When the Heavens Shattered

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Devourer’s Gaze

Li Wei stood frozen, his breath caught in his throat. The Void Devourer loomed in the distance, a monstrous entity of shifting shadows and abyssal hunger. Its countless eyes, scattered across its amorphous body, glowed with an eerie red light, each one locking onto him with an intelligence that sent shivers down his spine.

The pendant at his neck pulsed wildly, reacting to the presence of the eldritch being. The hum in his ears grew deafening, and the voice in his head returned, its tone urgent.

"Do not move. Do not breathe too loudly. It senses willpower. The more you resist, the more it will seek you."

Li Wei clenched his fists. His mind screamed at him to run, but his instincts told him otherwise. He forced himself to remain still, every fiber of his being tensed like a coiled spring. The air felt thick, oppressive, as if reality itself trembled beneath the Devourer's presence.

Then, suddenly—

BOOM.

The crystalline ground beneath him cracked, a deep fissure splitting the earth. From within, writhing tendrils of darkness slithered out, reaching for his ankles. He leapt backward, narrowly avoiding their grasp, but the movement drew the Devourer's full attention.

A guttural growl rumbled across the strange, fractured landscape, and the air around Li Wei thickened into a near-solid force. He fell to his knees, his chest tightening as an overwhelming sense of dread invaded his mind. His limbs felt heavy, his thoughts sluggish.

"It's feeding on your fear." The voice inside him warned. "Fight it, or you will be consumed."

With every ounce of his willpower, Li Wei forced himself to stand. His heart pounded like a war drum, but he refused to let terror take root. He had spent his entire life being the weakest, the one left behind. He would not break now—not here, not like this.

His pendant flared with sudden brilliance, a golden light cutting through the suffocating darkness. The Devourer recoiled slightly, its many eyes narrowing. Li Wei didn't understand what was happening, but he grasped onto the opportunity.

"I don't care what you are!" he shouted, his voice hoarse but resolute. "I will not be devoured!"

The Devourer let out an unearthly roar, its form shifting, becoming a swirling mass of pure shadow. Then it lunged.

Li Wei barely had time to react. A massive claw, wreathed in swirling void energy, sliced through the air. He threw himself to the side, rolling across the crystal ground as the impact shattered the terrain where he once stood.

"Run!" the voice urged.

Without hesitation, Li Wei bolted. His feet pounded against the shifting terrain, his mind racing. Every step sent shockwaves through his legs, but he pushed forward. Behind him, the Devourer moved with terrifying speed, its colossal form consuming everything in its path.

A jagged cliff loomed ahead, the edge disappearing into an endless abyss. There was nowhere left to run.

"Jump."

Li Wei's eyes widened. "What?!"

"Trust me. Jump. NOW!"

With no other choice, he clenched his teeth and leaped into the void.

The sensation of falling overtook him. The wind howled in his ears, and the darkness below swallowed all light. His stomach lurched as gravity pulled him downward at a dizzying speed.

Then—

A blinding flash erupted from his pendant. His body was wrenched sideways, as if unseen hands had grasped him mid-fall. A sharp pull, a sudden shift, and then—

Silence.

Li Wei's eyes fluttered open. He lay sprawled across a bed of grass, the scent of damp earth filling his nostrils. The sky above was no longer fractured; instead, a deep violet hue stretched across the horizon, stars twinkling like distant embers.

He sat up slowly, his body aching all over. His head pounded, but he was alive. More importantly, the oppressive presence of the Devourer was gone.

"You're awake." A familiar voice drew his attention.

He turned his head and saw Yue Ling kneeling beside him. Her robes were tattered, dirt smeared across her face, but her sharp eyes glowed with relief.

"Yue Ling...?" Li Wei's voice was hoarse, disbelief washing over him. "How did—?"

"You vanished when the ground collapsed," she interrupted, offering him a waterskin. "I searched everywhere. You were gone for three days."

Three days?

Li Wei's mind reeled. It had felt like mere moments since he had jumped into the void, yet he had been missing for days. Had time flowed differently in that strange space? Or had he truly been on the verge of death?

"You shouldn't have survived," Yue Ling continued, watching him carefully. "No one comes back from the Ethereal Abyss." She hesitated before adding, "What happened?"

Li Wei hesitated. The pendant, the voice, the Devourer—it was all too much. Would she even believe him?

"I... don't know," he admitted finally. "But something is watching me. Something ancient. And I think it wants me to find something."

Yue Ling studied him for a long moment before exhaling sharply. "Then I hope you're ready, Li Wei. Because whatever you've gotten yourself into... it's only just beginning."

A chill ran down Li Wei's spine. He clenched the pendant in his fist, its warmth grounding him.

He didn't know what lay ahead. But one thing was certain—

He would find out.

And he would survive.
