Chapter 578: Pirate Fleet VS Leviathan
If I had a Credit for each time I was involved in a massive space battle involving a Pirate Lord… I would have two Credits.
Which isn't a lot of Credits but you get what I mean.
I watched on my screen as hundreds of ships of different classes and designs all moved forward like a wave to charge towards the Leviathan.
I'm guessing that they either knew the field that messes with the ship's propulsion systems would be nullified upon that Leviathan's death… Or they were just expecting that to be the case.
That's why I didn't order us to charge in at the start as well and lagged behind a little just in case anything happens.
And as if on cue, I noticed the engines of the front most ships sputtering and dying, leaving the ships floating through space at their original velocity.
"Ries, stop the ship!" I ordered, my Maochatte reacting immediately as she switched off the engines and put full power into reverse thrusters.
Several of the other pirates didn't manage to respond in time and ended up also having their propulsion systems affected by the field as their engines shut off, leaving them helplessly flying towards the Leviathans.
The other pirate ships managed to stop themselves just outside of the affected range, leaving their unfortunate comrades floating off into space.
Well… Not like we can do anything to help them anyway…
They're already moving too fast for tractor beams to stop them so I guess those guys just need to wait until they float themselves out of the radius of that Leviathan.
But now we have another problem… How are we supposed to get to the Warp Gate if that Leviathan still has that effect even while it's dead?
My Codex started ringing again and I already knew it was the Pirate Lord calling me even before I answered it.
"What now?" I asked as his screen popped up in front of me.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that? This is your plan isn't it?"
"My plan was to bring the other Leviathan here to have them fight each other and eventually have one of them killed. That's the extent of my plan and I fulfilled it. What comes after is all you."
He made a grumbling sound and another screen popped up at the side, revealing it to be Matsumoto who looked like he was sitting inside a cockpit of a ship.
"Matsumoto. Have you figured out how to use the Exo-Knight?"
The man straightened in his seat, "Yes, my lord. It seems like the lance is a launcher that would shoot out the spear at an incredible velocity. I believe that this is not really meant to 'kill' a Leviathan but to push them outside the system instead."
"What? Didn't the files we found in our base say something about the weapon being designed to 'neutralise' a Leviathan?"
He shook his head, "No, my lord… More specifically, the files were saying that this was a weapon meant to 'neutralise the threat of a Leviathan'."
"Isn't that the exact same-- Ah… I understand now. Fine. It still works, doesn't it? Fire it at that dead Leviathan and send it somewhere else. Then we can focus our firepower on the half dead one."
"Right away, my lord."
I cleared my throat, "Ahem… Do we even need to do that?"
Both men turned to look at me.
"Isn't the snake Leviathan going to eat it right now? Can't we just wait for it to eat that other Leviathan and either the anti-propulsion field will be negated or the snake Leviathan just leaves the system anyway?"
"What about my men that's currently floating off towards empty space right now?"
"It's not like they can't wait, either, right? And if the snake Leviathan attacks them, we can just shoot at it from here, can't we? Or are we still out of range?"
Matsumoto gave me a pointed look, "What's a snake?"
Eh? Wait… Seriously? This guy doesn't… Oh wait… It's actually normal not to know I guess since it's no longer a common animal that can be encountered.
"It's just the longer Leviathan… Don't mind me… I just gave it a name so that it's easier to differentiate," I half lied.
The Pirate Lord's second in command gave me an odd look but chose not to question me about it and answered my other question instead.
"We are out of our effective range right now but… What would we do if that Leviathan also gains the other Leviathan's ability once it consumes it?"
"Then you can just fire your lance at it and send it flying away, right?"
"What if it just warps back here? Assuming that it still has the ability to do so, of course."
"Then we'll just have to shoot at it until it dies, right? Wasn't that what you guys planned to do from the start? Your Exo-Knight will just keep it at a distance with the lance while the rest of the ships around here will just keep firing at it until it's dead. Don't think you need a genius to figure that out?"
The Matsumoto guy turned his gaze towards his side of the screen which should be where his display of the Pirate Lord was and I saw the Pirate Lord respond with a curt nod.
"Let's go with that plan then."
"Mistress… You might want to give the order right now…" Lea's voice suddenly came from the side.
I turned to her to see her pointing at the display in front of me, prompting me to return my gaze to the front.
There, looming right above the entire pirate armada fleet, was the snake Leviathan… Note: Check M_VLEMPY_R for any corrections.
When the heck did it even Warp over here?!
Wait… There's a rather big lump that is currently moving down the length of its body… It has already swallowed up the fish Leviathan I see…
"Ries?"
"Engines are still working, Mistress… Those pirates at the front that had been affected earlier have reignited their engines as well."
That's one mystery solved… Which means…
"Lea! Weapons free!!"
"All members of the Vengeance Fleet!! Fire at will!!" The Pirate Lord also shouted through the comms.
Kinetic railguns, laser cannons, missile launchers and torpedo tubes started firing all at the same time, all of them aimed directly at the giant Leviathan staring down at us.
Explosions wrecked all over the front of the Leviathan, the creature opening its mouth to let out a silent scream as it flinched back from the barrage of attacks.
It was clearly not expecting to face this much fire power as it even retreated back a good distance while still being bombarded by the armada right in front of it.
However, just as I thought that we could just keep this up to push it back, the snake Leviathan recovered and tried to push through the wave of cannon fire as it slowly regained the ground it lost to slither back towards the armada.
Just as it was about to reach us, a single Exo-Knight flew up to reach it, the arm that was holding the lance pulled back in preparation to thrust the weapon at the Leviathan.
The creature raised its head slightly as though to scoff at it before it opened up its mouth as if to prepare to swallow it whole.
Matsumoto thrust out the lance in his Exo-Knight's hand and there was a small explosion at the handle before the entire front part of the lance was launched forward at an incredible speed, the projectile flying straight into the mouth of the snake Leviathan.
To be honest, the size of the lance was pretty much like a toothpick to the Leviathan so I was already doubtful that it could even do any damage to the giant creature…
But when the tip of the lance touched the back of the Leviathan's throat, the body of the lance cracked open and small metallic balls popped out and latched themselves all around the Leviathan's mouth.
Then all at once, all the metallic balls exploded with enough force to push the Leviathan back, sending it flying a good distance away from us where it spun head over tail before it finally regained control over itself.
When it looked back at us, I realised that a good chunk of its head had seemingly melted off, almost like something had eaten away at it or something.
Seems like the Pirate Lord's interpretation of the weapon was correct after all as the lance was fully intended to neutralise the threat of a Leviathan by killing it.
Those metal balls must have contained some kind of explosive that would melt away organic materials or something.
Obviously, we weren't going to let this chance go as everyone opened fire again.
Matsumoto reloaded the lance with another one on his back right as the snake Leviathan charged again.
There was no hesitation in his movement as he fired the lance again, this time impaling the projectile right on top of its head.
The lance exploded with the metal balls once more and blew off the remainder of the Leviathan's face.
Now we have a dead Leviathan just floating away and out into the void of space…
Well, that was stupidly easy?
I think that Exo-Knight could have killed both Leviathans by itself now…
