Chapter 33
They landed right in front of the clock tower of the town square.
Ryu Won was already there, waiting for Yeon-young and Zhaolin.
Zhaolin straightened her uniform and greeted him. Ryu Won returned Zhaolin’s greeting lightly and moved closer to Yeon-young.
His lips curved into a gentle curve. Zhaolin frowned in disdain at Ryu Won’s smile.
“Senior Ryu Won. You’ve finally been mentally screwed by Jung Jaeho, why are you smiling so much?” “Why are you looking? Do you want to look at Yeon-young? Look away.” “Are you really crazy?” “Ms. Yeon-young, do you think my smile is pretty?”Ryu Won nonchalantly accepted Zhaolin’s harsh words.
It’s one thing for her to say whatever she wants to her seniors, but it’s another thing for Ryu Won not to blink an eye.
She leaves and goes to Veronica’s bar alone. The whole time Ryu Won can’t take his eyes off Yeon-young.
His look reminds her of the conversation with Zhaolin and she can’t bear to look away.
“Ms. Yeon-young, did something happen to you?” “Nothing, I’m just a little tired.” “Should we run away?” “What?” “Just say the word and I’ll take you and run away with you.” “Okay.”Ryu Won said, sounding really disappointed. As soon as Yeon-young said the word
“yes”
, he would run away somewhere.
Yeon-young was suspicious of the strangely quiet city.
Last time, I was surrounded by spirits and asked questions as soon as I arrived at the square, but today I didn’t feel popular at all. It was as if everyone had left town.
“Mr. Ryu Won, isn’t the town too quiet?” “Ah. It’s usual this time of year.”Yeon-young looked at Ryu Won with curious eyes, but he didn’t answer her.
Lost in thought, she followed Ryu Won into the tavern.
“Yeon-young!” “Miss Veronica, how are you?”As soon as she opened the door to the tavern, Veronica greeted her enthusiastically with both arms in the air.
Zhaolin had already taken a seat at the corner of the table.
Yeon-young also waved and exchanged a quick hello.
From between Veronica’s legs emerged the main character of their first task, Marie.
She was taller than the last time they had seen her, and she still had the ectomorphic features of her former life.
The glow that had been lost from her comfortable life in the tavern had almost returned to its original brightness.
Veronica’s tavern was a different place than it had been when she had arrived a few days before.
While it had been a warm, sunny, restaurant-like tavern, it was now decorated like a party.
Colorful balloons hung from the ceiling at regular intervals, with egg-sized light bulbs in between.
“What’s the occasion today?” “It’s the village festival, come sit up front.”Veronica led her to a table, one person at a time, lined up like a bar.
She held out her palm and gestured for Yeon-young to order a drink.
“Hahaha, I’ll have strawberry juice.” “Same.” “A glass of water, please.”Shrugging at the onslaught of orders, Veronica rummaged through the pitcher to see if she could find some ice.
No words were exchanged between them while Veronica searched for ice.
Yeon-young felt the slightest hint of discomfort, but she didn’t know what to say, so she kept her mouth shut.
“What’s with the mood? Did you have a fight?”Veronica asked casually as she brought them their drinks, having read the awkwardness in the air.
“Do you have something to say?” “This is a strange atmosphere, isn’t it? Why is the youngest one getting burned after a good business trip?” “I’m not tortured.”Veronica jerked her head forward suspiciously and questioned Zhaolin.
Zhaolin straightened her back and sat up straight, returning the look.
Veronica broke first, shaking her head and walking away from them.
Veronica ducked her head under the table, sweating profusely, and fumbled for something.
“Anyway, I called you here at the request of the village. There’s a festival coming up, and there’s a lot of food.”Veronica pulled an oak barrel the size of her body from under the table. It was too big for anyone but her to lift.
She lifted the lid and a blue glow came out.
Yeon-young stuck her head out and looked into the oak barrel. It was filled with scrolls.
“What kind of festival is this, and why are there so many requests?” “Oh, you don’t know, do you? Tanato has a festival in honor of Iris once a year. It’s more of a food and drink festival, but would you like to check it out?”Yeon-young reached deep into the oak barrel and rummaged around, pulling out a scroll that looked familiar.
As she untied the red string and slowly unfolded the scroll, the blue light faded and a voice spoke.
[I would like one of the special teams to visit our fruit shop and eat some fruit skewers.]
Yeon-young, who at least expected to be tasked with capturing the fugitive Sly, was caught off guard and held the scroll without unfolding it.
Ryu Won and Zhaolin were not surprised, as they had guessed some of the scroll’s contents.
Veronica wiped the sweat from her neck and smiled.
“Is this a request?” “It’s a commission. I told you it was my day to play and eat.” “Is it okay to write it down like that?” “You can come here on the day of the festival while you’re on guard duty, and then you can take care of the requests one by one.” “Why did you bring me all the way here if it’s not urgent?”Zhaolin grumbled.
Yeon-young narrowed her eyes. She realized that it wasn’t going to be as easy as she thought when she had to look at the expenses and resolve the request.
Veronica, noticing Yeon-young’s reaction, sipped a glass of water with a relaxed expression on her face, the sound of ice crunching in her mouth clearly audible.
“You haven’t forgotten who the ghosts in the village are, have you? The horses are your guards, not the souls you have to protect.”She was right.
Come to think of it, the spirits in the village were retired spirits who had come here for a while to retrieve their memories.
Finding their memories wouldn’t take away their abilities, so maybe they were better off than the newcomer, Yeon-young.
With that conclusion, her mood sank as she remembered her confrontation with Zhaolin.
Veronica was worried about her, her face pure and without malice. Ryu Won’s eyes hadn’t left Yeon-young’s until they reached the tavern.
“The fruit shop is in the main square, so it’s easy to find. There’s nothing difficult.” “When exactly is the festival?” “Tomorrow.” “What? Tomorrow?”Veronica looked at Yeon-young sympathetically, then patted her on the back as she brought out another glass of strawberry juice.
She wanted to say that she didn’t know because no one had told her, but she felt like an idiot so she held back.
Yeon-young took a sip of the strawberry juice. The sweet, refreshing taste went down her throat and washed away her tiredness.
She wondered if this was what it felt like for a game character to drink a health potion.
“So everyone’s busy. They’re not even out on the streets getting ready for the festival.” “Ah, I thought the city was quiet.”Yeon-young remembered that the city had been strangely quiet. As she listened to Veronica, Zhaolin put her empty cup on the table and stood up.
Her hazel eyes reflected irritation.
“I would prefer this to be communicated over the comms. This is a waste of time.” “It’s nice to see your face.” “I’m busy.” “Well, I have delivered the request. Actually, there’s something else I want to talk to you about as head of the guild.”The smile on her face faded as she remembered the celebration. It was the first time she’d seen Veronica’s face so serious, and it made Yeon-young tense.
It seemed to be the same for Zhaolin and Ryu Won. Veronica’s golden eyebrows knitted together.
“There’s a piece of information that recently came into the guild, and although it’s not entirely reliable, it’s something I can’t pass up.” “Just get to the point, please.” “You little bastard. Word from the Alliance. The Slys disappear one by one. Most recently, Division Four. Division Four is missing one, and it’s a wanted soul. So, uh, be careful until we know what’s going on.”Yeon-Young couldn’t keep her mouth shut about such a serious matter.
