Whispers of the Jade Saber

Chapter 22: Chapter 22: A Bargain in Blood and Ice

I. The Woman Who Returned from Fire

Lady Ruqin stood without armor, yet the space around her bowed in tension.

She had once been known as the Whisper Strategist—a woman who plotted battles before swords were drawn, who made her enemies bleed with silence.

Now she stood alone, her veil lifted, revealing a pale face lined with old burn scars. Her red robes were tattered. Her soul signature—fractured. A broken cultivator, yet still far from powerless.

Lin Feng spoke first.

"I watched you disappear in the Cradle's collapse. You survived?"

"I was meant to," she said simply. "But not to serve Lin Xun."

Tian Mian narrowed his eyes. "You followed him through flame and war."

"And I died for it," she replied, lowering herself onto the earth, legs crossed. "But I saw the truth before the end. The Mirror Sect didn't want peace. They wanted perfection. A flawless world that forgot suffering—and forgot choice."

She placed a blood-forged pendant between them.

"The Crimson Oath Core," she said. "A fragment of the Obsidian Lens, untouched by corruption. It holds visions not yet seen."

II. The Prophecy of the Third Flame

She unraveled a scroll of gold-inked silk. Time had burned the edges, but the center remained legible. Tian Mian, eyes glowing with the Remembrance Root's pulse, translated softly:

> "When Soul Echo rises in twin harmony,

And Mirror shatters by its own hand,

The Third Flame shall awaken—

Not forged, nor stolen, but inherited."

> "He who walks with forgotten fire shall be tested by shadowed light.

She who holds frost must suffer flame.

The Crimson Oath will lead… or betray."

The silence after was crushing.

Jun Feilan leaned on her spear. "You really like riddles."

"It's not poetry," Liang Yue said, voice distant. "It's a path."

Lady Ruqin placed the pendant in Liang Yue's hands.

> "It will not kill you. But it will force you to remember your darkest truth—and decide whether to carry it."

Liang Yue looked to Lin Feng.

His voice was quiet. "You don't have to do this."

She curled her fingers around it.

> "I already have."

III. Nightfall Training – Echoes of the Self

That night, as stars pierced the sky like memory needles, Lin Feng trained alone in the mirror pool near the Moon Tower.

He drew the Ashen Saber and channeled his Soul Echo.

Two flame silhouettes emerged:

One: his younger self, eyes wide with naive hope.

Two: his older self, cold-eyed, saber cracked, bleeding regret.

They circled him like ghosts.

Tian Mian stood at a distance. "Soul Echo isn't a realm. It's a trial. Until your past and your future agree on who you are—you will fracture."

The two projections attacked him simultaneously—one reckless and explosive, the other surgical and cold. Lin Feng blocked one, then the other. But he couldn't attack back.

Each time he tried to strike, guilt slowed him.

"I don't know who I am anymore."

Tian Mian answered, "Then become someone worth remembering."

IV. Liang Yue's Secret Frost

Deep in the glade beneath moonlight, Liang Yue sat alone.

The Crimson Oath Core pulsed on the stone in front of her. Her fingers bled from frostbite. She had woven her own core's lotus essence into the artifact—forcing it to accept her.

"No one has ever formed a dual-core on opposing elements without exploding," she muttered.

"But I'm not just anyone."

She inhaled.

And forced the core into her body.

It pierced her second dantian—below her heart. Fire screamed through her veins, crashing against frost.

Visions blurred her senses:

Her father falling.

Her mother frozen in time.

Herself standing above Lin Feng's grave.

She screamed, but no sound escaped.

Then—silence.

Her breath returned.

She had survived.

She stood slowly.

Eyes glowing with pale frost and crimson flame.

V. Morning Conversations

Jun Feilan approached Liang Yue the next morning, catching her washing blood from her palms.

"You alright?"

"I'm fine," Liang Yue said too quickly.

Jun stared, then leaned her spear against a rock and sat. "You're carrying something. Feels… heavier."

Liang Yue smiled faintly. "Aren't we all?"

Jun nodded. "Just don't carry it alone. Not with that man of yours watching you like you're the only star in his sky."

Liang Yue chuckled softly.

Then turned serious. "Do you ever wonder if peace is possible?"

Feilan took a long breath.

"Not anymore. But I'll fight beside the ones who do."

VI. The Firebird Descends

At midday, the earth trembled.

Tian Mian's Remembrance Root twitched violently. He spun toward the east. "Something's coming."

Smoke curled across the horizon—not rising, but descending from the sky.

Then a shriek tore the clouds open.

A phoenix, but wrong. Not reborn of fire—but born of consumed memory, wings of scorched light and bleeding shadow.

Atop it stood a masked figure, robes like tattered banners, aura coiled and immense.

Lin Feng stepped forward, saber drawn.

The figure spoke—not with lips, but with voice-inside-memory.

> "Flamekeeper. You walk the wrong flame. The Third Fire is not yours to inherit."

Yan Zhen whispered, "That's not a cultivator…"

Tian Mian's face drained of color.

> "That's a Flame Ascendant. An ancient soul fragment… thought extinct. They were born from the first Ashen Flame war. He shouldn't exist."

The phoenix dived, talons dripping with black light.

Everyone scattered—

Except Lin Feng, who stepped forward, saber glowing.

The Ascendant laughed.

> "Let's test your memory."

---

A Blade Shatters Time

The phoenix slammed into the earth, carving a crater into the ruins. Flame and memory exploded outward like a dying sun.

The Ashen Saber met the blast—

But cracked.

Lin Feng flew back, blood trailing from his mouth.

Liang Yue screamed, frost bursting from her fists.

The Flame Ascendant landed, mask gleaming.

"Next time," he whispered, "I'll come for her."

And vanished into smoke.

Lin Feng sat up, eyes wide.

The Ashen Saber lay in pieces beside him.

The fire inside it—

Extinguished.
