Chapter 10 - The Deadly System
Chapter 10: The Deadly System
Yang Yu was beyond thrilled when the system reappeared.
“System! What the hell happened? I couldn’t reach you for so long!” he asked anxiously.
“The host lacked the proper villainous mindset. I couldn’t be bothered to respond,” the system replied coldly.
“What?! How was my mindset lacking? Ever since I got here, I’ve been racking my brain, focusing on completing my missions. And what does this have to do with my mindset anyway?” Yang Yu protested.
“Have you completed your mission?” the system asked.
“…No…”
“I sent you here to be a villain. Look at yourself—what have you been doing for the past month?”
“I’ve been working on it! Besides, the main plot hasn’t even started yet,” Yang Yu argued.
“For over a month, you’ve been nothing but a backup plan for Ding Dian, throwing money at Meng Yun and Yu Fei, boosting their reputations. That’s it. This system must have been blind to choose you as a host. Do you even understand what ‘villain’ means? You’re supposed to be the antagonist! What do you think you are, the protagonist’s kind old mentor, showering him with benefits?” the system snapped.
Yang Yu was completely speechless.
After a long silence, he shamelessly tried to butter up the system. “This is my first time traveling to another world—I had no experience! But thanks to your wise guidance, I’ve had an epiphany! My admiration for you is like the mighty Yangtze River—endless! Like the flooding Yellow River—uncontrollable!”
He laid it on thick, hoping to ease the system’s wrath.
“Fortunately, the host realized in time that he is a villain. Otherwise, the consequences would have been dire,” the system stated.
Yang Yu’s heart skipped a beat. “What consequences? As long as I complete the mission, I’ll be fine, right?”
The system’s icy voice echoed again.
“As a villain, if you don’t commit any real villainous acts or dare to go head-to-head with the protagonist, even if you complete your mission, I will make sure that in your next transmigration, you die in the first episode. Then, I will select a new host.”
Yang Yu’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What?! That’s a thing? How many hosts have there been before me?”
“You’re the third,” the system responded flatly. “The first two hosts met their demise because they did too many good deeds.”
Yang Yu’s voice trembled. “C-Can you tell me what happened to them?”
“Of course. This system is very transparent,” it replied.
“The first host became best friends with the protagonist. Although he completed the mission, his actions did not align with villainous standards. So, in his second transmigration, his status was slightly downgraded… he became a death row inmate, on the execution ground.”
Yang Yu gulped.
“The second host did pretty much what you’re doing now. So, during his next transmigration, there was a minor deviation… He accidentally landed in a fantasy world, right in the middle of a supreme cultivator’s tribulation.”
Yang Yu wiped the sweat from his forehead. “A-And then?”
“The first one was executed. The second one was instantly reduced to ashes—soul completely annihilated.”
The system’s tone was emotionless.
Cold sweat poured down Yang Yu’s back, soaking his clothes. He felt like he had just been pulled out of a river.
Internally, he raged: ‘A slight downgrade’? ‘A minor deviation’?! Bullshit! This damn system clearly wasn’t satisfied with them and set them up to die! What kind of messed-up system is this?!
“System, almighty system… Can I ask… Can I just go back? Be a shut-in again? Can I not transmigrate?” Yang Yu asked hesitantly.
“As I have stated before, this system is highly humane. If the host wishes to quit, I can immediately return you to your original world and select a new host,” the system said, as if showing mercy.
Yang Yu was overjoyed.
There’s a way out?! Hell yeah!
There’s an old saying—better a live coward than a dead hero. Money and women meant nothing if he ended up dead! Who knows when the system might suddenly turn against him? Without it, he could just go back to his normal, peaceful life. Sure, he wouldn’t have riches or romance, but at least he’d be alive!
But then, the system’s next words shattered his illusion.
“Since the host wants to quit before completing the mission, while this does violate the rules, this system—out of humanitarian consideration—will allow it. However, any errors that occur during transmigration will not be this system’s responsibility.”
“The host has only one chance to quit.”
“Please make your decision quickly. Once made, it cannot be changed.”
The system’s voice was as cold as ever.
Yang Yu was speechless.
Choose? My ass! If I dare quit, this damn system will 100% send me straight to my death!
