Chapter 157: Chapter 137: I'd Rather Be a Dog of Peace Than a Person in a Troubled World

To prepare for the upcoming civil war within the inner government, the nation of Ashina had turned into a militarized state where every citizen was expected to be a soldier.

Almost all the men had been conscripted into the army. In such a chaotic world, the fate of women, children, and the elderly was nothing short of tragic.

Zhou Sister pushed aside her emotions and continued with her usual strategy—seeking out high vantage points and stealthily assassinating enemy soldiers one by one. As for the Taro Soldiers, she still hesitated to kill them.

However, she soon realized this approach wouldn't work. Every time she assassinated a soldier, Taro Soldiers would discover her. They'd shout for reinforcements, storm in wielding mallets, and besiege her with the other troops.

Under these circumstances, even with her skill, Zhou Sister couldn't survive more than twice.

Over time, she died countless times. Her resolve began to numb, and her original intention—to spare the Taro Soldiers—began to waver.

"Don't hold back, Zhou Sister. Kindness to the enemy is cruelty to yourself."

"Yeah, take them out, Zhou!"

"In a twisted world like this, maybe killing the Taro Soldiers is the only way to free them."

"War is cruel. The old thief's knife cuts deep as always..."

"You don't get it, the old thief is using metaphor."

Many observant viewers in the stream chat had already caught on. These Taro Soldiers were modeled after the child soldiers once trained by warlords in certain African countries.

The warlords would inject the children with neurotoxins, brainwash them, force them to violate their own families, and teach them how to kill—turning them into war machines with no moral compass.

What do you do when you're faced with these well-armed child soldiers?

Show mercy, and they'll shoot you in the head and use your skull as a piss pot.

Show no mercy, and you'll carry the guilt forever.

Now, Zhou Sister faced that very dilemma.

Fortunately, this was just a game. Everything was fictional. The developers had even altered the children's appearances—making them look monstrous and overly muscular—to ease the psychological burden on players.

Because in real life, the truth is much more horrifying than fiction.

Eventually, with her chat's support, Zhou Sister stopped hesitating. She began killing the Taro Soldiers.

Though they were formidable in direct combat, they were still easy targets when assassinated. Their vigilance was lower than Ashina's lowest-ranking soldiers. After all, what child was trained to guard against assassins?

Zhou Sister spent over an hour clearing out the area. Finally, she eliminated all the enemies. Her heart was a mess of emotions—joy, guilt, relief… a blend of everything.

She continued onward, eventually reaching the edge of town, where she saw a huge wooden bridge.

The bridge was over 100 meters long and wide enough to fit four carriages side by side.

But now, it was completely destroyed—impassable.

"Brother, heading to the main city of Weiming? You won't get far this way!" a voice suddenly called out.

She looked around and saw a man sitting near the broken bridge.

He appeared to be in his forties, wore a headscarf, had a pockmarked face, and was incredibly ugly.

"To stop the inner government's advance, Lord Genichiro blew up this bridge to Ashina's capital," he explained.

"Wait, an NPC that talks to me?" Zhou Sister was surprised and walked over quickly.

"Who are you?" the Wolf asked calmly.

"My name is Xueshan. I'm a peddler. The army tried to conscript everyone, but I'm disabled. Couldn't join, so I became a merchant," the man replied.

Zhou Sister noticed that Xueshan's right leg was missing below the knee, replaced by a wooden peg.

"Do you know what happened to the elderly and children in this town?" the Wolf asked—voicing what everyone had been wondering.

Xueshan's face fell. Then he sneered bitterly. "In times like these, what good are those who can't fight? Of course, they had to be... put to use. Couldn't let them drag the soldiers down…"

"Lord Isshin is gravely ill and no longer governs. Lord Genichiro's focused on protecting the land—he doesn't have time for sympathy."

He stopped, then smiled thinly. "Brother, best not to dwell on such things. No point in depressing yourself."

"Another cryptic NPC," Zhou Sister muttered. But this exchange confirmed her worst suspicions—Reina's civilians had likely met a tragic fate.

"By the way, want to buy something? Got some quality wares," Xueshan offered, and a shop interface opened up.

Zhou Sister browsed the items: healing pellets, pottery shards, and one thing that caught her eye—firecrackers.

The item description read:

Firecrackers that can be loaded into Ninja tools. Create loud explosions to scare enemies—especially effective against beasts.

"It's a ninja tool!" Zhou Sister realized and immediately bought it.

"Thanks for your purchase!" Xueshan beamed. "By the way, if you still want to reach Weiming's capital, there's another way. Judging from your skills, I'd say you can probably scale the cliff."

He pointed to a nearby cliff. Zhou Sister looked and saw massive rock outcroppings that looked just scalable enough.

"But be careful," Xueshan added darkly. "There's a god in that ravine."

"A god?"

"Yes. The White Snake God. Among all the deities in Weiming, the White Snake is the most powerful. Be cautious."

"Got it," the Wolf replied coolly.

"This really is a fantasy world—gods now?"

"Children are being turned into soldiers. Nothing's off limits anymore."

"Wait… so that means... the gods are real too?"

The chat erupted with reactions.

Zhou Sister didn't reply. She returned to the temple via the nearest sculptor idol and equipped the firecrackers on her Ninja tool.

"Let's try it out!" she said, switching from the shuriken to the firecrackers. With a flick, a burst of light and sound exploded around her—crackling violently.

"Whoa, that's scary!" Even she was startled.

Once geared up, she returned to the broken bridge and followed Xueshan's directions.

The path ahead led along the cliff, where huge protruding rocks provided a precarious route forward.

Boom!

Suddenly, the ground trembled beneath her feet. Zhou Sister nearly fell, and debris tumbled into the endless abyss below.

"Was that an earthquake?" She backed up and steadied herself.

The tremors subsided, and she pressed on—but the quakes grew stronger and more frequent.

"What the hell? It's getting worse!"

"It's gotta be the White Snake God."

"Yeah, Zhou, be careful. That thing sounds brutal."

Zhou Sister grew more serious. She soon spotted a crooked tree on the opposite cliff wall—perfect for using the grappling hook.

"Yes! I can make it!" Just as she prepared to grapple across—

BOOM!

A thunderous explosion erupted from the stone wall ahead, and a massive, monstrous head lunged out!

It was the size of two semi-trucks combined, flat and scaled. White hairs even sprouted from its head—it had lived a long time.

"Aaahhh!"

"WTF!"

"Zhou! Hide! Now!!"

Shocked viewers spammed the chat. Zhou Sister reacted fast—pressing against the cliff to stay hidden.

She listened as the cliffside rumbled, the enormous serpent's body slithering along the wall—heading right toward her.

Then, the White Snake God's massive head loomed near her hiding spot, flicking its tongue and sniffing the air.

Zhou Sister held her breath. She didn't move a muscle. Goosebumps spread across her skin. She could even smell the beast's foul odor.

For a moment, she was back in "Deep Sea Trek," reliving her first encounter with Leviathan, the god of death.

But this White Snake… might be even bigger than Leviathan.

"Please go away… please go away…" she whispered to herself, trembling.
