curl around the air before stepping in.
The sensation was instant relief. The warm water cascaded down her skin, washing away the fatigue of the day. She tilted her head back, letting it soak through her silver hair, the strands clinging to her shoulders.
As she reached for the soap, her thoughts wandered.
Tomorrow would be the banquet. Nobles, officials, and who knew who else would be there. The Isles had a different culture, and their people had their own power structures and rivalries. She would need to be careful with how she carried herself.
And then there was the queen.
Nereia Voss.
Khione had heard little about her beyond formal descriptions. Was she a ruler who commanded with authority, or one who relied on diplomacy? What kind of impression would she make?
Letting out a breath, Khione ran her fingers through her hair, rinsing out the remaining soap. She stayed under the water for a few moments longer, allowing herself to fully relax before finally stepping out.
After drying off, she changed into a loose, comfortable robe and exited the bathroom. There was still plenty of time before dinner, so she decided to unpack her belongings.
Hours passed as she neatly arranged her clothes and items in the room. She preferred organization—it made things easier. Just as she was folding the last piece of clothing, a knock came from the door.
She opened it to find a servant waiting outside. "Lady Briston, dinner has been prepared."
"Thank you," she said simply before making her way downstairs.
The dining hall was modest compared to the banquet halls of her home, but it carried a charm of its own. A long wooden table was set with plates of fresh seafood, vegetables, and bread. Bella was already seated, sipping from a glass.
Khione took her seat across from her as the last of the servants quietly exited, leaving them in privacy.
Taking a bite of the meal, Khione glanced at Bella. "So, about the security you mentioned earlier."
Bella raised a brow but continued eating. "What about it?"
Khione leaned forward slightly. "What exactly did you set up?"
Bella set her glass down. "Nothing too complex. A few magical barriers, alarm triggers in case anyone sneaks in. Enough to keep unwanted guests from slipping past without us noticing."
Khione nodded. "Reasonable."
Bella smirked. "You sound disappointed."
"Just making sure we aren't being watched already."
Bella chuckled. "Not yet, at least."
They continued their meal, exchanging light conversation before Khione eventually decided to retire for the night.
Back in her room, she changed into her nightwear and climbed into bed. The moment her head hit the pillow, exhaustion caught up to her.
She barely had time to think before she fell asleep.
