Chapter 78.2
Orc And Bean Sprout Steam For A Meal
He muttered to himself quietly, which was understandable. This Orc and bean sprout steamed dish, with its strangely appetizing smell, was, to be blunt, something Yuuri wanted to enjoy as a rice bowl. Sure, it could be eaten as a side dish, but if you poured the soup over white rice, it would be dangerously addictive.
…In fact, when he made it at the hideout, he hadn’t yet gotten the others used to eating rice, but he pushed them with, “Rice tastes way better than bread, just trust me and put it on top of the rice and eat it together.” The result? All the white rice was wiped out. It was Yuuri’s defeat, as he hadn’t quite grasped the insatiable appetites of the growing boys and girls. He fondly remembered rushing to make more white rice with a quick-cooking method.
Well, let’s set those memories aside for now. Anyway, everything was ready. He could see people starting to gather for the food distribution. First, they’d ask if the person wanted bread or rice before serving them. If they chose bread, the dish would be served on a large plate alongside the steamed Orc and bean sprouts. If they chose rice, it would be served as a rice bowl. This method required only one dish, making cleanup easier.
“So, aren’t you going to help distribute the food?”
“Huh? I’m fine just working in the background.”
Yuuri was busy cleaning up behind the women handing out the food, washing dishes, and picking up trash, all while Rooks worked just as diligently at his feet. Yuuri, despite being a major contributor to this month’s meal distribution, was perfectly content staying behind the scenes and enjoying being a support role.
The innkeeper lady smirked in mild exasperation, though she seemed to understand. She knew Yuuri didn’t like standing out and preferred his ordinary, peaceful life. …Though, she did wonder how he could maintain such a lifestyle while being part of an adventurer’s beginner training clan. Oddly enough, life in the Scarlet Lynx was pretty peaceful.
“What the…? Rice tastes amazing with this!”
“No, even with bread, it’s delicious!”
The crowd of people eating was buzzing, but Yuuri paid no mind. The rule for this meal distribution was that everyone could only have one serving, so no seconds. Some people who had chosen bread were looking enviously at the rice-lovers, who were raving about how amazing it was. But, they’d just have to accept it—after all, they had made their choice.
Not that the dish didn’t go well with bread; it actually wasn’t bad at all. Today’s bread was a simple roll, which didn’t interfere with the flavors of the dish. It seemed that even with bread, the meal was quite enjoyable. Images of katsu sandwiches, grilled meat sandwiches, and yakisoba bread floated through Yuuri’s mind before fading away. He figured it was somewhat along those lines.
“Kyuu.”
“Hmm? What’s up, Roo-chan?”
“Kyukyu?”
“Oh, you’re going to clean the pot for me?”
“Kyu!”
“Well then, please do! It’ll make washing it so much easier.”
“Kyuui!”
Rooks, as if to say, “Leave it to me,” bounced lightly and then enveloped the pot. Yuuri could see the pot rolling around inside Rooks’s body. Some people looked startled, but Yuuri just smiled, watching the scene unfold.
After all, the Orc fat and the sesame oil from the seasoning had stuck to the pot, making it difficult to clean. Even with hot water, removing the grease would be a challenge. So, if Rooks was offering to help, Yuuri saw no reason not to take advantage of it.
…Aroru, who would normally chime in with a snide remark like, “Do you even know what a summoned beast is?” wasn’t around today. If she had been, she probably would’ve hit Yuuri on the head and given him a thorough lecture on what a summoned beast was supposed to be.
And so, Yuuri continued focusing on cleanup. Occasionally, passersby, unfamiliar with the sight, would be startled to see a boy in an apron wandering around with a slime clinging to his feet. But Yuuri himself didn’t care, and those around him, already used to the sight, didn’t care either.
Incidentally, when some members of the hideout came to check on things and casually said, “Let’s have this for dinner!” the evening’s menu was swiftly and predictably changed.
