Chapter 152: Lighting a Fire to the Iris Flower
Iris Kingdom, City of Light.
This is the capital of the Iris Kingdom.
If someone doesn't understand the history of the Iris Flower, they might find this name a bit hard to comprehend—it's a place filled with the nocturnal Sons of the Moon, and a bunch of assassins operating in the shadows, yet the capital is called this name.
——One must wonder, where is the light?
But in reality, the origin of this name is rather ironic—it is precisely the existence of the Sons of the Moon and the Hawkeye Organization that leads to the excessively high crime rate in the capital.
Back then, the Royal Family had not been murdered, and the Sons of the Moon did not have complete control like they do now. The Hawkeye Organization of that era did not have political power either, it was purely a civilian organization, much more innocent than it is now... They executed assassinations of great artists, the wealthy, officials, and nobles, mostly in the name of "justice" based on public sentiment.
In that era lacking street lamps, the Iris Capital with its numerous artistic buildings was overly advantageous for those assassins who could hide in the shadows. They could easily escape, blend into the shadows of the architectural complexes, and then flee from any corner of the capital.
Although many assassins used this tactic to assassinate the Sons of the Moon, many also used this advantageous terrain to assassinate some political celebrities.
Meanwhile, some gang members would also take advantage of this favorable environment for theft, robbery, kidnapping, or murder. The Hawkeye Organization even had to take on part of the patrolling and security work… Yet despite this, some crimes were still pinned on them.
After all, most people's familiarity with the environment surely could not match those assassins who flipped around on rooftops every day. And those who control public opinion and power were all afraid of the Hawkeye Organization's "observation in the dark."
——How many people who have reached this level dare to say that their hands are absolutely clean, they've never offended anyone, and they've never harmed any innocent person?
In the Iris Capital, from any shadow in any corner, arrows could shoot out, and from any high rooftop, an indistinct assassin might leap down for an aerial assassination. And whether or not they managed to kill their target, as long as they immediately vaulted over walls and fled, it was basically impossible to catch up to them.
Even upper-level Transcendents could die in an assassination they were completely unprepared for. Not to mention sniping, curse killing, poison killing... Even if it's just harassment, it would still be incredibly irritating.
Finally, under the influence of the growing fear among the Sons of the Moon, the Iris Royal Family announced spending a huge sum of money to install numerous lamps throughout the capital.
Every street—dark alleys, rooftops, under bridges, dead ends, even within sewers—were filled with countless lamps, ensuring the city remained perpetually bright at night, with increased nighttime patrols to ensure not a single shadow existed in the city. Destroying or obstructing the illumination was listed as a crime.
This indeed greatly reduced the crime rate, as the assassins indeed could no longer assassinate in the open. Previously, they could vanish into the darkness with just a turn, now even after half an hour of running, they remained in bright light. The omnipresent light made stealth much more difficult, and even stealthily moving assassins could be exposed because of it.
The Royal Family was pleased with the striking results, so this costly project remained in place.
This directly resulted in the Iris Capital, where one cannot sleep without drawing the curtains. Conversely, the safety and brightness of the city at night directly promoted the Iris Flower's nocturnal entertainment culture. People began going out at night, setting up stalls, having fun, and shops did not close anymore.
When the night became as bright as day, people's perception of time gradually changed. So, the Iris Capital eventually developed a lifestyle drastically different from other cities.
Until the Royal Family was decapitated, the Irisflower People proudly called it the "City of Light" to commemorate the light of freedom. Yet they forgot the name's original origin.
And the Hawkeye Organization's headquarters is located here—in the brightest part of the capital that cannot accommodate a single shadow.
Even up to now, they have not been discovered by the Sons of the Moon. The reason is simple... because they are hidden underground.
When Iris was still the Helasal Empire, this was the location of the Spirit Summoning Tower Academy. To provide sufficient materials for the Spirit Summoning Tower Academy, and to try to solve the Undead disaster in the absence of a Priest, many corpses from the Imperial Era would be transported here.
To store these corpses, there was a huge underground catacomb. And when the Spirit Summoning Tower flew away, this place was only hastily buried and sealed. After the establishment of the Iris Kingdom, it was not chosen to be filled in... because doing so would be too costly, and no one wanted to pay the price.
Even the Sons of the Moon dared not explore underground—who knows how many undead the corpses buried here might have hatched into, or how many powerful Phantom Demons might have been cultivated. The Path of Love is naturally restrained by the Path of Dusk, just as the Demon of Winter can easily kill a Son of the Moon.
Thus, the assassins of the Hawkeye Organization, surrounded by a group of undead, hide at the end of the catacombs filled with countless corpses. This is also the best place to train stealth skills—once sent to the headquarters, one basically cannot leave.
If you disturb the undead and haven't mastered an adequately powerful stealth capability, there's only one way out: death. And if you can't skillfully escape through obstacles formed by various bones and earthen walls under the pursuit of the undead, there's absolutely no way to leave here.
