Chapter 34: Fifty-Fifty (Part 2)
Fenris nodded, "Bishop Rocky, we want to know if you are still okay?"
With just one sentence, Rocky's eyelids twitched, "What do you mean by 'am I still okay', when was I ever not okay?!"
"I didn't phrase it accurately. What I meant to ask is, how confident are you in taking on that Seven-Tone Player now?"
Rocky glanced sideways at Fenris, thought for a moment, and held back the urge to curse.
What do you mean by 'how confident am I in taking him on'?
If I really was, would I be in this state right now?!
"Fifty-fifty, I'd say." Rocky tried to maintain his composure, "If we really fought, it's likely both sides would end up wounded, but I don't want to get into such a scuffle with that guy, you understand?"
"Understood." Fenris nodded slightly, "Rest assured, Bishop Rocky, we won't let you fight alone again."
Not let me fight alone again, which means still having to fight.
Rocky's remaining thumb on his right hand twitched involuntarily.
To be honest, if possible, he really didn't want to mess with the Tongue again, especially since the Tongue already knew his identity. Pushing him to desperation could lead to mutual destruction, couldn't it?
But it's impossible to ignore the Tongue completely. As Fenris said, if the Tongue and that Taboo Scholar actually manage to develop something, the ones to suffer would not be just one or two people.
This left Rocky feeling caught between a rock and a hard place, a sense of unease like being held in the palm of someone's hand, not daring to move, yet unable to stay still.
So he wanted to see what Fenris intended to do.
"Though we haven't captured any information on Edwin in the past few days, I believe they haven't left this small town yet," Fenris said, "And the reason he's quiet now is likely because that Seven-Tone Player is also injured, unable to protect him for the time being. This indirectly confirms the considerable damage Bishop Rocky dealt to that Seven-Tone Player."
Upon hearing this, Mina couldn't help but take a glance at Rocky.
She knew that Mr. Tongue had three Corpse Pieces, and yet Rocky, with only one Corpse Piece, not only retreated safely from the fierce battle with the Tongue (losing only four insignificant fingers) but also caused substantial damage to the opponent, which indeed surprised Mina.
Is Bishop Rocky stronger than he appears, or is Mr. Tongue not as powerful as expected?
Or perhaps, is Mr. Tongue's body breaking down under the strain of three Corpse Pieces?
The side effects of Corpse Pieces are well known. Although major Churches have methods to alleviate these effects, they can at most alleviate one.
And three Corpse Pieces... Is there really any room for alleviation?
He is not Visas himself.
Regarding this point, Rocky had also pondered, as he had personally witnessed the terrifying sight of Hewinia's flesh nearly detaching from the bones. He couldn't fathom what poison in the world could cause such a state, so naturally, he attributed it to the side effects of the Corpse Piece.
Thinking this way, even if he doesn't make a move, that Yin Yang Man probably wouldn't live long either, would he?
"Mr. Fenris." Mina's words brought Rocky out of his thoughts, "You haven't yet told us what exactly the Taboo Scholar wants to do, I mean specifically, and why the Seven-Tone Player is helping him?"
"It's still about that knowledge," Fenris said, "Edwin has always been striving to fully decrypt and bring that knowledge into reality, but due to the presence of the Divine Oath Mark, he hasn't been able to complete this step. However, the Divine Oath Mark isn't all-powerful; there's only one way to evade its watch."
"The power of Visas?"
"Yes." Fenris nodded, "Edwin can construct an array that evades the Divine Oath Mark using Visas' power, thus achieving his goal within the array."
"So that's why he's tied up with that Seven-Tone Player; naturally, a Seven-Tone Player possessing Visas Corpse Pieces has Visas' power." Mina nodded slightly, "Then why haven't they started yet?"
"I suspect it's because the array would significantly deplete Visas' power, so the Seven-Tone Player isn't ready yet," Fenris said, "We still have a chance to nip this great threat in the bud. If we let him succeed, then..."
"Then what?"
"Who knows?" Fenris shrugged, "Anything's possible, either he becomes Visas, or Visas' secrets are useless to him."
"So the upper limit is world destruction, and the lower limit is nothing happens, right?" Rocky looked coldly at Fenris.
"The unknown is the greatest fear; even with a one percent chance, we can't just stand by." Fenris smiled, "We've discussed this before, haven't we, Bishop Rocky."
Rocky snorted, saying nothing more.
"Neither the Taboo Scholar nor the Seven-Tone Player can be left unattended," Mina said, "Since they're together, let's solve it together."
"Solve it together?" Rocky's tone grew colder, "Are you going to solve it? Your teacher hasn't even taken action, just expecting me to lead the charge?"
Rocky's tone, two degrees colder than before, confirmed to Mina that he was indeed targeting her, leaving Mina feeling a bit helpless.
"Of course not." Mina shook her head, "I will take action, and so will my teacher."
"Oh?" Rocky raised an eyebrow, "Mr. Isaiah is coming here too?"
"No, my teacher won't leave Nameless Town."
"Then what the hell are you talking about?" Upon hearing that Isaiah wasn't even planning to budge, Rocky couldn't help but curse, "Staying put in Nameless Town, what can he do, provide us with moral support?"
Mina pretended not to hear Rocky's curses and calmly said, "My teacher will make preparations in Nameless Town."
"What preparations?"
"Preparations to simultaneously kill the Taboo Scholar and the Seven-Tone Player."
Rocky immediately furrowed his brow.
"In two days, Nameless Town will greet the 'Innocent Night'," Mina said before Rocky could question, "Innocent Night is when star power is most abundant, and Star Relic Mages are at their strongest. If the reception array is set up in advance, the power becomes limitless. By then, neither the Seven-Tone Player nor the Taboo Scholar could be a match for my teacher."
...Innocent Night.
As the Bishop of Rhein, Rocky naturally understood what Innocent Night was and knew that Star Relic Church's Isaiah was the most powerful Star Relic Mage in a century.
If he made a move during Innocent Night, there indeed was a chance to kill off the Tongue, especially if he joined in.
Thinking about this, a glimmer of light appeared in Rocky's eyes.
His previous dilemma was whether to help the Tongue kill the Hand Eye or help the Hand Eye kill Ulu.
For him, the difficulty of this choice was no less than when as a child, the wrinkled old Priest smiled at him, asking if he planned to be on top or bottom that night.
And now, a third path had appeared.
If Isaiah, a pure outsider, were to act, wouldn't all prior concerns be unnecessary?
Is there really such a good thing?
Thinking about this, Rocky found Mina much more agreeable.
"So our task is to lure these two guys to Isaiah?" Rocky suppressed his inner excitement and feigned calmness, "Is there a specific plan?"
But Mina saw through his mind.
Indeed, he's taken the bait.
Mina thought.
This guy probably never imagined that the real target of my teacher was actually him.
Mina smiled slightly.
"Of course."
