Chapter 19: Chapter 20: A step into the Abyss
The void answered my smile.
"We see you."
The voice wasn't sound — it was weight. A presence crashing against reality, vast and endless. The air shivered, and the stars above flickered like dying embers.
Kareth Vos stood rigid beside me, their breathing slow and measured — but their hand was white-knuckled on their sword. Fear radiated off them.
They had every reason to be afraid.
But me? I felt something else entirely.
Excitement.
The watcher in the void loomed before us. It had no face, no shape — just a vast and shifting darkness. But I felt its gaze. Heavy and cold, burning through my skin and deeper still.
It didn't speak. It didn't have to.
The Corrupted Heart Shard in my inventory pulsed faster — beating in time with something far older than life. The whispers rose again, skittering at the edges of my mind.
"You have come far."
I took a step forward. "Not far enough."
"Soon."
The ground cracked beneath me. The monoliths shuddered. Vos flinched — but I stood still.
"I don't care about soon." My voice was steady. "If you're going to test me, do it now."
For a heartbeat, there was silence.
Then the void… laughed.
It was not a sound made for mortal ears. It split the air and bent the light, filling the space with an echoing, endless resonance. And as it did—
The darkness moved.
Figures rose from the monoliths' shadows — half-formed shapes with blades of black and eyes like distant stars. They stepped forward without a sound, circling us with slow, measured grace.
Vos cursed under their breath. "You've killed us both."
I smiled.
"Only if they're lucky."
[Abyssal Wraith — Level 30]
HP: 50,000
Attack: 5,000
Defense: 2,500
Six of them. Maybe more in the shadows. They moved like mist, weapons gleaming with an unnatural edge.
"Stay out of my way," I told Vos.
Their eyes snapped to me. "Are you insane?"
"I'll handle this."
They stared at me for half a second — then the wraiths attacked.
Void Step.
The first wraith's strike cut through empty air. I reappeared behind it, the Hollowblade flashing forward—
Void Rend.
One clean stroke — and the wraith unraveled. No scream, no resistance. Just a silent collapse into nothingness.
The others didn't slow.
Two came from the left. I met them head-on — twisting under one strike, deflecting the other. Their speed was impressive. Their technique was flawless.
It didn't matter.
Sword Entropy.
My blade met theirs — and their weapons began to decay. The air hissed as the edges crumbled into black dust.
I didn't give them time to recover.
Void Piercer.
The thrust distorted space, the Hollowblade extending impossibly fast. One wraith's head snapped back — and then it was gone.
The second tried to retreat. I followed.
Presence of the Abyss crashed outward — and the wraith froze. Fear rooted it in place, too slow to dodge as my next strike carved through its core.
Three down.
The others hesitated.
And then Vos joined the fight.
They moved like lightning — their curved sword a blur of steel and shadow. The wraiths tried to surround them — and two fell before they could adjust.
I raised an eyebrow.
"Not bad," I admitted.
"Shut up and fight!" Vos snapped.
I grinned.
—
The last wraith fell in pieces.
The void was silent again — except for our breathing.
Vos wiped their blade clean, eyes never leaving me. "You…" Their voice was low. "You fight like them."
I met their gaze. "Maybe I'm worse."
The air rippled.
"We see you."
The watcher's voice was closer now — heavy and cold. The monoliths cracked, and the stars above began to fall.
"You are worthy."
The Corrupted Heart Shard burned in my inventory. I felt its pulse — felt the weight of the void's attention settle deeper.
"Take another step."
The air before me twisted.
A shape formed — jagged and black, wrapped in shifting mist. A sword — but not like any I'd ever seen.
[Voidfang — Relic Tier Weapon]
Attack: 5,000
Void Affinity: +50%
Skill: Abyssal Severance (A Rank)
The Hollowblade hummed in my grip — almost reluctant. But when I reached forward and took the Voidfang, the two weapons didn't clash.
They harmonized.
The air around me grew still. The whispers quieted. And I felt it.
Power.
The watcher began to fade.
"We will meet again."
I smiled. "I'm counting on it."
And the world snapped back to reality.
—
We stood once more in the broken cavern. The monolith was gone — shattered into dust. The air still carried a faint hum of something vast and distant.
Vos stared at me — sword still half-raised. "What are you?"
I didn't answer.
I turned toward the tunnel leading deeper into the ruins.
Because the void wasn't done with me yet.
