Chapter 7 – New Beginning
The morning light seeped through the thin curtains, casting soft beams across the room. Sixteen-year-old Leo blinked awake, his gaze settling on Amanda's peaceful form beside him. Her steady breathing filled the quiet room, her face serene in the gentle morning glow. With a faint smile, he quietly slipped out of bed, eager to start the day.
The wooden floor groaned softly beneath his bare feet as he tiptoed to the kitchen. The comforting scent of the countryside morning – a mixture of fresh hay and dew – enveloped him. He began preparing breakfast, stirring a pot of soup. The aroma filled the modest house, enticing Amanda to wake.
Amanda stretched and yawned, her eyes slowly opening. Pulling herself from the warmth of her bed, she wandered towards the kitchen. The sight that greeted her was Leo diligently working over the pot, his brow slightly furrowed in concentration.
"You woke up early today, Leo," she remarked, her voice still thick with sleep as she approached him. She leaned over, curious about what he was cooking.
Leo turned to respond, a proud smile on his face, but Amanda was already standing beside him. One strap of her camisole hung loosely, revealing more than she probably realized. The morning sun framed her delicate form from the background, making her look ethereal, almost like an angel.
"How many times do I have to tell you to dress properly, Amanda?" his cheeks flushing a deep crimson. "I am still a man, you know."
Amanda, ever the tease, laughed softly. She adjusted her camisole, letting one strap fall casually off her shoulder. "You say you're a man, but all I see is the boy," her voice light but affectionate.
Leo's mind raced. He was no longer a child, and every time she did something like that, he was reminded just how complicated his feelings were. She had raised him, protected him, yet here he was, noticing her as more than just a caretaker. It made his head spin.
His face burned redder, and he turned away, muttering under his breath, "Amanda, you fool."
Amanda's laughter echoed softly in the kitchen as she moved to set the table. Leo, still flustered, took a moment to collect himself before carefully spooning the soup into bowls. The clinking of utensils and the warm aroma of the meal filled the room, creating a comforting, homely atmosphere. As they settled down to eat, the shared intimacy of their routine brought a sense of warmth and closeness to their small home.
"Happy sixteenth birthday, Leo!" her voice was filled with joy as she handed him a package wrapped in cloth.
Surprised, Leo unwrapped the gift, revealing a set of clothing. His eyes widened in disbelief as he pulled out a long-sleeved shirt and pants, similar to the attire worn by adventurers he had admired from afar.
Speechless for a moment, he finally managed to whisper, "Thank you," hugging the clothing close. He quickly tried them on, and to his delight, they fit perfectly.
In this world, turning sixteen signified a significant rite of passage. Youngsters were deemed ready to live on their own, often heading to the capital to register as adventurers or take on guild-specific roles. Today marked the beginning of new possibilities for Leo.
"You are now a man, Leo," Amanda said softly, her gaze warm as she leaned against the table, resting her head in her hands. "Take time to think about how you want to continue your life."
He looked at her, the weight of her words settling like a stone in his chest. She had raised him, seen him through every stumble and triumph, and now here he was—no longer a child but still uncertain of what it meant to truly be a man.
Amanda’s smile was soft, filled with pride, but Leo saw the flicker of something else—sadness, perhaps?—in her eyes.
He stood taller, his new adventurer's clothing making him feel both empowered and anxious about the path ahead. Amanda's smile was tender, encouraging him as she always had.
"I already told you I want to be an adventurer like my parents, together with you," Leo said, his voice steady but filled with determination.
Amanda blushed slightly, caught off guard by his earnest declaration. She quickly stood up, trying to hide her flustered expression. "I'll have a bath first," she said, her voice a bit shaky.
Leo nodded absently, still admiring his new clothes. "Okay," he mumbled, clearing the table and heading to the kitchen. As he scrubbed the last dish, a subtle shift in the air made him pause.
Out of nowhere, a faint shimmer caught his eye, and before he could react, a translucent window flickered into existence, hovering at the edge of his vision. His heart skipped a beat. He blinked once, twice, hardly daring to believe what he was seeing. It was impossible, yet there it was—the unmistakable interface of a system he thought only existed in games.
His heart pounded in his chest, his palms suddenly clammy. The familiar yet alien interface before him felt like a bridge between his two lives, a secret that could change everything.
The words 'VIP system activated!' gleamed brightly, pulling him from his routine.
Startled, he dropped the dish, the clatter snapping him back to reality. Amanda, emerging from her bath with her hair damp, noticed his frozen stance. Leo's mind raced, memories of his past life flooding back. In games, VIP systems were powerful tools, often game-changing. But here, in this real world of magic and monsters, what could it mean? The implications were both thrilling and terrifying.
He wondered if this was somehow connected to the magic he'd seen others use. Could this be his own unique ability, disguised as something familiar from his past life?
"You seem lost in thought, Leo," she teased, unaware of the new world opening up before him. But Leo couldn’t focus on her words; his mind was already racing with the possibilities that had just been unlocked.
"I'm done. You can go inside after you're done there," she said, her usual confidence restored.
His eyes widened in excitement, recognizing the familiar sight from countless games he had played in his previous life. He stared at the window, hardly believing what he was seeing.
Leo’s mind raced as he processed the sudden appearance of the VIP system. The familiar interface felt like a lifeline to his past, a bridge between the world he left behind and the one he now called home. What does this mean? he wondered, his thoughts spinning with possibilities.
He knelt down and began picking up the shards, his hands moving automatically as his mind remained fixated on the system's sudden appearance.
Amanda, emerging from her bath, caught the look on Leo’s face and couldn’t resist. "Lost in thought? Or are you just admiring the view?" she teased, tossing her damp hair over her shoulder with a grin. "Careful, Leo, you might get too excited on your birthday."
As he carefully gathered the fragments, a mix of excitement and unease swirled in his chest. This is real, he thought, the weight of the situation settling in. Each shard felt like a piece of his own confusion, the life he once knew clashing with the new reality he was beginning to understand.
After disposing of the pieces, Leo wiped the floor clean, his movements steady despite the whirlwind of thoughts. He barely registered Amanda’s words as she spoke, her voice a distant murmur. He brushed past her, his focus entirely on the new reality unfolding before him.
Amanda watched him go, momentarily puzzled by his lack of reaction to her teasing, before resuming her task of drying her hair.
Inside the bathroom, Leo took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. The implications of the VIP system were staggering. He remembered how VIP systems worked in games, granting special privileges and advantages.
But what did this mean for him now? Was it a gift, a way to honor his parents’ legacy, or a dangerous temptation that could pull him away from the life he had built with Amanda? The possibilities raced through his mind, but with them came a gnawing sense of unease. Power always came with a price.
He splashed water on his face, the coolness helping to ground him. As he bathed, his mind raced with possibilities. More than just for himself, Leo knew this system could be the key to protecting Amanda and fulfilling the legacy of his parents. They had been adventurers and now it was his turn. The thought filled him with both excitement and a heavy sense of duty.
As he scooped the water and poured it over himself, Leo felt the tension in his body start to melt away. The bathroom was filled with the subtle scent of lavender from a bar of soap, its aroma mixing with the steamy air to create a calm, almost meditative atmosphere.
Suddenly, a thought crossed his mind. "Amanda," he called out, trying to speak over the sound of the water, "can I take a break today?"
Amanda's voice floated back through the door, this time with a teasing lilt. "You can take a break, but don't overdo it, Leo. Too much excitement might wear you out in other ways," she said playfully.
He didn't immediately catch her meaning. Then, as he rinsed the soap from his hair, the implication dawned on him. He quickly shouted back, his words almost tripping over themselves, "N-no, Amanda! It's not like that!"
Outside the bathroom, Amanda, now fully dressed in her work clothes, laughed heartily. "Oh, Leo," she said, shaking her head with amusement. "Happy birthday again!"
She smiled warmly, a glint of mischief still in her eyes, and grabbed her toolkit. With a quick goodbye, she headed out of the house, the screen door creaking before gently closing behind her.
After his bath, Leo dressed quickly and went to the table. He needs to explore the VIP system further. As he sat down, he tried to recall the mysterious window, but it had disappeared when he got distracted. He didn't remember tapping any button to close it. That's cool! realizing that the window automatically closed when he wasn't focused on it. But how could he open it again?
He tried various methods to bring the window back. "Open," he commanded, but nothing happened. He raised his palm upwards, hoping it would trigger something, but again, nothing. He squinted his eyes and placed his index fingers on both sides of his head, concentrating hard, but still, the window remained elusive.
Leo crossed his arms, his mind racing. If this system is anything like the games I used to play... he thought, searching for a way to access the interface again. A flash of excitement mixed with a tinge of fear shot through him. What if this power comes with a cost? But the thrill of discovery pushed his doubts aside.
After a few moments, he raised his hand and made a scrolling motion in mid-air, mimicking the gestures he remembered from countless hours spent in front of a screen.
Shing! The transparent window reappeared, shimmering with a soft glow. His breath caught as he saw the words 'Welcome to the VIP System' displayed in neat, glowing text.
Bingo! Leo’s eyes darted across the screen, taking in the details. Beneath the welcome message, a few options began to materialize: VIP Perks, Item Shop, and Exclusive Quests.
His heart raced as he hovered over VIP Perks, curiosity and anticipation mingling in his chest. This could be the key to everything, he thought, tapping the option.
As exciting as this was, a part of Leo couldn't help but worry. In games, great power always came at a price—a catch. What would the cost be here, in this real world where the stakes were so much higher?
The screen shifted, revealing a list of benefits: Daily Rewards, VIP Services, Discount Madness, and more. His eyes widened as he scanned the perks, each one more enticing than the last.
Leo noticed a section in the screen: VIP Level 0. His excitement grew. If there were levels, that meant he could progress, unlock more features. But how? And what would higher levels bring?
