Viego in Arknights

Chapter 30: (VIA) Chapter 30: Then Go and Die

"…Your Highness, I hope you will allow me to take a portion of the team to… search for Viego. The other members of the team will be responsible for escorting you back to the ship."

Heavily lowered his head slightly, finally making his request to Theresa. No matter what, Viego was still a member of his mercenary company. Heavily didn't understand why the princess, who was rumored to be gentle and tolerant, would choose to leave Viego behind to cover their retreat. That was undoubtedly sending Viego to his death.

He only knew that he couldn't just stand by and watch this happen. Viego was not just a member of the mercenary company; W and Ines also seemed to think highly of him. It was his own decision to let him join the company and step into this conflict. Otherwise, Viego would not have been involved in the struggle between Babel and the Regent who had usurped Kazdel's throne.

Such a decision was not rational. It might even anger the princess before him. But Heavily still said it, and he made his request without any hesitation or wavering. He was making his position clear. Even if Theresa refused his request, he would absolutely not change his decision.

W and Ines had already been placed on stretchers.

"I'm sorry, Heavily. I cannot let you and your team take this risk."

Unsurprisingly, Theresa refused him in a gentle yet firm voice. But her next words made Heavily look up in astonishment.

She said, "I will take Kal'tsit and go back to support Viego myself. You and your squad are injured, and those two mercenary captains are also heavily wounded. I hope you can take them back to Rhodes Island to receive treatment, okay?"

"What? This… no…" Heavily was so astonished that for a moment, he couldn't quickly organize his words to respond to Theresa. The princess was refusing him, not to abandon Viego, but because she didn't want his squad to suffer any casualties?

The Princess of Kazdel, the leader of Babel, a person of such noble status, was actually willing to put herself in danger, unhesitatingly turning back after having escaped the enemy's pursuit, just for a plain, ordinary… common mercenary?

At this moment, Heavily even felt a little ashamed for the slight suspicion he had harbored towards Theresa earlier. He also finally understood why, even though Theresa had abandoned Kazdel, there were still so many people willing to gather by her side, willing to carry out her will with their lives.

Before Heavily could answer, Theresa had already left with Kal'tsit, disappearing from the mercenaries' sight like a beam of light, in a way they could not catch up to and could hardly understand.

"…Captain, what should we do now?" a mercenary asked.

"…Take Ines and W. We're returning to Rhodes Island." Heavily took a deep breath, gave the order, and led the team to turn back. "Carry out the princess's orders. We have no other choice."

—There were no other choices. For Heavily, if a noble princess was willing to personally go back and risk her life to save someone, what more could he say? He couldn't just abandon W and Ines, letting them be carried on stretchers with such heavy injuries to save someone else. Most of the members of the mercenary company were dead or wounded. The team members following him now were few, and including Heavily himself, everyone was injured. It could only be said that they still retained the ability to fight.

In such a state, it was indeed impossible to split off a second squad from the team to do more. Even Heavily, who had proposed searching for Viego, had initially only planned to go alone to see if he could save him—or to collect his body.

...

On the wilderness to the southeast, the sound of swords sinking into flesh was incessant.

The Black Mist dispersed, and the figure of the white-haired man appeared and disappeared like a ghost, again and again. Each time he appeared, he would take a living soul with the ghostly green longsword in his hand, which was like the scythe of the Grim Reaper.

The Sarkaz mercenary warriors who were pursuing Viego and Theresa's group were completely powerless against him. Whether it was the high-powered Originium Arts of the Casters, the saturated covering fire of a volley of crossbow bolts, or even the bombardment of explosives, nothing seemed to affect the figure's actions of harvesting lives.

—Some people had even begun to feel that they couldn't inflict any substantial damage on Viego at all. Because from the start of the battle until now, besides his clothes being somewhat torn, there wasn't even a single wound to be found on Viego's body!

Fear gradually began to spread in the hearts of the Sarkaz. The faint black mist that permeated the wilderness also seemed to become increasingly eerie and terrifying.

Grouping together? It's meaningless. That would only make the man harvest lives even faster. They could only watch in despair as Viego killed their comrades one by one, watching their comrades die, their skin turning ashen and lifeless, and let the fear in their hearts grow freely.

—And then, their morale unsurprisingly collapsed.

The first mercenary who threw down his weapon and fled the battlefield appeared, and then, like a chain reaction, a second and a third appeared—and even more.

Finally, only a group of Sarkaz clad in heavy, charcoal-gray armor were left, still standing back-to-back on the corpse-strewn battlefield.

...If a battle of nearly a hundred against one could be called a "war."

This group of people was clearly different from the mercenaries who had fled in collapse. They wore standard-issue armor, possessed the same weapons. In their eyes, there was no fear of death, only a calm and a do-or-die determination to fight.

Those who fled the battlefield were mercenaries. Those who stayed behind were soldiers.

Viego no longer hid himself in the Black Mist, but appeared before them openly and honorably. He could feel that this group of people didn't mind talking to him.

"Why don't you run?" Viego asked.

"They can flee, because they are just a motley crew of mercenaries," a Sarkaz responded in a low voice to Viego's question. "We cannot flee, because we are warriors under His Highness."

"His Highness? Which Highness? Surely not Theresa?"

"His Highness Theresis, the King of Kazdel. He is the elder brother of the Princess."

So it's a royal civil war. That explains it.

"Alright, I understand, more or less." Viego nodded, not at all surprised by this answer. "My questions are finished. Do you have anything else to say?"

The Sarkaz soldier met his words with silence.

He raised the ghostly green Blade of the Ruined King in his hand, the tip of the sword pointing at the calm Sarkaz warrior.

"Nothing? In that case, go and die."
