Chapter 81.2
I Want A Tamagoyaki Pan
Urgus shouted, clutching Magg who was about to reach for the plate. If Magg were left alone like this, he might end up eating everything by himself. It wasn’t a joke at all; that was just how Magg was. How much does he love his dashi? Once Yakk and Camille had finished tasting, they both held down Magg. In the meantime, Urgus took a bite. Finally, he presented the remaining tamagoyaki on the plate to Magg. … It seemed Uncle Hallow had no intention of eating, so it was fine.
The toasted aroma of sesame oil and the gently flavored dashi and soy sauce were indescribably delicious. The tamagoyaki was seasoned with salt and pepper and butter, giving it a different impression altogether. They thought to themselves how amazing eggs are. There are infinite possibilities with egg dishes.
Since it was cut into six pieces, that meant Magg could only eat two pieces. However, despite having eaten two, Magg was still staring intently at Yuuri, seemingly unsatisfied. Urgus lightly tapped Magg on the head, saying not to demand a full stomach for tasting, but Magg merely looked up at him with a troubled expression and said nothing.
“Okay, I’ll cook some more, so just wait a bit.”
After washing the used bowl, Yuuri started on the next tamagoyaki. Since the seasoning was different, it was better to change the bowl or wash it. The tamagoyaki he began to cook was simply seasoned with salt. He used sesame oil to finish it off nicely. To avoid making it too spicy, it was lightly flavored with salt.
Next, he made a tamagoyaki seasoned with sugar, and cooked in olive oil. While this might feel somewhat out of place as a side dish, the sweet tamagoyaki is delicious in its own right. Sometimes, the tamagoyaki served at sushi restaurants is this sweet type.
Now that three types of tamagoyaki were prepared, it seemed the apprentices who tasted them had divided preferences. Urgus preferred the dashi and soy sauce, Camille liked the sugar, and Yakk chose salt. Camille, who received a reaction like, “Is a sweet dish really a side?” replied with a sparkling smile, “It’s delicious, so it’s not a problem.” With an appearance that suggested he could easily pass for a scion of a good family if he stayed silent, it felt like a different world for him.
As for Magg…
“… Just dashi.”
“… Huh? You want me to cook it with just dashi?”
“Affirmative.”
He was pleading with Yuuri to cook a tamagoyaki using only dashi, not dashi plus soy sauce. The apprentices were exasperated at how unyielding he was, but Magg didn’t mind at all. Yuuri also didn’t seem to care much. As per Magg’s request, he cooked a dashi + chicken stock powder tamagoyaki using sesame oil. When they tasted it, it was surprisingly delicious. The faith of the dashi believers was fearsome.
“You really have a strange skill when it comes to dashi, don’t you?”
“No.”
“I know you don’t.”
With eyes that seemed to say there’s no way, Urgus grumbled, “Shut up.” Just then, Camille and Yakk reached for the dashi-only tamagoyaki from behind the two. Since it was a taste test, Magg didn’t interfere. … He didn’t, but it was endearing that he followed their movements with his eyes a little.
While Yuuri was tidying up, ignoring the noisy apprentices, Hallow opened his mouth with a truly happy laugh. In fact, this uncle was having a great time.
“Tamagoyakis can be arranged in various ways, can’t they?”
“Yes, seasoning is a matter of personal preference. Also, you can put something inside them, too!”
“Inside?”
“You can place boiled spinach or komatsuna in the middle, or add chopped green onions to the eggs beforehand.”
Nodding along, Hallow understood as he smiled at Yuuri. Surely, when he returned home, he would tell his wife about the methods of arrangement. tamagoyakis, too, evolved into various dishes with each household’s unique flavor.
(…Let’s keep quiet about the existence of dashi-maki tamago.)
Watching Magg, who was overjoyed with the dashi-flavored tamagoyaki, Yuuri thought. If he were to tell Magg at this moment about the fluffy tamagoyaki called dashi-maki tamago, which uses dashi broth to flavor the eggs, Magg would undoubtedly jump at the chance. Dashi-maki tamago wasn’t bad at all, but today he was in the mood for just a tamagoyaki.
Meanwhile, the tamagoyaki pan quietly spread among the wives, and the dish known as the tamagoyaki began to become popular.
