Chapter 287: Chapter 287: A Smooth Raid
The operation officially commenced at 1200 after the strategic meeting concluded.
As the vanguard, He Kui and Elina led the way in their Strike units, while Edward's land-based squad of Calamity, Ginn, and Dagger units proceeded through the forest on foot.
"The speed of these Ginn units is unreal," Edward marveled, watching them glide across the forest floor like they were on rollerblades.
"That's the latest tech from Director He," the squad leader replied proudly.
"Director He, huh?" Edward's gaze softened with a hint of envy. If only someone of his talent were in South America—their situation might be vastly different. Then again, someone of He Kui's caliber wouldn't remain in South America long; he'd either be poached or assassinated.
Shaking off the thought, Edward switched his comms to the aerial units above. "A, we're nearing the enemy position. The success of this ambush is in your hands."
"Understood," He Kui responded nonchalantly, unbothered by the chatter about him.
Familiar with the attention, he knew that he was a recognized name among elite pilots and high-ranking officials worldwide. The commotion he would cause if he landed on Earth in person would be unimaginable.
"A…" Elina's voice, filled with a mix of nervousness and excitement, crackled through the private comms.
"Don't worry; I'll handle it. Trust me, the forest won't be harmed." He Kui could understand Elina's attachment to the forest, even if he didn't entirely share her sentiments.
"...Thank you," she replied, relieved.
"No problem. Just focus on covering me."
With that, He Kui's Strike accelerated, quickly distancing itself from the MS units on the ground, leaving a faint trail in the sky.
After some time, He Kui approached the enemy encampment from above. He kept an eye on two screens: one showing the view from his Strike, and the other streaming the surveillance footage from the black bird. Based on the data, he launched six missiles from above the cloud cover without even needing a direct visual on the target.
The missiles streaked toward their targets, two aimed at the command center and the other four locked onto inactive Strike units. Flames erupted as explosions rocked the camp, though the sandy terrain absorbed most of the fire, sparing the nearby forest.
Chaos erupted within the Blue Cosmos camp as soldiers scrambled. Some tried to salvage undamaged mechs, while others broke into scattered groups, fleeing into the forest.
"Hey! Sosyth! Buy us some time!" One of the high-ranking officers, who had narrowly escaped the command center blast, shouted into his comms as he saw the slight Sosyth boarding his Buster Dagger.
"The pilot's definitely an adjusted human. Attack with everything you've got. It doesn't matter if you die."
"Yes, sir." Sosyth's hollow eyes remained unfazed. Mechanically, he acknowledged the order and began firing at He Kui with his long sword—a faster model of the Dagger.
Meanwhile, the golden-haired beauty nicknamed "White Whale" also boarded her Forbidden.
"He's behind us," He Kui said to White Whale after establishing a comm link mid-flight.
"...Thank you." White Whale replied, charging in the direction He Kui indicated. She didn't know how He Kui was able to target enemies with such precision despite the presence of a neutron jammer, but the fact remained that he hadn't targeted her.
"No need for thanks. Just have a proper talk with him—no need to get rough," He Kui joked, rolling his Strike to dodge the beam shots from Sosyth's Buster Dagger.
"Sosyth?" He Kui called out to the brown-hued Dagger unit behind him.
Silence. Instead of responding, Sosyth continued to fire beams at him.
As He Kui ascended, the beams followed his trajectory but failed to connect. Sosyth, likely not at his peak, was performing at a barely elite red-shirt level.
"Sosyth, don't you want to know why you're ordered to protect Naturals?" He Kui continued. "I know about your existence, and I can help you find the answers."
"Answers?"
Finally, a response from Sosyth.
"Yes, answers."
"Consider it. If you want those answers, don't self-destruct."
He Kui needed a capable subordinate in the field, and Sosyth, with some gene modifications via nanobots, could serve as a useful test subject. Although Sosyth's restrictions on attacking Naturals were a drawback, his potential value outweighed the limitations.
With that, He Kui's Strike descended toward the Buster Dagger in a dive. Like a blue predator descending from the heavens, he unleashed a barrage of bullets from his machine guns, which pelted Sosyth's Dagger like a storm. The intense barrage shattered the Dagger's hands and head sensors, rendering its radar and targeting systems useless.
Deprived of Phase Shift armor and hastily constructed for Sosyth's use, the Dagger crumpled under the assault.
"Don't… self-destruct?" Sosyth muttered, staring blankly at the self-destruct code that appeared on his screen. For the first time, a faint glimmer of something akin to clarity appeared in his eyes.
The other Blue Cosmos soldiers were too preoccupied to notice Sosyth's hesitation. The sight of He Kui's blue Strike descending upon them had thrown them into disarray.
"Die, you damn Coordinator!" A Dagger pilot, his voice quivering with fear, fired beam shots at He Kui in rapid succession.
The green beams skimmed past He Kui's Strike, leaving slight scorch marks but failing to impede his dive.
"How… how is he dodging everything?" the soldier stammered, frozen in disbelief as He Kui's shots tore into his cockpit, cutting off his comms in a burst of static.
The Blue Cosmos soldiers' panic had already compromised their aim. Without their machines' auto-aim features, they could barely keep their rifles steady, let alone hope for accurate shots.
Realizing there was no hope for victory, the remaining Daggers scattered in a desperate attempt to flee.
"It's too late," He Kui muttered. Just then, four Ginn units burst from the trees behind him.
"They're all yours. And don't kill the brown Dagger—I still need him."
"Understood!" With a collective shout, the four Ginn pilots, who had been stifling their frustrations over the climate and their squad leader's performance, charged after the fleeing Daggers with fierce determination.
