Chapter 1025: Five In One Place?
Despite the goblin attack, it seemed like everyone recovered from it pretty quickly and we were on the road once again.
Heck, even the guy who got shot by the arrow didn't seem too bothered like this was something that had happened to him before.
The merchant also seemed more annoyed than afraid that we were attacked as well.
I leaned over to Katsuki, "Ka--"
"It seems like there has been an increase in monster activities over the past few years, Mistress," She answered me before I could even ask my question.
"Eh? There's more monsters?"
Katsuki nodded before leaning closer to whisper, "Some believe that Goddess Hiandoca might be planning to plunge the World into chaos with her monsters… But we know it's mostly because of the presence of Off-Worlders."
Right, there was that discussion back then and Hiandoca also said so herself that the mana of the World increased because of our presence so that led to more Dungeons and also more monsters…
The good news is that it seems like there was also quite a boom in the number of Adventurers, Mercenaries and Dungeoneers so it sort of balanced it out, mostly…
But I guess this meant that travelling was also more dangerous now. No wonder this merchant hired two Mercenary parties instead of just one.
We weren't at the border of the Kingdom so it wouldn't even have been weird for a caravan to not hire guards at all since these parts should have soldiers patrolling them as well.
So by all accounts, the goblins attacking us really was a case of bad luck for us.
But it has happened enough times that it's not really that rare of an occurrence anymore and while it may not be to the point that you expect yourself to be attacked, it's not surprising that it happens.
Thus, we were more alert after that attack and I kept everyone on the lookout for any more monsters that might show up.
Luckily, no other monsters showed up and we managed to reach a safe spot to set up camp.
The merchant had some kind of incense that would drive away weaker monsters with the smell but we still need to be on the lookout for stronger monsters and also bandits.
I headed over to discuss the schedule with Clark who was busy setting up his own tent with his companions.
"Clark? Do you want to take first watch or shall my party do it?"
Clark turned to me, "Ah, we're ok with either option so you can choose instead. See that as our thanks for healing us just now."
"In that case, could you take first watch? We'll take over your group until morning since we have more people anyway."
He grinned, "Seems like we'll be quite indebted to you by the end of this request. Please let me express my gratitude once again."
I accepted his thanks before returning to my camp.
"I got us the second watch. They'll take first watch," I announced to the girls.
Emilia groaned, "We're taking second watch? Why are they giving us second watch?"
Well, I'm not surprised that she would be upset since the last watch is the most tiring one since you would be up all night and not able to sleep again until the next time we made camp. That is under normal circumstances of course.
I grinned at her, "You don't need to worry, Emilia. We won't be the ones who will be keeping watch."
With a thought, Eins appeared beside me with a bow and she immediately understood what I had planned.
Obviously, I could just tell Clark that we can take the entire watch for him but that would be suspicious and his party also needs to earn their pay too.
As we made camp, the merchant leader had his people set up a large cooking pot and began to make dinner for the entire camp.
It's nice that even with a job like this, they're taking care of our food needs too~
While waiting, the traveller guy who got shot by the arrow approached me holding something wrapped up in his hands.
"Err… Miss Merc?" He called out, getting my attention.
I tilted my head at him, "Yes?"
"This is just a little something for healing me earlier. I unfortunately don't have much but… This is my thanks for saving me."
Oh, that's nice of him.
I was about to go over but Katsuki beat me to it and appeared in front of him to receive it with a light bow.
"I have received your thanks in place of my Mistress."
She then carried it over to me before stopping a short distance away and I realised she was holding it just in case it was some kind of bomb or something and was waiting for my permission to open it.
I nodded and she unwrapped it, revealing it to be some kind of flatbread.
"It's bread from my hometown, I hope it fits your tastes. I have more of them so if you like it, I can share them with you during the trip," He explained.
Katsuki then got closer and I looked into the cloth bundle to inspect the stack of flatbread that was lightly charred and had some green spices sprinkled on top.
"Thank you, can I try one now?"
"Please be my guest."
I took one and brought it up to my mouth to take a bite.
The bread tore rather easily and the taste of butter and garlic filled my mouth.
Mmm~ This is nice~ It would pair quite well if I had some spicy chicken at the… Wait…
I narrowed my eyes at him and used [Screened], only to see a bunch of errors popping up.
…
Fine then.
I lowered my hand and smiled at him, "This garlic naan is pretty good. You made it yourself?"
His eyes widened and he took a step back.
I didn't say anything and merely stared at him.
He then looked around and I guess he was trying to see if there was anyone else listening in on our conversation before he shuffled forward to whisper, "You're… An Off-Worlder?"
I tilted my head at him, "Off-Worlder? What's that?"
He quickly stepped back but I waved my hand and giggled, "Ehehe~ I'm just kidding. Yes I--"
"You're an Off-Worlder?!"
The three of us turned to see the mage girl that had been in the same wagon as us running up to us.
She must have been using Aeromancy or something to eavesdrop on us because she had been sitting quite far away before we started this conversation.
I guess she also realised that she basically admitted to eavesdropping by doing that so she quickly bowed her head with her hands collapsed in front of her, "Umm… I'm sorry! I… I was curious about your conversation because I… I thought he was an Off-Worlder too! I didn't think that you would also be one! Nice to meet you! I am Jenna! I'm also an Off-Worlder!"
The guy who gave me the bread gestured to himself, "I guess you figured it out but yes… I'm also an Off-Worlder. You can call me Kabir. Nice to meet you."
I stood up and was about to introduce myself when I noticed the father of the couple approaching us as well and I paused.
He stopped beside Kabir and scratched his head, "Umm… Sorry but I guess they're thanking you for saving us back on the wagon right? I also like to thank you on behalf of saving my fami--"
The mage girl interrupted him, "He's also an Off-Worlder… Actually, so is his wife."
The guy spun to look at her with wide eyes and she scratched her head, "Sorry… I overheard the both of you talking just now when I was getting my staff… And your wife was complaining about how there weren't buses so… I kind of figured that out…"
I blinked at her before scratching my cheek, "Wait… That means our wagon is just full of Off-Worlders?"
The three of them turned to look at Katsuki and I quickly waved my hand, "Ah, no, sorry. My companions aren't Off-Worders but they know about our existence. I'm the only Off-Worlder of my party. Ah… Let me restart this."
I straightened myself and curtsied, "I am Aster, leader of the White Dragon's Sword Maidens. As you might have suspected, I am an Off-Worlder. Well met."
The traveller and the mage girl also repeated their introductions for the sake of the new guy before he also gestured to himself.
"I am Christos. A woodworker working in the city we departed from and… Well… My wife over there is Penelope. As Jenna has said… We're both Off-Worlders and we were also both married back in our own world."
Jenna clasped her hand together, "That's so sweet~ What about your children?"
He shook his head, "My wife was barren in our previous life but thankfully this new life did not give her the same problem so we were able to have children here. So both of them are born here."
"Awww~ That's even sweeter!"
"Ah… Thank you."
It really is sweet, but now I'm wondering just what kind of coincidence is this that we have five Off-Worlders who just so happen to be at the same place at the same time?
…
Was that why we were so unlucky to meet those goblins?
