Whispers of the forgotten

Chapter 30: Chapter 29: A Revelation and an Unexpected Invitation

Life returned to its usual rhythm for Morpheus, but his mind was far from calm. He couldn't stop thinking about Galdeor, the killer, and the question that haunted him: why had Galdeor chosen him?

As he replayed the events in his head, the truth suddenly became clear. Galdeor's final victim, representing the sin of envy, was none other than Galdeor himself.

Morpheus thought aloud:

"We were the same, sharing the same talent and potential. But our fates diverged. He was a noble who became a criminal and heretic, while I, a commoner, rose to prominence as a detective. Galdeor wasn't just a killer—he was another victim of destiny."

The Cardinal's Visit

The scene shifted to Morpheus and Germain, engaged in their usual work, discussing a new case. Suddenly, the door opened, and Cardinal Ivar entered the room with his usual air of authority.

Morpheus stood up quickly and greeted the cardinal respectfully, though confusion flickered in his eyes.

The cardinal spoke in a calm, commanding voice:

"My condolences for your loss, Morpheus. And congratulations on solving the case of Galdeor. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed."

Before Morpheus could respond, Germain interrupted, his tone slightly irritated:

"Why are you here, Cardinal?"

The cardinal smiled, unfazed.

"I am here to personally invite Morpheus to a special event: the anointing ceremony of my daughter, Rosemar, as the Sacred Daughter of the Church of Eternal Hope."

Morpheus blinked in surprise, unsure of what to say. The cardinal continued:

"Of course, the decision is yours. You are free to decline if you wish."

With that, the cardinal turned and left, leaving an awkward silence in his wake.

The Mystery of Rosemar

After the cardinal's departure, Morpheus turned to Germain, still baffled.

"Why is his daughter being anointed? What makes her so special?"

Germain's expression turned serious as he explained:

"Rosemar is no ordinary girl. She has been blessed by one of the Eldrians—the higher beings. And not just any Eldrian, but the most enigmatic of them all: the Mother of All Known."

Morpheus's eyes widened in disbelief.

"The Mother of All Known? Isn't that... the most mysterious of all the Eldrians? The one said to control time, space, and even destiny itself?"

Germain nodded gravely.

"Yes. According to rumors, Rosemar has been given an extraordinary gift. They say she can see anything—any place, any time—just by looking. Some even speculate that if she reaches the eighth rank, she might be able to see the threads of destiny itself."

Morpheus frowned, deep in thought.

"And why would the cardinal invite me to this ceremony?"

Germain let out a mocking laugh.

"Oh, Morpheus, you really are clueless. The cardinal has invited all the most promising young talents—most of them nobles. But you, Morpheus, are special. You're a commoner whose talent has surpassed them all."

A Comedic Twist: Morpheus and the Suit

Germain suddenly grinned mischievously.

"You do realize you can't show up to the ceremony looking like that, right?"

Morpheus looked down at his worn-out coat, stained with coffee and dust.

"What's wrong with this? It's... functional."

Germain sighed dramatically, shaking his head.

"You're hopeless. Come on, I'm taking you to my tailor. You need a proper suit."

Before Morpheus could protest, Germain dragged him to an opulent tailor shop, where everything sparkled with wealth and refinement.

Morpheus gawked at his surroundings.

"Germain, how are you... this rich?"

Germain smirked, clearly enjoying Morpheus's surprise.

"I'm the Chief Investigator, of course. Did you think this position came without its perks?"

Before Morpheus could respond, Germain playfully smacked the back of his head.

"Now stop gawking and stand still. The tailor needs to measure you."

Morpheus stood awkwardly as the tailor began wrapping him in measuring tape, clearly uncomfortable.

"This feels weird. Like I'm some kind of mannequin," he muttered.

Germain chuckled, watching the scene with amusement.

"Don't worry. By the end of this, you'll look like a proper noble. Even if, deep down, you're still just a clueless commoner."

Morpheus rolled his eyes.

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, oh mighty Chief Investigator."

Germain smirked and replied:

"That's what I'm here for."
