Chapter 78: Chapter 77: The Enthusiastic Magnus, Prophecy!
Magnus the Red, now known as the Lord of Prospero, the Emperor's fifteenth son.
And in the future, after making the most expensive call in the galaxy, this young 'pony' convinced he'd done nothing wrong, would become a Daemon Prince of Chaos. He would transform into the Crimson King, the Sorcerer King, the Cyclops, the Red Daemon.
Right now, Prospero was thriving.
This was an unusually tolerant world, its oldest colonists being none other than psykers rejected by human society.
Because of that, this planet never banned the study of psychic sorcery or Warp research.
When Magnus had first been sent to this world, he had, thanks to his immense psychic power, quickly risen to the planet's highest authority in just a few years, becoming the most powerful sorcerer on Prospero.
And during that time, he'd always kept in touch with the Emperor, enjoying a fatherly love no other Primarch could have experienced, well, aside from a certain Warmaster.
Russ's fleet was ordered to dock at the still-under-construction starport, with all Space Wolves commanded to remain aboard their ships.
Only Russ himself, along with Axis, Kasha, and several Wolf Guard, took a small lander down to the planet.
The shuttle soon landed in Tizca, the capital of Prospero, where a tall young man, around three and a half meters high, staff in hand, his face full of wisdom, waited for their arrival.
As soon as he saw Russ disembark, Magnus greeted him with great enthusiasm, even giving him a big hug.
As the bold Wolf King from Fenris, Russ returned the gesture with equal warmth, hugging his somewhat slender brother so tightly Magnus almost couldn't breathe!
Three years ago, when he'd first met his father, the Emperor had embraced him the same way, letting him feel a long-lost sense of kinship.
"It's good to finally meet you, Brother. I am Leman Russ, the Wolf King, Son of Fenris."
"I am Magnus, King of Prospero, Lord of the Fifteenth Legion! Welcome to my realm, welcome to my planet, brother! You're the first of our siblings to visit me. I can't describe how delighted I am truly delighted at your arrival!" Magnus's joy was obvious, even looking at Russ and Axis as if he were seeing saviors.
Russ couldn't help but find it odd.
Wasn't this newly-met brother of his a bit too enthusiastic?
After greeting Russ, Magnus turned to Axis.
He'd heard the name before. During one of his conversations with the Emperor before the Emperor had come to Prospero, he'd heard mention of a child whose potential rivaled the Primarchs.
"Greetings, King of Prospero, Lord of the Fifteenth Legion, Lord Magnus. I am Axis, son of Leman Russ, and I salute you," Axis said politely.
Kasha, standing beside him, also gave a slight bow, though she didn't speak.
"Haha, It's my please to meet you Axis! Just call me Magnus, there's no need for all those titles. I'm very happy you could come!" Magnus replied warmly.
A month and a half earlier, he had suddenly received a message from the Wolf King Russ, requesting a visit to his planet.
At the time, Magnus didn't really know this brother.
He'd only intended to receive them with a simple welcome and basic hospitality.
After all, since becoming the Lord of the Fifteenth Legion, he'd been far too busy.
Busy building his homeworld, busy assembling his own sons, busy dealing with some tricky problems! There really wasn't much time for anything else.
But then, about a month ago, a psychic prophecy changed his mind.
Magnus had suddenly experienced a vision of the future, a psychic foresight so to speak.
As the most powerful psyker among the Primarchs, second only to the Emperor himself, Magnus's gift of prophecy was incredibly strong.
Even as a child, before his return, he had used psychic foresight to uncover his own origins, to avoid future dangers, and in adulthood, using this unique ability, he had defeated soul-devouring monsters on Prospero, freeing the world and becoming its king.
So Magnus had always trusted his psychic visions implicitly.
This time, the vision told him that this man called Axis would change his fortunes, perhaps even bring him unimaginable benefits in the future.
And after meeting Axis in person, Magnus's foresight became even clearer.
The most important detail was this: If he befriended Axis, there would only be benefits, no downsides at all. It could even help him avoid many disasters that would otherwise befall him.
That was why Magnus was now so enthusiastic in welcoming Russ and his party.
Magnus's passion left Axis feeling a little awkward.
The man really was a bit too enthusiastic.
Who knew what Magnus would think, if he learned, in the future, that the Space Wolves would destroy his world and slaughter his homeland?
But since Axis had transmigrated here, maybe he could prevent this tragedy. If Magnus remained loyal, the traitors wouldn't stand a chance.
Honestly, Axis found it strange that a single psychic call from Magnus could destroy the Webway Nexus.
Why? Even now, with Magnus on Prospero and the Emperor on Holy Terra, they could communicate effortlessly through psychic power.
Even when Magnus had been just a child, he could speak with the Emperor. There was no reason that, a century and a half later, it should be so difficult to send a warning.
There must have been something wrong with the Warp at that time.
The most likely explanation was that all four Chaos Gods had worked together to create a psychic storm and block communications between the Emperor and Magnus.
In short, it was the Ruinous Powers meddling, maybe even piggybacking on Magnus's psychic phone call to blow up the Webway Nexus.
Then they made Magnus the scapegoat, and led him down the path to damnation.
As for the mastermind behind it all, Axis didn't even need to think.
It had to be Tzeentch!
"Come, my brother, and Lord Axis," Magnus said warmly.
"I've prepared a grand banquet for you. Welcome to Prospero, let me show you the hospitality of my world."
With that, Magnus led Russ and the others toward his palace.
Along the way, Magnus cheerfully introduced the customs and culture of Prospero to Russ and Axis.
On this planet, psychic powers were never forbidden. Many even saw psychic abilities as perfectly normal, taking pride in being psykers.
The group entered the palace and received a warm welcome from the King of Prospero.
At the feast, Magnus and Russ sat at the head of the table.
Elegant dancers entered the grand hall, performing graceful dances, while musicians from Prospero played their instruments. One exquisite dish after another was brought out.
"Make yourselves at home, my brother," Magnus said, "I've prepared plenty of food for you. I know how much you both can eat."
"Hahaha! That's true enough! Come, Axis! Let's have another contest!" Russ laughed.
"Sure!" Axis replied, and the two quickly squared off, starting another feast.
An hour later, as expected, Russ once again lost to Axis.
When it came to eating, Saiyans had never feared anyone.
"Hahaha! Incredible. Axis, how do you even fit all that food in your stomach?" Magnus asked with a laugh.
"Who knows? Maybe there's a black hole in there," Axis joked.
"This kid is a monster. Even when he was five or six, I couldn't out-eat him," Russ groaned, leaning back in his chair, unable to straighten up.
He silently swore never to challenge Axis to another eating contest.
There was just no chance of winning, he'd only gotten more voracious since childhood.
"You two have a great father-son relationship," Magnus said, smiling.
Axis chuckled and gave a small bow to both of them before returning to his seat beside Kasha.
The two brothers chatted about many things, especially about the Great Crusade, which Magnus was deeply curious about, since he would soon be joining the campaign himself.
Russ recounted his own experiences in the Crusade over the years, even describing several of their fellow Primarch brothers.
"I hear Father is now heading to Baal. Looks like we'll have another brother returning," Russ remarked.
"That's right! And let me tell you a secret, this new brother is an angel!" Magnus said, grinning.
Magnus had already learned about Sanguinius from the Emperor via psychic conversation. This brother, much like himself, possessed certain psychic gifts.
He could even foresee the future.
If he developed his abilities, even if his psychic powers weren't as strong as Magnus's, he'd still be among the best in the Imperium, at least stronger than that little girl sitting down there!
For some reason, though, none of the Primarch brothers seemed interested in exploring their psychic talents.
They hardly even understood the Warp.
"So, Kasha, how does your psychic power compare to his?" Axis asked, glancing at Kasha beside him.
"How should I put it… it seems…I used to have a pretty narrow view of things," Kasha sighed,
"If my psychic power is a hundred, then this brother's is over ten thousand, maybe even infinitely close to my father's."
Magnus's psychic might was simply unimaginable to her, making her feel as though she was standing before the Emperor himself.
She'd thought her power, while perhaps not quite as strong, would at least be in the same league.
But after meeting Magnus in person, she realized just how vast the gap really was.
The difference was more than a hundredfold, maybe much greater.
However, she did have one advantage Magnus lacked: her psychic power was closer in nature to the Emperor's.
Magnus, on the other hand, had a different aura, almost as if… as if… he were a god from the Warp.
Kasha shook her head, trying to clear the thought.
Damn it, how could she think that? Imperial Truth clearly stated that there were no gods in this world!
Although… her father was as powerful as any god.
Axis nodded in agreement.
Magnus's psychic strength was beyond doubt, he was the only one who could ever hope to take the Emperor's place on the Golden Throne.
Just then, Magnus, who had been talking with Russ, turned and raised his glass to Axis and Kasha.
He'd overheard their entire conversation.
With his psychic might, there were no secrets on the whole planet, not even psychic conversations could escape his notice.
The gesture made Kasha a little uncomfortable.
In front of Magnus, it felt as though she had no secrets at all.
Fortunately, he wouldn't forcibly read her mind, otherwise, her identity as the Emperor's daughter might be exposed.
Axis decided Kasha should avoid using her psychic powers openly on this planet.
If Magnus noticed a psychic signature identical to the Emperor's, who knew what he might discover or suspect?
After the meal, Magnus waved his hand, signaling the musicians and dancers to withdraw from the banquet.
He turned to Leman Russ and said,
"My brother, there is something I need your help with. My Legion, my sons, are… experiencing some trouble, and I need your assistance."
"What's going on?" Russ raised an eyebrow, "Tell me, if there's anything I can do, just say the word," Russ replied.
"My brother, my gene-seed is different from yours. It can only be implanted in psykers, and the stronger the psychic talent, the better the compatibility.
"But the surgery success rate is very low. In three years, I've only managed to transform just over a hundred children. Out of more than a thousand candidates, the Astartes conversion success rate is only one in ten.
"All of them are even ideal candidates, adolescent psykers."
A Thousand Sons! When the Fifteenth Legion had been given to him, it hadn't even numbered a thousand.
Compared to other Astartes Legions, it was almost impossible for his to reach ten thousand.
His gene-seed success rate was shockingly low.
He had nearly resigned himself to it.
Up until now, when he saw new hope.
The cure for his Legion's woes might lie with Russ, or perhaps with Axis.
Hearing this, Russ set down his glass, puzzled.
By rights, the Astartes transformation shouldn't have such a low success rate. The mortality rate was higher in adults, but for adolescents, it should be close to 80%, even 100%.
A one-in-ten survival rate was just absurd.
Russ had an idea of where magnus was getting at, but he asked.
"How can I help you?"
...
I'm quite down rn. Can you guys throw me some powerstoes to cheer me up?!
