Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Key Dark Magician Cards! Magicians' Souls and Illusion of Chaos!
By now, the six duel worlds had a preliminary understanding of the Dark Magician archetype. Even the Dark Magician masters, Yugi Muto and Atem, had to look at this familiar yet strange system with a completely new perspective after watching the showcase.
But the short video's content wasn't over. The blogger, "30-Year-Old Dark Magician," was still explaining subsequent Dark Magician-related content and knowledge!
30-Year-Old Dark Magician: "After explaining the strongest board, next up is the analysis of the essential cards in this Dark Magician system."
30-Year-Old Dark Magician: "There's not much to say about the three vanilla Dark Magicians, nor about Magician's Rod, the powerful in-archetype searcher."
30-Year-Old Dark Magician: "The only ones worth mentioning are the following few. First is Magicians' Souls!"
[Card Name: Magicians' Souls (Level 1)]
[Attribute: DARK]
[Type: Spellcaster]
[ATK/DEF: 0/0]
As the information for this Level 1 monster with 0 ATK and DEF appeared, the old-school duelists from the first generation couldn't help but frown. Wait. They actually run such a weak-looking card? But after reading and fully understanding its effects, the old-timers couldn't sit still!
Effect 1: If this card is in your hand: You can send 1 Level 6 or higher Spellcaster monster from your Deck to the GY, then activate one of these effects.
● Special Summon this card.
● Send this card to the GY, then you can Special Summon 1 "Dark Magician" or 1 "Dark Magician Girl" from your GY.
A simple and powerful searching effect! Sending Dark Magician to the Graveyard wasn't a waste of resources at all! It was an indirect way of setting up a Dark Magician summon! What was absurd was that this card could also choose to help Special Summon Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl!
Effect 2: You can send up to 2 Spells/Traps from your hand and/or field to the GY; draw that many cards.
The second effect was a straightforward resource generator! An indirect way to clear your own backrow for fresh cards! After understanding the whole picture, back in the DM world, Yugi and Atem both understood just how valuable this card was to the archetype! After all, for a deck that essentially needed a 3-card combo to get started, having this card in hand was equivalent to having a search or Special Summon for Dark Magician!
30-Year-Old Dark Magician: "Running three copies of Souls is no problem; it's the core of the core."
30-Year-Old Dark Magician: "Next is Illusion of Chaos, a Ritual Monster that can act as a negate or a searcher."
[Card Name: Illusion of Chaos (Level 7)]
[Attribute: DARK]
[Type: Spellcaster]
[ATK/DEF: 2100/2500]
"Effect 1, a simple hand effect: reveal it, search for a Dark Magician from your deck, then place one card from your hand back on top of the deck."
"Effect 2, while on the field, it's a monster effect negate. Afterward, it can return to the hand to Special Summon a Dark Magician from the Graveyard, which can then be combined with Dark Magical Circle for a banish!"
"With just these two effects, this card is also a mandatory 3-of!"
"So it's not hard to see that the synergy between the in-archetype monsters, Spells/Traps, and Dark Magician itself is very strong. Just these two cards, I believe all you duelists watching understand their status, right?"
"...."
Magicians' Souls and Illusion of Chaos. Indeed. The roles of these two cards were incredibly important to the archetype!
DM World
Yugi Muto took a deep breath and seriously contemplated the combos between these two cards and the other Dark Magician cards. The Pharaoh within him had already fully grasped the strategy! Souls and Illusion of Chaos were essentially just support functions for the first-turn board! Trying to use these two cards for damage output was impossible! Or rather, they weren't even qualified! One had 0 ATK and could only serve as a tool for summoning and searching Dark Magician. Illusion of Chaos, with its 2100 ATK, was also not enough to be a threat; its main purpose was to be a recyclable monster negate.
...
GX World
After seeing these two key cards, Jesse Anderson and Bastion Misawa had also calculated the general combo lines for Dark Magician. However, if that was the case, their expressions were not joyful. Because... the power level was insufficient. Compared to HEROes, perhaps Dark Magician really couldn't keep up?
"So, the King of Games Yugi's deck... still has to rely on Spells and Traps, right?" Jaden Yuki said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Like Eternal Soul, or Dark Magical Circle!"
"Probably so," Aster Phoenix shrugged. "Or maybe it relies more on cards from other archetypes? We'll know if we keep watching." From what he remembered, the strength of Dark Magician was its versatility and its creative use of Spells and Traps. The former King of Games, Yugi Muto and Atem, when using the Dark Magician deck, didn't they rely on one word?
"Top-decking!"
Yes, as long as you were good enough at "top-decking," you could bring out the true power of the Dark Magician deck!
